Looks like AMD and its graphics division ATI have a couple of new bits to announce today. First up: the
Phenom X2 and X4 CPUs, AMD's latest dual and quad-core chips destined for their new FASN8 (get it?) enthusiast platform, which also features DDR2 SDRAM, HyperTransport, 128-bit FPUs, shared L3 cache, and the Socket AM2 and AM2+ interface with Dual Socket Direct Connect. We're not done yet, though, since the other half of the FASN8 platform is ATI's Radeon HD 2000 series graphics adapters, including the new
R600, erm,
Radeon HD 2900 XT ($400), 65nm DirectX 10 devices with Avivo Blu-ray and HD DVD acceleration. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for other versions, like the HD 2600, HD 2400, Mobility Radeon HD 2300, and the like. Watch out, we're sure to be flooded with new machines and accompanying benchmarks in short order.

Bring on the benchmarks- time to see if AMD/ATI takes back the crown.

It wont take the performance crown but hopefully it will provide most bang for buck.

These benchmarks will change as new drivers come out (on both sides). I wouldn't try to rank HD 2900 XT vs. 8800-series cards until at least a month from now.
Unless, of course, I was going to buy a card in the next 30 days, in which case it would have to be NVidia.

Well, no reason to even consider the 2900 XT unless you got cash to throw away and a huge underutilized power supply already.
Drivers may help but not enough. Too little too late. Or is it too much (heat, power, size) too late?
Hopefully their next gen product will blow away the competition and have more reasonable power demands.
And maybe the 2400/2600 will end up being the best of the value segment, but that's also to be seen.

Driver support looks to be lagging as vrzone got a minor updated version of the drivers and saw around a 6 or 7 percent increase in performance and since then there has been another driver release I believe. Let's hope they get these things up to speed and soon, for their sake and competition.

Also, ATI has their flagship 2900xtx coming out hopefully in a month or two which looks to be much more powerful the than 2900xt. I wish them well so prices can come down some.

Post is a bit misleading in its phrasing.... HD 2900 XT is 80nm , not 65nm (hence the rediculous 200W+ power draw). HD 2600 and 2300 are 65nm but not available at retail yet.

it's hard to take a performance crown when none of your company's drivers function effectively in the next generation's systems. I still can't buy any product today from ATI that functions flawlessly in windows vista, or even xp for that matter.

This is all fine and dandy, but where are those new 65nm Turions I've been holding out on getting my new laptop for?

FINALLY SOMETHING TO TROUNCE INTEL'S CORE2 SERIES. MAY THE BATTLE CONTINUE AND THE END-USER PROSPER!
