USB Mini Fridge keeps the dorks cool
We know you've been waiting for it. Now finally, Brando brings you the $33 USB Mini Fridge. Sure, it takes 5 minutes to bring the fridge down to 8.5 degrees centigrade (47 degrees fahrenheit) and it holds just one can. But hey, it's a 5V USB-powered refrigerator dambit and that's worth it at any price.

Now if your a true geek, you'll stick the radiator with a fan inside this thing to improve your overclocking on a liquid cooling system. I was thinking of doing this with one of those mini coolers, but the size kept me from doing it. This little guy, along with the small size and slim price, really fits the bill. That, along with it's low power requirements, will definitely work for the cheap ass moder.

Let's see that technology put into the back of a ventilator/fan. I'd love to have some icy-cold air blowing around the desk in the heat of summer.
John B @ May 21st 2007 9:07AM
"Keeps the dorks cool" nothing! I have the USB cooling "plate" (or whatever you want to call it) and it does a good job at keeping sodas cool. If that door helps to keep the whole environment around the can cool, that's even better! A geeky toy is cool - no pun intended. Geeky *and* functional, that's even better!
James @ Oct 31st 2008 4:26PM
Unfortunately it creates as much heat as it does cold with a net temperature of zero. lol
shmengie @ May 21st 2007 9:51AM
i hate dorks. us nerds should kick all the dorks' asses!

Tony C @ May 21st 2007 10:25AM
I doubt it's very loud... The cooling is provided by a solid state Peltier plate and the fan looks like a low profile squirrel cage blower.
Air vents could stand to be a bit bigger for better airflow, but that's nothing a little friendly X-acto knife or Dremel action wouldn't solve. ;)
John B @ May 21st 2007 10:51AM
Here is the "open air" version that I referred to in my first post (before that silliness began).
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/7f5a/
It is unbelievably quiet. The only ways to tell easily if it's running or not is to look at the fan in the back or to feel the plate itself. I can't imagine why this enclosed version would be any different.
As to air flow, the fan runs at a relatively slow speed, so I'd be surprised if it needs more ventilation than what it already haas.
geeky @ May 21st 2007 10:46AM
Tony C is very likely correct. I have a "chiller" based off the same Peltier technology with a heatsink+fan attached to it (just like what looks like is at the bottom of the MiniFridge here).
http://www.coolworksinc.com/iceprobe_aquarium_chiller.htm
It works incredibly well (for small tanks) and is almost silent. The noise levels will only be determined by the fan (which could be swapped out if needed) as the thermoelectrics make no noise.
I'd be tempted to pick one up if Fry's carries it.
Jeremy M @ May 21st 2007 10:58AM
They completely missed the mark on the geek market. In the US, most geeks drink a 20 oz bottle, not a 12 oz can. Most geeks will have to alter their beverage purchase to make this work.
Pete @ May 21st 2007 1:54PM
I don't know what you have been drinking, but most true geeks still drink 12oz cans of Jolt Cola that they buy 2 dozen cases at a time of.
Or beer... especially if it's free.

Tertioptus @ May 21st 2007 12:10PM
I saw one for 25 bucks. Not sure of the dimensions though.
$25 + $33 = stand alone refrigeration unit
Though keep the usb for temp. monitors and energeon cube trafficking.
Tertioptus @ May 21st 2007 12:13PM
that's a 25 dollar solar panel BTW.
Kamokazi @ May 21st 2007 2:30PM
If he is endorsing Sony laptops I'd have to believe he actually has a life...no geek would be caught dead doing something that stupid.
Joe @ May 21st 2007 1:44PM
Brilliant ... now if they could only cool down the CPU in my laptop.

Ok, great, but how long does it take to bring a room temperature beverage (mostly water) down to 47degF? I'm betting a lot more than 5 minutes (try an hour or two).
But, then, maybe these solid state coolers are a lot more efficient than the ones I've played around with...
fredthehead @ May 21st 2007 5:51PM
You guys missed the point entirely. This is clearly drug paraphernalia. Im gonna get one and put my weed in it! Keeps it handy, and fresh! After all, nobody would actually pay money to keep 1 can cool, but an ounce of headies? Its priceless!
Friedmud @ May 21st 2007 7:19PM
I think I might pick up one of these (or the open air type) myself.
This would be really useful at LAN parties (especially Quakecon). At QCon you usually get _slightly_ chilled Bawls... it would be nice to use something like this to cool it down further and keep it cold longer.
Not too mention that it's just kinda cool ;-)

Hmmmm i wonder if it can be modded to set the thermostat temperature higher.
I've been looking at making a low power peltier cooler to store condoms in my glove box. This may just do the trick lol.
Stian @ May 22nd 2007 10:52AM
ooohh...overclocking this with a Peltier would kick ass :-)
Alan @ May 22nd 2007 12:59PM
@ Steve
Um, you are aware the the heat doesn't just "disappear", right? All refrigerators blow hot air out somewhere. You would need to cut another hole in you case, at least.
BB Monster @ May 22nd 2007 3:59PM
I guess I'm a cheapy and opt for the cooler with beer under the computer desk. Its low tech, but it got me through my computer programming courses.

....I'll grab the dorks, use them to bat geeks away, FRAG everyone till I've had my fun, and THEN drink a Coke cooled with this thing.
ALL PWNED.
now just shaddup and buy the damn thing if you want.

I want to have one,but I cann't find it.I don't know how to get one.Who can tell me ?
David MacMillan @ Jul 4th 2007 11:11AM
Screw a USB microfridge. Just figure out a way to convert the random heat energy coming off of the CPU into directed electrical energy and then you cool your PC down AND you save electrical costs.
Wait - would that violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics?

I have a USB fridge, mine arrived today, it takes it a while to cool the can of drink but it does a fine job for the size of it. I left my can of coke in there for about 1 hr (forgot about it) and it was nice an chilled
Crazy Noongar @ Dec 13th 2008 2:20AM
just attach one of those solar usb chargers and it becomes a stand alone fridge. Or place it inside your PC case to make it cooler
