The Motorola RAZR 2
Motorola has today officially unveiled the successor to one of the most iconic mobiles ever made, the RAZR 2. Available in 3.6Mbps HSDPA, EV-DO, and GSM / EDGE variants as the V9, V9m, and V8 respectively, the GSM and CDMA versions of the device comes in 2 millimeters slimmer than its predecessor and -- on some versions, anyway -- will be the second to use Motorola's new Linux-based platform (the first being the Z6). It includes something Moto is calling "Crystal Talk" technology that automatically adjusts volume and tone based on ambient noise. Other features include external music controls, haptics (read: vibration) for tactile feedback when external touchscreen keys are pressed, a full HTML browser, 2 megapixel cam, the full suite of Bluetooth profiles, Windows Media Player sync, a 2-inch QVGA external display, 2.2-inch QVGA internal display, and twice the screen resolution of the original RAZR. GSM versions start shipping in early July, with CDMA following up later in the summer.

This is a nice phone.I like this phone over the PDA phones (Black Barry ect.)bcz I can load Oxford dictionary, Unit converter, Cruncy converter, Globe time, Stop watch and Mortgage calculater in it. All these features are working great for myself.I tried these features in Razr V3i all working good but cann't load in old(regular)Razr. Any one want to talk to me E-mail me raj_1994@hotmail.com
HOT!!!! im about to get this fone... my friends has it and its the nicest one ive seen in a while
When I first got this phone it was real exciting! I loved the slim design and the lusterity and it seemed like it had some really good features, but now I can look at it and say it looks impressive but it really just doesn't do a whole lot for me for the price of the phone. And when I tell people how much it cost and they ask me "really? and what does this phone do that your last phone didn't?" it really gets me thinking!
is it true that it doesnt vibrate ?
Wow its been a long time since I wanted a new Moto but this thing is looking very very sweet... Hope I can afford it!
I never really liked the RAZR before, but these are actually some decent upgrades. I've got myself hooked on using a smartphone so it's still not for me, but not bad.
I like that "crystal talk" feature.
its got the same features as the moto razr maxx ve that i have now but mine looks better and was cheaper
Urgh. Still as fugly as the first one :(
Why do people call this phone ugly? What more do you want, it's so small there is little way of changing it without affecting functionality. I mean what does a "pretty" phone even look like?
What? The RAZR is fugly?
Well, over 50 million people disagree... apparently.
http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2006/07/18/motorola-razr-sales
And that data is almost a year old.
You want fashion? The "pink" one wasn't good enough for you?
Afraid it might clash with your new shoes?
It's a PHONE! not a new purse.
I have never picked a phone for it's "looks".
I'm more concerned with making a call and having good coverage.
lol, i think my pink razr is beautiful, but i must admit the razr 2 is looking kinda ugly.
HOT! If Apple can't ship iPhone orders in a timely fashion this will be a great substitute.

I'm curious about something, they touted the music playing ability of this phone but I don't see a headphone jack. Does it have one, or is it purely through A2DP?
Because the whole benefit of super-slim phone is kinda lost if you have to lug around battery-and-bluetooth-equipped headphones (as opposed to a small set of earbuds)with you.
yes it does come with headphones, the sound quality if very good too!
Why would you need a headphone jack when you can stream stereo audio wirelessly over bluetooth with this device?
Obviously, they will have a hard time fighting the iPhone, especially if it's fighting for the best looks. But, I think if Motorola plays their cards right, they won't be swept under the carpet immediately. Price, for one, will be a key issue here. If they can price this at $150-$200(with contract) I think that that will give them an excellent chance.

meh-torola strikes ag'in.
meh-torola.
No no you're pronouncing it wrong.Its MO-torola.Mo!Not Meh-torola!
And none of these features will be available with Verizon Wireless.
Verizon will cripple this one too. That is why I went to Alltel to use the features of the phone. I am finished with Verizon.
Actually, Ed Zander (Motorola's CEO) mentioned at the announcement that they have sold over 98 million RAZRs, and are expecting to hit 100 million by the end of the quarter

what a difference a year makes...
Hopefully this new Linux based OS is better than the current Motorola phone OS, because let's be honest people, the Motorola phone OS blows.
I think its alright...had a v360 now for over a year and never had any probs.
Agreed the OS really blows. I just got the KRAZR
after my son sank my RAZR. When I push the contacts
button, there is a 4 SECOND delay before my contacts
pop. (and I only have about 50 loaded) This delay
is long enough to cause me to think the phone didn't
register the input...push another button...OOPS.
This delay is persistent in many areas and menus.
I'm trading in this POS.
One thing that the motorolla has though is loyalty and everyone sure loves the razar style. They should do just fine when this one releases vs the I-Phone.
I liked the style when I saw it advertised even when i held it in my hand. But I will never get another one. To be honest it is not even motorola's fault (mostly the slow load times sux) its how disabled the final product is. It took hours of hacking and downloading various programs before it was half as good as the un messed with version.
I don't think this phone will be in competition with the iPhone. At all.
They are targeting two pretty different groups.
Uh, this big beautiful external display...
I like the look of this thing. The outside LCD looks great also.
FYI this it not the Moto phone that is to compete with the iPhone. they are working on one but you will not find any info on it anywhere. they have it under lock and key at this point. When it does get leaked you will see one sweet phone tho.
If it's under lock and key, how did you find out?
The RAZR series never had a headphone jack, they use mini USB to 2.5mm or 3.5mm adapters.
Also, too bad the CDMA version likely won't have any of the nice features like the browser and Linux OS.. we all know that kind of stuff is too nice for a Verizon phone.
Think Sprint, yo.
There's a few tech specs I'm new to in this article. Do any of them mean wi-fi? Because without that ability, it's nothing like the iPhone. I get free wi-fi in my apartment building which means means free web surfing with any wi-fi device. If this doesn't have that feature, it's just an added expense I don't need.
I love that fact that the platform is now Linux based :)
the GSM and CDMA versions of the device comes in 2 millimeters slimmer than its predecessor and -- on some versions, anyway -- will be the second to use Motorola's new Linux-based platform (the first being the Z6).
Will the GSM version make use of the new OS?
good looking phone, but moto quality is suspect. i'd rather hold out for an iphone, or maybe a helio...
I love my RAZR. My only complaint right now is the lack of RTSP video. I really hope this one supports that because all the other features sound great! It also better have the standard USB port as well!
It comes with a converter from the old USB style to the new.
Extended family member works for Moto.
An extended family member works for Moto
Price?
I hope Verizon doesn't cut the features this phone too.

What the hell is going on with the comments here? Anyway--nice looking phone and packed full of features. I too prefer smartphones because of the qwerty but you can't ignore that this does it's fair share.
I disagree though--this is as much about style as it is substance and that alone puts it up against the iphone. Trendy people will have a tough choice in coming months. Throw in the Wing , Curve and q9 and you'll have quite a bit of a free for all. Which I don't mind....
Makes me wonder though--when is the Blackjack 2 coming out?
Very nice, any word on when this will be available in Australia?
I would really like to get it, I've been on the lookout for something matching this description.
Aww... I've always associated the RAZR with "ultra slim", but the iphone is still slimmer! No word on improved battery life either...I'm lucky to get more than a day of standby out of mine...
It's just a phone folks! My Razor lasted exactly one unlucky drop. Did nothing particuraly well. $179 to replace under plan. Meh. I love my $19 cingular go phone which works with my sim card and will let me talk for 12 hours with one charge. It does nothing else, but it does what it's supposed to quite well. if it breaks, i buy another one.
The RAZR is a piece of garbage. Even the guys who work at the store and get them for free don't use them. If this one is up to par with all the other phones on the market, it will be a huge improvement.
Yeah the RAZR was cool when it first came out which was like.. what.. 10 years ago?
I like the features on this phone but the looks are severely disappointing. Mo-no-new-ideas-torola.
Samsung's Ultra series looks a lot better than the RAZR / RAZR 2. Or that new flat Sony Walkman phone. The RAZR 2 looks tired next to those. Just talking about looks, not features [where the ultras are lacking]
I agree that this doesn't compete with the iPhone - different category of phone.
Does anyone else really want to receive a text message from Dickon Isaacs?
The inside display could be bigger. They are wasting a lot of space there to save money I suppose. Other than that it looks good.
but.. hasnt this phone been out since last year? well, speaking from someone who lives in the south-east asian parts.
Pandora E;
regards.
Not bad. I think the phone looks a tad better; the larger screen and slimmer size give it more of a balanced look.
When Verizon gets the CDMA version, their standard to-do list will probably apply:
1. Cut out any useful bluetooth profiles
2. Put in the old, horribly red Verizon UI
3. Completely change button integration so it only works with V-Cast music, Get It Now, and the like.
Ok, so I exaggerate a little. Still, Veizon's track record is pretty bad. Verizon, are you listening? I know most people don't care, but the people who do, like me, seriously consider other carriers when you do these things.
Sorry for the rant.
I think the RAZR2 is more of a mass market phone for 80% of the people out there where as the iphone is considerably bigger, does not work well in a single hand (need two hands for gesture control), too big to fit in a pocket. Two very different products for two different kind of requirements..
DO you have dealer (Motorola Dealer) in Ethiopia, east africa.
Amen @ Josh. My two years wih Verizon is very nearly up, and I'm seriously considering switching to Cingular, just because I want to be able to use the bluetooth OBEX features that were meant to be on my phone.
So, again: are you listening, Verizon?
Honestly, your phone offerings aren't impressive enough that you should really gamble by crippling them. If you get this RAZR 2 in the next three weeks, we'll talk, but - like josh said - we may be a minority among your customers, but please believe we're pissed.
Oh, and one more thing: This RAZR 2 better not cost me more than $200 (including my new-every-two discount, meaning w/o contract $300 would be tolerable). But the "RAZR Maxx Ve" is currently selling on Verizon's site for $199 w/ 2-yr contract and online discount. That does not bode well. If Verizon cripple's this phone's bluetooth and wants to charge some $500 for this thing, it may be time to pay Cingular a visit.
Think Sprint then if you want coverage, features and data speed.
Do Motorola have any Dealer in Ethiopia, east africa? If so can anybody give it's address.
Thanx.
Solman
Warhorse, how do you spell Motorola wrong when it is written ALL over this page?
The only things that motorola didnt change in the new RAZR are the name and the slim design, how can people say it's the same as old razr??????? Looks at the facts.
1- New linux OS and GUI, and the new GUI is full of new options and much better in terms of organization.
2- The phone does not look like the old razr, people only say that because of the name, it's beautiful, i love the design, big keyboard (I hate small keyboards were you just can't type anything fast) Huge external display with multimedia functions, it's just great.
3- HSDPA version, this babe should browse up to 3.6mbps, WOW! Imagine downloading music or videos...
4- Internal memory of 512mb, i just say great.
5- This is a phone you can actually use with only 1 hand (unlike iphone) i think that might be good if you're carrying a bag from the supermarket, or driving a bike, or watching tv and holding a remote and receiving a call, or another 1 million things, damm, how the hell can people say iphone should be good to use if you need 2 hands on it?!?!?
I don't really understand why can people say bad things about this phone, it looks great and i want one, i guess they are tired of the old razr, and just can't let it go, but this is a new phone in all ways, so just wait for it and let go the old razr, this phone should be called another name for sure.
Ummm...is it just me or does this look exactly like the LG 8600, even with the keypad with nothing between the digits?
my biggest criticism with the original RAZR was that fugly lip on the bottom. this RAZR 2 is gonna be my favorite moto ever. and it's definitely not gonna compete with iPhone, it's more set up to the same audience as the samsung glint, UpStage, all of the old motorola fashion phones, etc. V9m and the smamsung UpStage are gonna corner the thin phone market hands down, and yes, this is set (except on VZ) to use the new OS that makes it actually fun and easy to use a motorola phone.
Nice revisions, but it needs a better name that the RAZR 2. What about the DBL EDGE, pun intended, or the Hollywood RAZR, since it shaved a few mm off with some plastic surgery?
I think the phone looke great and no it will not compete with the iphone they are 2 different animals. The real deal here is not the new tech or the design (we all know that everybody loved the razr design when it first came out) in the phone, rather it will all be about the service provider. Will Verizon cripple the razr2? will all that the phone can do be available with any Carrier, either with a plan or unlocked? The other issue will be HOW MUCH DOES IT COST!! Motorola in my opinion makes 2 big mistakes 1. they don't release enough cool phones in the U.S. market right away and 2. Thier phones can be pricey ( although this could be more of a service provider issue that a motorola issue). That being said I want to trade in my old razr for this one. I dont know why people say it should have a different name, Hey when you buy car, the model name doesn't change with every new version. But the features do. Wake people the RAZR has reached iconic statis (it is all about branding)
Beautiful. I am getting one as soon as they come out. I like the fact that it's much faster than all previous versions of the Razr. Hopefully it will have a louder earpiece too. The two main drawbacks of older Razrs.
This forum is a little weirder than most. Several Moto-haters. Almost everybody I know has a RAZR so I can't take comments about them being trash or ugly seriously. Looks like Moto addressed the cheesy construction problem. I totally can't understand why some are comparing it to I-Phone. Not even close in any way. I-Phone is a small-market segment toy like all Mac products which, like all Apple products, is being horrendously mal-marketed by limiting distrbution to one carrier who it seems everyone loves to hate. The new Moto phone will be the biggest selling phone in history (period)
I was going to get the iphone but this looks like it will be better!
If shear number of units sold is any indication of beauty, then the nokia 1100 is the most prized phone in the world at 200 million units. http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/07/nokias-1100-handset-over-200-million-served/
...and twice the screen resolution of the original RAZR...?!....
Why all that hype, bla-bla... why Not plain simple info?!
Info Please!!! ... I begging you!!!
When will it be released in Canada and with whom?
When will it be released in Canada and with whom?
Well, I always liked the way the RAZR looked But I had a very big drawback....you can't hear out of them very well. I mean the volume would be all of the way up and you still couldn't hear out of it. A nice looking phone is great and all But I'd rather have a phone that wasn't as attractive as the RAZR that you can hear out of.
this phone is hot as hell, but i hate how verizon is going to receive it and kill by addibg thier software. i currently have a phone with verizon and its great signal wise, but the software sucks. im also considering to switch in order to exprience this true potential!
I think the RAZR2 looks awesome it will be cool to see the reviews once it finally is released.
I only became aware of the RAZR2 a couple of days ago. I found it by accident when researching the MOTODRZR on the Motorola website. Some of the phone features really intrigue me, the fact that it will be able to read text messages. My complaint is that phone manufactures are designing enough phones to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Most phone now have TTY capabilities and are hearing aid compatible, but what about others with visual impairments and manual dexterity disabilities. We need phones that have better voice recognition and text reading abilities. I think Motorola may be making a move in the right direction with the new RAZR2. I am visually impaired and have needed a new phone for some time. At present the only option Venison offers is the LG EnV. The problem with the EnV, it is not easily navigable by tactile feel and the qwerty is not marked well for typing. I was unaware that Verizon has a history of playing around with Bluetooth abilities. If the RAZR2 is marketed the way I first saw it at Motorola and the price in comparable to the MOTORAZR maxx Ve, then I think it may be a viable option instead of the LG EnV.
I have always been a palm fan myself, even before the smartphones really hit, but once i saw this i nearly switched my entire train of thought, if it weren't for the touchscreen, i'd switch over from a treo to this pretty quick, my one question is how well do the inner buttons work? i know it has the whole haptics (for those of you not in "the know" it sends a quick vibe to ensure you it recognized your finger hitting the touch sensitive music control buttons) thing on the front touch sensitives, but i can't help but feel disappointed every time i touched a button on a RAZR, there was no travel and no feedback, it drove me crazy. and this was officially supposed to be released july 07 right? i haven't seen anything on a release date in sight...
with this phome have GPS capabilities???
I don't want to get lost.
WHEN RELEASE RAZR2?
I have a Razor, and I think it sucks....very disappointed with it...
Great! Verizon (we cripple our phones) is the exclusive provider. NO THANKS!
It's just another fad thing. I would have to get SPRINT (LOL) to get it. NEVER
I'm shocked at the Collective Yawn that is greeting this product introduction. Icnoic, most successful phone model in history, and a sort-of make-or-break launch for Motorola, and all we get is lots of product specs and a hoity-toity web site that has lots of flipping images and spooky music? There's so much they could be doing to make this intro relevant to consumers, and I've pondered that point a bit at DIM BULB, http://dimbulb.typepad.com, if you want to check it out.
RAZR 2 with Linux OS is not going to Verizon - Linux OS is not yet available on CDMA platform from Motorola.

Arrrh ... Sorry about the two posts above. If I could delete 'em I would.
What I meant to say was I've got a little video review workin' of the v9m RAZR2 for sprint, if anyone's interested. I won't post the link again.
anybody knows the price for this phone? INR
i wud love to get one like this after my SLVR
Is it just me, or does this look very similar to the LG8600, Chocolate flip phone?
Nothing too exciting.. hopefully the durabililty is better than the first Razr's.
well what can i say well people who think it ugly probs cant afford it but in that case dnt fukin mock it untill u have tryed it i have one myslef and i love it its got so much memory its also very smooth its like feeling silk i mean i really love this phone and i will always love this phone
anyone know when this is coming to canada and with who?
The razr is fugly?
Am afraid i will have to disagree with you there...
the razr 2 is mobile brillance and one of the best flip phone ever.
where can i order mine?
How do I get to turn off the sound to my razr 2 phone when I open and close it???
Honestly, I'm more concerned with looks on a phone than anything..
I feel a little cheated though, that the RAZR 2 is getting so much coverage, while the KRZR hardly got a thing... I though I was special. I guess the more things change the more they stay the same... Sigh.
The Razr 2 is a big improvement over the already successful Razr. The Razr is extremely popular, especially among younger folks, and I think that the Razr 2 will also be popular with that genre if not more so than the original. As to quality and durability, all my friends have a Razr and when they break one guess what they get again... another Razr. The phone is just too popular and good looking to worry about dropping it. Just be careful that's all and you will have no problem.
awww... I was gonna get this. But, well, most of the comments sound very very negative. I'm confused now. What should I get?? I mean... I don't want the iPhone - it is the first generation. It's going to suck soooo bad. It's going to just get better, so, I'll wait.. For like next 2 years... :)) Well, I don't like the iPhone... It's touch screen and would be very difficult to use, for me, anyways. Oh and it's still not out here yet.
So, which phone should I get? This phone seems to be the latest one that came out. AND the most popular one - second to the iPhone. Does this really suck? Oh god, i'm confused. I also like the Smartphone Moto sells. But, it's too lame now. It came out like, last year...
