Apple TV gets 160GB disk... and YouTube too
That's right, Google's YouTube is coming to Steve's little AppleTV "hobby" as he described it during his gig at D. The little treat Steve left out at the show is a new build-to-order 160GB disk; 4x the original capacity offered by Apple at launch. Of course both of these hacks were already available for you DIYers. Still, it's always good to get it via official channels, eh? The new AppleTV with beefier hard disk will be available tomorrow for $399 while the free YouTube update will be available in mid-June.

I doubt that anyone posting negative comments on the apple TV has sampled on the in store. I checked one out the other day and was pretty impressed. The interface is apple-easy and it streams content like photos and music and stores videos and shows. Apple TV seems like a trivial release for fan-boys and hobby-ists, but considering how much network content they have and movies and the fact that there has been some 250 million + copies of itunes downloaded, I think we're going to be surprised where this product goes. Netflix and others are trying to get into the download market, but you still have the problem of getting from your computer to the tv, Apple has solved the problem and with iTunes on 250+ computers, you can see where this is leading.
a little shareware program called TubeTV by By Chimoosoft already lets you download YouTube videos.
The AppleTV is for people who don't wine about money. It's a particular product that does a particular job. Some people can't grasp the idea of a simple wireless device that is designed solely as a fun way to extend your iTunes to your TV. Get over it. Grown up people can appreciate the Apple TV for what it is along with grasp it's possible potential. You can't compare it to a 360, their is no competition to the Apple TV because there isn't a device that carries the same principles or quality.
It's only a matter of time until we see Apple unveil Karaoke on the Apple TV!
Seriously what the hell do people have against the apple tv? I have never seen such visceral hate directed against a product. Every one knows that they don’t have to buy one if they don’t want to right?
I have both an xbox 360 (den) and an apple tv (family room). I really like both products and wouldn’t trade one for the other. The advantages I think the apple tv has over the 360 as a media server is that its smaller, doesn’t sound like a jet engine taking off and automatically syncs with itunes. The last one is a big deal to me because my only computer is a laptop and don’t feel fetching it every-time I want to turn on a little background music.
I am genuinely curious though. If you had no interest in playing games and only had a laptop (i.e. no server from which to stream) is there a better option then the apple tv?
I will likely be one of the few that is really pleased about this announcement. I saw several comments about "who cares about crappy lo-rez (sic) video on my HDTV set". I care! YouTube is just begging to break out of their desktop ghetto and become what it can really be -- a legitimate alternative to existing television distribution. You have full-length documentaries in Googlevideo, archive footage that isn't available anywhere else.....and timely bits of ephemeral video. It is the big gaping hole in AppleTV that needed to be filled; leveraging the ability of a flattened distribution system like YouTube, and putting it in my living room, bypassing the need to have stuff on my other computer in order to play it.
I have been doing this very thing using my Nintendo Wii -- it supports flash video as well through it's browser -- and the big issue is making navigation "remote friendly", which I expect Apple will figure out. This is quite a big announcement, and hints at other things that Apple has in store for this box.
I think the AppleTV is definitely an elegant way to interface with the TV. But pretty much everyone who has a computer all ready has the capability to interface with a TV for a fraction of the cost. I don't get why it's such a big deal.
Right now, I have an HD to TV set-top box that connects and plays netflix "Watch it now" movies. It's called a laptop--one of my old ones with a vga to vga connection that still outputs pseudo-high def (based on connection speed) to my LCD HDTV. Oh yeah, I have an Apple TV except it's a hard drive connected to my wireless network and don't have to purchase movies on itunes to use it. PLUS, it interfaces with my DVR.
Nice try Apple. I still like you.
Cheers
Meegan ; )
oh yeah, i can also watch google AND youtube on my tv. An earlier poster got it right when they said the AppleTV isn't for geeks.
xxoo
I'm already watching YouTube videos on my big screen LCD (they look horrid) and the application I use is the Opera browser on my Nintendo Wii. Oh, and it also lets me surf the web, do email, instant messaging, etc.
Smell the coffee.
