Samsung and PureDepth show off 46-inch Multi-Layer Display LCD
It's been a tick since we'd heard anything out of PureDepth, but apparently, the company and its Multi-Layer Display technology are still livin' it up. Making a comeback with Samsung, the two firms are jointly debuting the "world's largest" MLD LCD TV, which rings up at 46-inches diagonally. The actual monitor is being showcased at the Society for Information Display conference in Long Beach, California, and blew past the previous champion which was holding strong at 30-inches. PureDepth is describing its technology as a "a layered, multi-dimensional (using real depth between two or more LCD panels) viewing innovation that enables users to simultaneously view two separate fields of data on one monitor," which is simply a fancy way of suggesting that users can experience "3D-like images" sans unsightly goggles. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether this unit is actually slated for commercialization, but considering the somewhat sour reputation that other 3D devices already have, it's got a rough road to hoe.

I'd really like to see this tech in a nice head mounted display.

I remember seeing something like this in person in CES or something, it's a very nice though some parts were a bit blurry. Maybe it was part of the depth design but I'm not used to it yet. Hope this works and goes commercial at least.

this sounds really lame. Unless they have hundreds of these layers(in which case it would cost a small fortune), it'll look about as 3D as Paper-Mario.

I saw it at CES also, it was an LG screen and you are right, it was pretty blurry and to get the best view you had to be directly centered on it.

I’ve enjoyed reading this blog daily since it’s inception with no complaints, and I’m ordinarily not one to point out typos or grammatical errors. That said, a line at the end of this piece aggravates a pet peeve of mine.
"...it's got a rough road to hoe"
One does not hoe roads, rough or otherwise. The phrase is actually “Tough ROW to hoe”, that’s “row”, as in a garden row or the rows in a farmers field.
Thanks, I feel better now.

I hoe rows...

I saw something very much like this at the Sci-Fi museum in Seattle. It was a touch screen (about 20" if I had to guess) and had 2 layers of LCD with the front one being semi-transparent. I have to say it looked extremely cool...can't imagine what practical use it would have though!

I went and saw it today, the objects don't pop out at you, but you do get a sense of depth that other displays don't give you. It wasn't blurry either. And there also isn't a viewing angle problem. LG may have been demoing a different technology.

there's that word 'sans' again..

I am the original inventor of the PureDepth MultiLayer LCD screen technology. My name is on the base patents used by PureDepth., Inc. I have invented a new ultrahigh resolution screen which is superior to the PureDepth screen. This new screen will display live video imaging as well as computer graphics. I was under a 'Non-Compete' contract with PureDepth and its major shareholder until the contract expired on April 1st, 2007. My new screen design is called "Multilayer Offset Video Imaging System" - MOVIS. The resolution will be the highest ever achieved.
