Hitachi's external Easy Hard Drive reaches 1TB
It seems that Hitachi has been basking in the glory of releasing the world's first 1TB internal hard drive so long that it let a number of others leapfrog it in the external sector, but nevertheless, the company's Easy Hard Drive lineup has now hit the mark. Split into two offerings, the AC-powered External USB Storage device holds 500GB, 750GB, or a single 1TB HDD within a matte black case, and while we're sure it's total coincidence, we can't help but notice the eerie resemblance to the the Xbox 360 Elite. Moving on, the Portable USB Storage unit now holds 160GB, 200GB, or a full quarter-terabyte of space within a pocket-friendly enclosure that's entirely powered via USB. Both drives should be available right now if you're brave enough to enter a Best Buy, and while the portable drives will run you between $139.99 and $249.99 depending on size, the 1TB desktop drive's price still remains a mystery.

looks like a cheap knock off of the western digital mybook
"we can't help but notice the eerie resemblance to the the Xbox 360 Elite"
...complete with red ring of death.
As long as the 1TB is inexpensive.. (and of course, reliable) count me in!
I've been waiting for the "Knight Rider" edition. KITT, count me in!!!
Not a bad price, but is the $139.99/$249.99 mentioned for their store, website, or intranet?
=P
It took them how many months to stick their own drive in a case?
They've been available at Best Buy for the past two weeks for $400, not a bad price considering I spent $450 on a clunky Western Digital 1TB drive (2X500GBs) a few months ago.
Yea, I saw the 1TB and the 500GB this weekend at Bestbuy. The 1TB was a little over $400. I might get it if it drops a little under. All the talk of wind tunnel noise on the 1TB Western Digital pretty much scared me away.
MyBook meets 360 meets Darth Vader meets 1TB of external storage.

Interesting, these external drives are similar in price to their internal drive counterparts.
Hitachi 1TB external = $409.99 (which all BB stores in my area stock)
Hitachi 1TB internal = $399.99 at NewEgg (it's $410-$550 elsewhere!)
Hitachi 250GB portable = $249.99 (only sold on BB site though, and backordered)
Samsung 250GB internal = $239.99 at NewEgg

IF we can easily pry open the Hitachi external/portable casing, will we find a standard SATA drive inside?
Just bought the Hitachi 1TB unit and I love it (Best Buy - $419). I previously had the WD My Book - 1TB (Costco - $384); the software was horrible (Mac) and the fan noise was even worse...I left it off because it could be heard through most of the upper 2 levels of our home. The red light is cool and it's virtually silent.
Is the drive is easily removable from the enclosure, or are all the screws hidden.
Looks like the important screws are accessible - haven't popped the case yet, but it looks like it's feasible.
