Update: The ads are up on Apple's site! Check 'em out.

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
hah. so an apple employee says that you should buy the extended warranty? that's a hot "insider" tip? BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! apple, or any device manufacturer for that matter, would tel you to buy an extended warranty on a pet rock, just in case it developed a fault line and cracked open.
sweet. Now I can go pick one up at the apple store and plug in my SIM card and away I go. Oh wait I can't because its Crapular. Never mind.
I really want to intercept a truck load of these things, create a video of me blowing them up with home brewed explosives, and post it to youtube. Watch all the fanbois go absolutely NUTS.
"Personally, I'm selling my left nut to get one."
I believe there is a glut of left nuts. Right nuts are in much higher demand, as no one ever seems to want to sell one.
Personally, I'm selling both since I need an iPhone for my wife too. :)
How can you make that comment when you've never even touched the thing? You have no idea whether it's overhyped or not, you're just yammering like an ingn'nt fool.
Can PLEASE someone clarify this for me:
Will people be able to buy it as a standalone/unlocked device from Apple itself (with no ATT contract of whatsoever) ?
Thaanks,
Bennis - no one knows; this is an Apple release. You'll know when its out there.
My guess, based on what we've heard and seen in these new commercials: Nope. Not at all.
The commercials even state a two-year contract is required, leading me to think you won't even be able to get this on a pre-pay deal either.
Plus, by doing what you're asking, you wouldn't necessarily get all the features working (visual voicemail for one, as it's a server-side application).
rotten apple.
I'm upgrading my phone soon. I'm also out-growing my iPod nano. I now want video for the commute to work (news podcasts, latest episode of Heroes etc etc), and as a MacBook Pro user, I would like something that works with what I have at home.
There aren't a lot of good phones that offer seamless connectivity with OS X (I use a Nokia N80 right now - web on it sucks, I really dislike Symbian and its chunky. the network I'm on doesn't offer a 3G service and the camera, whilst being 3mp, is let down by an awful lens) without some hacking.
When I evaluate my choices, the iPhone seems a pretty good bet.
Yes those ads are simple, but so is using the phone (by the looks of things). That's what people want in a phone (and arguably most technology), ease of use. It won't appeal to every market, but any great-selling product never does, that's why there are different products and variations (classic example is the Shuffle, Nano and Pod + Video, three different markets, three different price points).
There may be more technically advanced phones around; there may be more feature packed phones around. But there aren't that many that bring the 'fashion' aspect of the iPod together with user-experience of an Apple product.
For some people, the iPhone will be the best choice. For others, fine, go get a CrackBerry. It's your life.
But I am getting one of these. Period.
dustin worthey,
based on your comments "it's a piece of crap" you obviously must be one of the 8 people on earth who has one, apparently you are so elite you topped, everyone else on planet earth. Or Maybe you should wait till YOU ACTUALLY TRY ONE HANDS ON. GASP!
Crowd: "Look he has got an iphone, lets jump that wanker and steal it"
*crowd beats up iphoneguy really bad - almost kills him but succeeds in getting the phone*
Crowd: "Who is getting the iphone now"
*crowd starts to fight all over the phone really hard*
iFrodo: "We have to return that one phone to rule them all to Apple HQ and toss it in the toilet"
..and so the saga begins ^^
but folks if you are really planning to getting laid with the help of an iphone - there are better ways to spend 600+ bucks, trust me :D
Actually, I'd rather have the HTC s710... Anybody know if this phone would work with T-mobile here in the states?

First off, people need to CHILL OUT! It's like being in a high school cafeteria on the internet nowadays. People can't seem to have a normal discussion without resorting to talking trash about someone or something. The anonymity the internet provides brings out the bad attitudes of people. I like getting my news from Engadget and sometimes normal conversations happen but when it comes to certain topics people get all fired up for no reason. If you like the iPhone, great! If you don't, that is totally cool too. Go grab something else. The iPhone isn't even out on the market yet. No one outside of Apple and certain departments of AT&T have even seen it. We don't even have any plan information yet. All we have is basic info from Apple about functionality (which I PROMISE you isn't the whole deal) and a newly announced availability date. THAT'S IT! If certain features aren't in there when the final products specs are announced, go get something else. How hard is that?
Is talking trash on Engadget going to change anything about what is going on? You think that people from AT&T or Apple are reading these comments saying, "Hey, maybe we should decrease our rates or prices. Maybe we should get 3G into iPhone right now even though AT&Ts 3G coverage isn't all that great and the price per phone will go up." Not a chance. If you don't like something, show it by not buying it. That is how every market works. If something isn't selling, prices get reduced, products get dumped, etc. Bitching on Engadget's comments doesn't accomplish anything besides making you look immature.
Just relax folks. There are bigger issues in the world other than if the iPhone has 3G or GPS. Some people are excited about it. Some aren't. For those that aren't, get an HTC, a Nokia or anything else. Just leave it be. You don't need to be harsh, because ultimately, it makes NO DIFFERENCE.
Actually, I have cingular, and when I called about my phone going bonkers the other day *(razr...omg)* The guy that I spoke to told me that the 2 year contract deal wasn't official yet. So I'm still hoping for it to not be true...haha.
The iPhone looks _awesome_. I would get one if I was in the U.S., despite the AT&T branding.
The ads are... dull. Apple will have to do a lot better in Europe/Asia. Not that Nokia has anything to compete with this product - but Nokia ads are way sharper. Even moto ads are cooler.
ps I mean yeah, the iPhone is probably one of those things that sells all by itself and doesn't need ads... still as an AAPL shareholder I wish they had put some of their creativity into the ads.
Can anybody tell me what has the iPhone that the HTC P3300 doesn't have ? Except the fact that it is heavier ?
>Can anybody tell me what has the iPhone that the HTC P3300 doesn't have ?
Elegance
oh !! you mean the fact that it's a rectangle touch screen, just like any HTC phone, i don't see the big difference, big deal with this phone with an "i" in front of the name. maybe i forgot the white earphones.
Raphael, are you really judging it based purely on the box it comes in? Andrew is right (at least, based on what we've seen); the interface is much more elegant than anything else out there right now.
I have a Treo and I'll only consider an iPhone if/when it has a decent library of third party apps and I've given it a decent trial in a shop (to check out the keyboard). It's unlikely I will ever get an iPhoe at all. Even so, I can easily see that the interface promises to be easier to user (and look nicer) than my Treo and every WinMob I've ever seen.
Wow.. you guys really pulled out all the stops on that graphic there... who would have thought, the iphone with an iCalendar logo on it.. brilliant!
One word: EDGE.
'nuff said.
Not really, they could have at least shown the zoom function with the photos. I assume it's the same for Safari?
Not that it matters, but in the second ad, http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad2/, there's a discrepancy. Check out the icons when he first unlocks the phone. "Settings" is in the 3rd column. The next frame when they cut to a zoomed in shot, the settings icon has moved over and is in the 4th column. They managed to drop the new mail icon from 9 to 8 correctly though.
Either way, I'm psyched for this phone. I'm also confidant they they'll be able to update to 3G etc down the road when its ready without users having to buy a new phone. Remember the 802.11n upgrades in the macbook pros that came with the "n" prior to it actually working? This is apple, there's no way they'd enter into this market without doing it correctly in all aspects.
Who are AT&T Telesales and what is their phone number?
what are the chances of lines forming @the apple stores and AT&T store.
"Minimum two year" deal? I didn't know cell phone companies went longer than two years.
No removable sim card or battery (apparently) and only Cingular for the near future, not even announced in Canada. No thanks. I'll wait for LG to come out with their sweet copycat phone, at least I'll be able to get an unlocked version.
So, will I be able to travel to Europe with this phone? I mean will be a world phone?
my friend works at apple company. he told me iphone has so many bugs.
The phone I was using would show a scrambled
screen when the call ended then start back at the beginning of the video. The
Safari browser is not exactly like in OS X 10. It's very easy to use. When I
would try to quickly go from one application to another, the phone would
lock-up.
I think the iPhone will release earlier than June 29. The conference is the 11th, and apple normally releases products on Tuesdays. I wouldn't be surprised if they released it a week or two before. Especially since the 29th is very close to July 4th - why would they release such a big product on a holiday weekend (employees would want a couple days off at that time). I think apple wants to surprise everyone, that way the people who REALLY want the phone will not even know what day to go and be the first to get one. The employees at ATT may not even find this out until a day or two before if ever. If apple wanted to keep this a secret, they would be smart enough not to tell any ATT or even Apple store employees until right before they launch it = more of a surprise to the general public.
"Guys my ppc6700 can play doom, quake III arena (with multiplayer...makes plane trips much more interesting!), and a ton of other games. It also plays divx movies, ripped dvds, podcasts, any format of music, AND isn't limited to closed platform software. For web browsing hey I've got opera, and it's absolutely fantastic"
You forgot to mention that your PPC looks like a cat puked out a bar of soap.
A stanley kubrick approach to the iPhone ad. Not too bad...not too bad...

Where can you buy the Iphone at? Do you buy it at a Cingular store, or do you have to go to a Apple store?
I just called the ATT order line and they said it would only be sold in att stores and at apple stores. Is there some sort of secret code you need to know to be able to order it via phone and have it shipped to you? I am not looking forward to having to leave work at noon to get in line for a 6pm release.
see who will definitely buy iphone for 499$ - (online US survey) http://www.trendsspotting.com/blog/?p=146
