Seems like only yesterday -- ok, 4 days ago -- we were telling you about the
DViCO M-4000SA HD media player. Now they're back with the M-5100SH which bests the former with 1080p support, HDMI output, and H.264 decoding. It still packs Ethernet for plenty of in-home media streaming and of course DViCO will be more than happy to throw in a 3.5-inch, 512GB SATA disk for a fee. But why not save some bills-per-byte and double your capacity with a
1TB Hitachi disk purchased elsewhere. You can also add WiFi and an optional ATSC tuner to create a full-featured 1080i video recorder. Decent but standard stuff so far; what's odd is the pricing. The cylindrical M-5100SH is only available for pre-order and will cost $439 when it ships next month in Japan and presumably parts beyond. Meanwhile, the boxy M-4100SH offers all the same features as the M-5100SH yet costs only $359. Oh, and it's available domestically now. Of course,

The lack of technical information is embarrassing. "H.264 support" means very little without specifying which profiles it supports (i.e. Are my videos going to work?).

OK, why does Engadget feel the need to bring race into this article? What, are black MacBook owners cooler than their white counterpart? I may not be the hippest guy in the world, but I like aesthetics just as much as the next guy. I really don't see where race plays a part in this. Come on now, can't we all just get along?

It's pretty lame to still confuse MB and GB in this day and age.
This type of device has been done before (e.g., Pixel Magic MB100 HD Mediabox). The main problem is that most, including the MB100, have pretty crappy interfaces. I would really like to see a vid or a few screen shots of the interface.
The interface can be skinned.
The difference to Pixel Magic MB100 is that this Dvico one actually works. Dvico also offers frequent firmware updates unlike Pixel Magic.

its funny - the XBMC is probably still the most popular media player going.. no built-in DRM, cheap hardware, great codec support - and all supported by open source, so no company is going to disappear and leave you without updates.
something like this will knock it off its perch when u get HD playback - and PVR recording..
