Meizu's M6se: nano-thin with video and FM tuner for $100 less
If you're a fan of Meizu's audio gear then you'll be stoked at this, the skinny Meizu M6se. At just 7-mm (0.28-inches) thin, it extracts the bulk from the original M6 while remaining true (for good or for bad) to the original design and control. In case you're keeping track (and we know you are) the new M6 packs an extra 0.5-mm (0.02-inches) of negligible chub compared to its famously slim iPod nano competitor. Yet it packs a relatively massive 2.4-inch QVGA display and FM tuner. You can still expect support for all the MP3, WAV, OGG audio and AVI video you can stuff into its 8GB of flash for an incredibly cheap $130. Right, that's about half the cost of the 8GB nano assuming the price remains the same when these hit domestic markets. So if you buy on price and specs vs. emotional appeal and a friendly ecosystem, well, you'll want to keep an eye on that August ship date.

Better than the iPod. It just is. In almost every way.
Gil @ May 24th 2007 5:34AM
Those are some sweet features for that price. If it's mass storage compliant I'll buy it just to have it handy.
Di @ May 24th 2007 6:06AM
Meizu rocks!

Meizu -one of my favorite Chinese knockoff producers with so much style and features

That's not the SE but the original M6 which is 10mm thin, not 7.
Sir Timmy Timbit @ May 24th 2007 7:14AM
That is sexy!

I love Meizu, one less reason anyone would own an iPod...
Microsoft should buy this company and have them produce the Zune 2.0
chris @ May 24th 2007 8:47AM
I have an original M6 and have been waiting for the 8GB version to pop it's head for US domestic availability... I'd have never touched an iPod before anyway, but when I got this.. certainly all bets were off. It's a very nice player... so unless you're married to the annoyances of iTunes, this just does it.

I have always wondered why engadget has to mention Apple in every one of their stories, even when the product in question is obviously superior. I have also always wondered why there is a Mac vs. PC ad on every single one of their stories.

Walgreens slashed the price of the 4GB version, it's now the same price as the 2GB > http://tinyurl.com/2hr27b
I hope they stock up on the 8GB soon!
Ignacio @ May 24th 2007 9:57AM
Awesome! Of course, by the time this ships (August) the new iPods will almost certainly be out too, so it will be an interesting fight.
Beef Stallmer @ May 24th 2007 10:05AM
Anyone know whether these things play DivX and XVid? If so I'm really interested!
JohnTitor @ May 24th 2007 10:47AM
pretty much any non-iPod video player plays DivX/XVid
other than the Zune of course
Nate Riley @ May 24th 2007 10:51AM
I know this site is MSFAN crowded but this is such an Apple Ipod Rip off look at the colors the background the buttons not to metion the GUI.
Josh @ May 24th 2007 11:45AM
So basically what you're saying is, it's a product with Apple's good aesthetic design, good UI design, and great ease-of-use, but without DRM-laden iTunes, and with more format support -- not to mention being reasonably priced?
harpreet @ May 24th 2007 11:23AM
impressive
but still meizu doesn't have steve jobs in it so not many will wanna buy it!!!
Juan @ May 24th 2007 11:55AM
Looks like it'll beat the pants off my Sansa. Not that I need a second player, but at that price...
Aaron @ May 24th 2007 12:00PM
That thing is slick as hell. If it's still that cheap when it comes State-side, I'll be picking one up hands down. Beats the shit out of the overpriced Nano.
anonymouspimp @ May 24th 2007 12:14PM
Oh get real... Sure the older Meizu players were total knock offs of the iPod... (if a Chinese manufacturer knocking off a successful product shocks you, you just dont get it...) but I don't really see this one as a solid knock-off...
The only way its similar is that it is white. And I am pretty sure the iPod isn't the first company to have a "white" consumer electronic device.
The buttons are different. The way you hold the device is different (sideways). The specs are better. And if the user interface is the same (or similar) to the iPod's, I am sure they will have to pay some sort of royalty to Creative Labs, who holds the patent for it, just like Apple did.
When will you iPod Zealots understand that Apple is the original DAP knock-off artist? Apple completely ripped off Rio. Changing the color of something does not make a product completely "innovative." Get over it. The only thing Apple did that was "innovative" was have a closed ecosystem. However, brilliant as it was to get people stuck in their closed ecosystem, that "innovation" was spawned by greed.
But if you want to complain all day about someone knocking off a knock off... knock yourself out.

I bought an M6 at Walgreens.com for $99 to replace my aging iPod mini at the gym. And as an owner of a Mac Mini and Macbook I personally love to see products that are actually competition for Apple's.
Every DAP I've used (SanDisk, Samsung, Creative), just can't touch Apple, but not so with the Meizu. I'd say it was a damn good buy. Not perfect for sure, but for the price I can't complain.
Jeffrey @ May 24th 2007 10:42PM
Bought the 4GB version of the original M6 in Beijing for $88USD taxes in just last week. Came with an official wall charger and skin case too!
Being Mass Storage Complient, having a quality voice recorder, video and tons of other features, its the best player I've ever owned. This player has everything any other mp3/video player does, but it does it MUCH BETTER. The sound quality kicks ass and even the included earbuds sound like Sennheiser MX500s.
Jeffrey @ May 24th 2007 10:47PM
Oh and it supports FLAC and fully customizable graphic equalizer for you audiophiles out there :P
For you photo nuts, it can read my 9MP JPEGs no problem as well. A bit slow, but it actually does it. Playlists OTG is pretty hot too.
Meizu miniplayer is literally the best music player out of the endless sea of chinese music players... GET ONE!

Is it saying that it may come out in August 2007 or 2008... I've had my interest in the M6 and I've looked around the net about the SE edition. In another site I read that it will be released in August 2008... :'(
I really hope thats not true because I'm really anticipating for this player and I don't want to wait for more than a year for it. I might as well just get another player that will probably be better than the SE in the near future. But then again, there is a possibility that it may be coming out in 2008 because a 8GB for $130 is pretty crazy, since the 4GB right now is around $200. By 2008 the prices might as well drop below $100. If anyone has a solid info, please let me know :/
Abe @ Jun 25th 2007 1:03AM
"Is it saying that it may come out in August 2007 or 2008"
It was announced that it would be available in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007.
BUT
There have been announcements since then which have pushed back the date.

Some suspect that this is because Meizu needed more of its people working on their M8 which is a competitor with the iPhone (though it runs Win CE). Here's an engadget article on the M8:
