LG's 22-inch FLATRON M228WA LCD doubles as HDTV
LG's FLATRON M228WA won't go down as the first LCD display that can hold its own as a television monitor, but this 22-incher does a decent job at catering to both sides of the equation rather than leaving one aspect feeling slighted. Dubbed the flagship device in the M8W series, this unit sports a widescreen aspect ratio, 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, 3000:1 contrast ratio, five-millisecond response time, Digital Fine Contrast (DFC) technology to sharpen up images, and a pair of three-watt stereo speakers built right in. As for the port selection, you'll find DVI, S-Video, component, HDMI, composite, and VGA, and while this may look mighty tempting for an all-in-one solution to your current display dilemma, we're not sure how much it'll cost you when it finally lands.[Via PCLaunches]

Need For Speed: Most Wanted, good sir.

i have a similar LG 22", it doesnt have speakers or a composite input but i has the component and hdmi inputs and i have my desktop, laptop and xbox 360 attached to it. cost me around 450 $ CAD. cant think of a better deal for a HDTV for a student !
Jonathan Keim @ Jun 2nd 2007 6:11PM
Wow! I need an upgrade; 3000:1 contrast is pretty sweet. Just make it 24" and easy to switch between component, hdmi and DVI and I'll hook myself up
morfinx @ Jun 2nd 2007 6:14PM
I have a LG L245WP that is already doing double duty. It's 24" 1920x1200, HDMI (HDCP), Component, and VGA, and comes with a HDMI->DVI adapter cable. It also takes 1080p/720p signals.
Jesse S @ Jun 2nd 2007 6:37PM
Ummmm...ANY LCD can double as an HDTV...Seriously, nothing special, unless it includes a tuner or something.
How is this any different than any other comparable LCD?
WTangoFoxtrot @ Jun 2nd 2007 6:43PM
its different because it can accept component and HDMI. also and most importantly it has a scaler so that a 720p or 1080i image can fit in properly. trying to send HD signals on VGA/DVI will give troubles as you will not be able to fit 720p etc properly in your screen.

My favourite LCD screen that doubles as an HDTV is the BenQ 24" FP241WZ
http://www.benq.com/products/LCD/?product=839
Behold the 1080p awesomeness.

The article linked may have reported some duff information, this particular model has been on pre-order in some UK online stores for some time. The 3000:1 contrast is only possible in dynamic contrast mode, which apparently not to clever. This model does include a TV-Tuner but not an HDMI port. The interfaces are infact D-Sub, DVI-D, CVBS (Composite), S-Video, Component, SCART, PC Audio In/Out
I hope this info is correct, anyway... here is my source... (I can't find it on LG's site!)
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3348756/LG-M228WA-22-Widescreen-LCD-Monitor-With-TV-Tuner/Product.html
There is another model (the 22LS4R) on it's way that DOES have an HDMI port but it loses the DVI connection instead. Otherwise the specs appear identical. Links comin up...

Hope that clears things up a bit... (i'm not trying to market that website i just happen to be in the market for such monitor and found it the other day!)

Bloobie @ Jun 2nd 2007 7:43PM
Skip this one, folks. It doesn't even support full HD (with that 1050 resolution).
Nerdtalker @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:10PM
What's so special about this? My 24" BenQ 241FPW has a 1920x1200 resolution (so real 1080P), HDMI, Component, S-Video, composite, D-Sub, and DVI-D built in.
I use it all the time to run my Xbox 360 at 1080P, and it'll work just fine as a TV when the time comes.
gravious @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:23PM
@Nerdtalker
Well... having just looked up the price of your Benq on Amazon.fr (€929) and the price of this LG on play.com (€354) I would say what's special is the price, it's got an analog tuner and D-Sub, DVI-D, CVBS (Composite), S-Video, Component, SCART, PC Audio In/Out so you know, that's okay :)
A better comparison would be the Dell 22" E228WFP for roughly €420
akijikan @ Jun 2nd 2007 8:51PM
lol my 1440 x 900 el cheapo can double as a tuner-less HDTV so I dont' see what the fuss is all about.
OverburN @ Jun 2nd 2007 9:52PM
I'm rocking the Samsung 940MW, kthxbai
LoFidelity @ Jun 3rd 2007 12:30AM
I have a BenQ FP222wh, which has most of the same specs as this LG screen, and let me tell you that for HD viewing 1680x1050 resolution is a problem if you are sensitive to stretched images. The aspect ratio of 1680x1050 is 16:10, not 16:9. I have my PS3 and 360 hooked up to my monitor and while the image quality is fine, the geometry of everything from movies to games is noticeably off. I have grown somewhat used to it but hope that both Sony and Microsoft will support 16:10 resolutions in the future. Consider this before buying a monitor sporting this resolution and aspect ratio.
(Of course, when using a computer to play my movies, the image is fine.)
lee @ Jun 3rd 2007 12:45AM
naver has this listed @ ~450k WON, so looking at around 500USD
looks like a nice monitor
ChrisJ @ Jun 3rd 2007 4:47AM
Around 350 € in Germany.

As said above... make it 24" and give it a built in tuner and I think I might replace my Samsung 940 MW - which is a great multi-purpose monitor, but it's a bit small and lacks proper HD connectivity (Other than the non-HDCP DVI connection)
Lee @ Jun 4th 2007 5:35AM
its £239.99 on play.com, and its got a sd tuner (theres no over air HD in the UK yet) i was looking at ordering it yesterday :)

What LCD monitor/TV's are there that have:
-HDMI -and- DVI
-Speakers w/ PC sound input -AND- internal processing via HDMI
-FULL 1080p resolution (at least 1920x1080)
-16x9 aspect ratio
You need to remember a few things when you go to use your monitor as a TV, and vice versa.
1)sound has to get out of your cable box or PC somehow - HDMI has both sound and video, but DVI does not. A PC's video card with DVI will still need a way to output audio. ie PC speaker cables.
2)you'll want the aspect ratio's and resolutions to be compatible with 1080 TV signals, DVD's, and your PC games. That means you'll want it to be 16x9 and at least 1920x1080. (This LG downscales to 1050...lameness! Also, how can it be "HDCP compliant" when Lee's specs dont have an HDMI input!?)
I'm pretty sure that LCD's sold as TV's may be your only option. Some of them have optical audio and HDMI inputs, which covers all the bases for you. I have yet to see a "monitor" offer that connectivity. Seriously, what monitor/TV's meet each of these requirements?
please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this... sometimes I get confused with HD tech...
d.chatten @ Jun 19th 2007 8:05PM
HD ready TV's can have DVI or HDMI and both can be HDCP compliant, the only differences between the two are the way they connect, also HDMI can but not allways carry both audio and video signals, DVI can only carry the video signal.
digitalhardcore @ Jul 26th 2007 11:04PM
HDCP isn't just a HDMI thing. If you want to watch HD content on your PC you'll not only need a blueray/HD-DVD disc drive, but a graphics card supporting HDCP and a monitor or HDTV with HDCP. HDCP is just the encryption protocol used to protect HD content and it can be transmitted through both HDMI and DVI connections.
