Stealth Computer's LPC-450 mini PC
Itching for something to match real pretty with your $1,195 Stealth Computer keyboard? If so, the very same company has recently unveiled a miniature PC that costs just marginally more than the 'board itself, but the LPC-450 packs some pretty decent specs into a battle-ready 5.7- x 9.9- x 1.65-inch enclosure. The slightly unattractive case can pack a wide range of Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, up to 1GB of RAM, a DVD writer, between 80GB and 160GB of hard drive space (or an SSD for a serious upcharge), your choice of operating system, Intel's GMA950 integrated graphics set, gigabit Ethernet, and a plethora of ports including audio in / out, VGA out, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, RS232, FireWire, and even a parallel printer port for kickin' it like it's 1995. The case itself is said to be made of "rugged extruded aluminum," and the only fan noise should come from the one keeping the CPU from getting too toasty. Stealth's wee machine can be picked up now for just under $1,400 in the base configuration, but specing it out like you truly desire will push things quite a bit higher.

while the pricing isn't that pretty, they do deserve some recognition and hands up for all others to follow: give consumer the choice of NO Operating system, $0.00
Azzy @ May 26th 2007 10:52AM
Does it come with free disembodied hand?
Seriously though, why would someone buy this over a $600 mac mini?
...and not that it really matters, but It's fugly!
Gil @ May 26th 2007 11:16AM
It's for special applications that require VERY small computers. The mac mini is huge compared to this thing
trainwrecka @ May 26th 2007 10:52AM
not exactly equipped with the sleekness that is the mac mini... but i'll give em an "e" for effort.

Lol, includes - Cousin IT from the Adams Family. I thought I was buying the hand, cause the computer isn't that flash on its own. a disembodied hand that does tasks for you, now that's something special.
Blackster @ May 26th 2007 11:01AM
looks like a good choice for a carpc!

Not to argue, but I wouldn't say the mac mini is huge in comparison. In fact, the LPC is larger in volume.
84.5 cub.in vs. 93.1 cub. in
I can see applications though were the LPC would work better...
Meltz; @ May 26th 2007 12:26PM
That thing looks like it'll fit into a cd bay in a normal sized case. That'd be pretty sick to have a whole seperate PC hidden inside a PC
catfish @ May 26th 2007 12:43PM
I wonder if that would fit in a car stereo slot... Lot of potential there i think for an in-car pc. (yay google maps)
David @ May 26th 2007 8:18PM
Precisely what I was thinking.

Ha. Nice to see that Cousin IT is still working after all these years. Maybe he's trying to revive his career--starting with endorsements...
Phillip Donley @ May 26th 2007 1:53PM
It looks so sleek and inovative. WHERE DO I BUY IT?
sinhumane @ May 26th 2007 2:17PM
cousin it was the hairy one... 'thing' was the disembodied hand.... guess after addams family, he had a tough gig...
Sean D. @ May 26th 2007 2:34PM
It's $1910 to get that thing with a DVD-RW, a C2D 1.83, 1GB of RAM, 120GB HDD, and an operating system pre installed... A similarly equipped MacMini is $974... and with the money you save, you can go buy yourself a PS3 and an XBox360.
And no, a MacMini is not "huge" compared to it...
MacMini: 2"x6.5"x6.5" (84.5 cubic inches)
Stealth Mini PC: 1.65"x5.7"x9.9" (93.1 cubic inches)
Ottscay @ May 26th 2007 3:15PM
Looks like "Thing" from The Adams Family is a spokesperson (er, spokesthing?) for Stealth Computer.
Azzy @ May 26th 2007 4:56PM
not to start a mac/pc war but:
1) non-compatible with what??
2) even if you can give me a good answer to #1, you could always just install windows/linux/whatever-you-want on the mini. In fact you could install all three if you wanted to.
And just as another side note, I think 9.5 inches is too freakin deep for a car installation (in the dash at least). The thicker but shallower mini would fit much better, although the LPCs front ports are much more handy in that application.
Sorry to argue, but I think the LPC is pretty uninspiring -- ESPECIALLY for that much money. If it was half that price, I might have more respect. The only thing the mini doesn't have in comparison is the parallel port. Oooooooooh, 25 year old technology. On top of that 1G ram max? This has nothing to do with fanboyism either...its a simple comparison of price/performance/hardware. If it was smaller, more capable, and maybe a bit more attractive -- or cheaper -- I'd be all over it.
purezerg @ May 26th 2007 5:30PM
you in install OSX in this LPC just like i installed OSX in my opteron system.
John P. @ May 26th 2007 7:34PM
Hmm, the placement of the hand makes me think of Dr. Otto rather than "thing".
Russ @ May 26th 2007 7:40PM
yes, that hand was pretty odd to see revealing at the bottom of the screen as i was scrolling down.. hmm, what's the flesh hairy coloured blob.
David @ May 26th 2007 8:18PM
It doesn't have a parallel port.
Also, I'm in love.
Robert Baker @ May 26th 2007 11:21PM
What's so new about this? There are other companies who have been offering very similar systems for almost half the cost for that past several years. Some with more features and/or options. Check out offerings from Simplified Innovations for example http://www.simplifiedinnovation.com/

"Not to argue, but I wouldn't say the mac mini is huge in comparison. In fact, the LPC is larger in volume.
84.5 cub.in vs. 93.1 cub. in"
And that's not even including the volume of the hand.

My previous employer used the LPC-301 units (P3-1Ghz) to use as a front end unit for a touch screen system. These units are quite loud when on so you don't really want one of these at home unless you get their fanless units. I had 3 of these under my desk for testing and you only really appreciate how quiet things are after you turn 'em off. Other than that, they were great little systems that are quite rugged and hold up quite well in an environment without too much air circulation. I wished I had borrowed one. Finally, they aren't smaller than the Mac Minis, as others have already pointed out. They are quite long.
The ZeroCorpse @ May 27th 2007 1:18AM
My MacBook has better specs, slot drive, a gorgeous glossy LCD, and cost LESS than this little monstrosity does.
Why would you spend $1400 on what is essentially a Mac mini without Bluetooth, Wifi, or the ability to dual-boot into OS X and Windows?
Who, exactly, is this thing for, anyway?
pallavnarang @ May 27th 2007 3:22AM
Dude! That hand is scary!!
adrian @ May 27th 2007 4:29AM
Halloween isn't for a few more months guys.
Maybe a flag would have been more appropriate.

Sorry, I from TWN, English is not good enought.
some machine can not check its value by appearance. Mac mini really has many many very advantage for consumer market(Home, office..). The LPC-450 appearance is "bad", but its has very good reliability & performance for other markets ( like indusity, commercial, Car...), If their case design liker mac mini, the cost certainly up and up. This is my thinking point , thank you.
Inner LPC-450 of the mainboard , I design it on my CARPC that pleace to 1-din space under instrument panel ( you know the temperature in car will be 60 degree more in summer )
