PS3 1.80 firmware is out and streaming your media
The PS3 1.8 firmware is out and making its way global in Sony's typical rolling release cycle: APAC, Europe, then the Americas. We'll be testing it ourselves later but we thought you'd like to peep the first screen shots of DLNA-enabled media sharing in the PS3's XMB interface. In this case, Hardcoreware turned on media sharing within Vista (Home Premium or Ultimate, we presume) and voila, their updated PS3 detected and played music, pictures, and video stored on their networked PC -- just like their Xbox 360. Of course, this should work on any DLNA-supported PC (yes, Macs too) or media device including PSPs when the firmware update is released next month. A nice shot in the arm for the Digital Living Network Alliance and good news for PS3 owners everywhere. Hit the read link for more pictures.

Does the media streaming feature support streaming a dvd iso that's been ripped to a pc harddrive? Or would doing this require using a twonkyvision type utility to convert the media live (which seems like it would be pretty demanding of the pc to on-the-fly convert dvd quality video)?
actualy iv noticed that when using wmp11 it dosent use all that much ram at all only using like 22mb ram when i steam to my 360 and around the same to the ps3 i have both consoles and the graphics are well rounded on both they both have good exclusive games for them it will always be like this whear u need all the next gen systems to play all the best games i do like 360 xboxlive but i like ps3 online being free their are so many ups and downs of both systems but both of them will never be the same
PS3 can play you can an extension of .VOB file to .mp4, and it should play on your PS3. Im not sure about streaming ISOs.
And who gives a rats ass about displaying 720P in 1080i. all you would ever want ti output from your PS3 is 720P and 1080P. a TV that only does 480P/1080i is either and old or cheap TV. Soory to say it but its old. My oldest tv is 5 years old, 65" projection with DVI, and even that does 720P/1080i. come on now, this is a next gen console requiring a next gen TV. dont buy a car tha requires premium gas then complain to hte car manufacturer of the gas prices. This is a copy and paste.
OK, lets put it this way.
PS3 is a next gen system requireing next gen devices. you dont try to put a PS3 game into a PS2?? what, tell Sony to patch a PS2 so it can play PS3 games.
This is what PS3 should be like. A PS3 game requires a PS3 console, HDMI/component, HDTV that supports 720P/1080P. Its an HD console, it should only play in 720P or 1080P.
heres what sony did to make the PS3 better
allowed people to use composite cable for normal TVs
allowed people to watch/play in 480P
allowed people to watch regular dvds
allowed people to play PS2/PS1 games
and how did they make it better
added PS1/2 upscaling
added dvd upscaling
added bluray downscaling to 720P
all that Sony Needs to do is allow 720P games to run 1080i. the way i see, Sony has been genrous soo far and if it takes time for 720P to play in 1080i, it takes time. And if they never implement it, well, 720P games were meant to play at 720P. Sony was nice enough to let us play it at all at 480i/p for people who do not have current TVs. after all whats a next gen console, a console that does 720P/1080P for everything, not 480P/1080i.
We can all hope that sony will have an update that will do 1080i, but if they dont, they've already done soo much for us already.
resolution itself does not make a game with good graphics, there are also textures, shading, lighting, effects, FPS, resolution, all that makes a good game. Its not sony fault that your TV is inadequate. i wouldnt play PS3 on a 20 year old TV, then complain to sony that they didnt deliver on their HD promise. SO dont complain that you're using a PS3 on a 1080i only TV, then complain to sony that they didnt deliver their promise, and youre stuck playing games in 480P, which is still good graphics by the way compared to PS2/xbox 1 games.
they have 32" LCDs that support 720P for $500
and they have 50" DLP projections for a $1000, so money is not an issue, stop being cheap and make a move. and even if you can save up to afford that, dont complain to sony for your deficiencies, for real.
Allen, i agree w/ you about 100%. I mean, for all the people who have TVs that support ONLY 1080i, they're old. Not just old, but very old...the people that have these TVs are probably the early adopters of HD who were snatching up their sets in 2000 or prior. For all these people who have older CRT tube or CRT projection TVs, i mean, i saw a 50 toshiba dlp for 999.99 @ best buy. Why would you wanna spend 500 or 600 on a video game console, and then complain that it doesn't work all that well w/ your 10 year old tv?

VLC integration via sample playlist
VLC is a streaming server which can be used to transcode video on the fly. Via a simple playlist this application can be used and integrated with TwonkyMedia. Just place the provided file vlc.import.playlists into the twonkymedia.db directory.
Start the VLC application and select the streaming wizard. After selecting the file you wish to stream you need to set the output to HTTP streaming via port 8080.
The VLC playlist file has this content:
#VIDEOLIST
#NAME:VLC
#TITLE:VLC - Stream
#DEFAULT-EXTENSION:mpg
http://127.0.0.1:8080
Nothing better than streaming music from your computer to your xbox 360.... Gotta love Microsoft for having the foresight to have the 360 act as an extender.
