According to unconfirmed reports stemming from Taiwan (where else?), Michael Dell is pulling his company out of the LCD TV biz to return focus to its core PC efforts. Unlike Apple's ridiculous desktop display markup,
Dell has concentrated on providing low-cost computer and home theater offerings, something particularly dangerous in the cutthroat LCD TV market, so it's not a total surprise to see 'em bail now. Dell is purportedly set to stop manufacture this month, so we should know soon enough how legitimate these reports are, a Dell spokeswoman wouldn't comment on the rumors, only stating that Dell currently sells LCD TVs in a limited number of markets.

Hmm..I wonder what that means for those of us that have 3+ year accidental coverage warranties...will they still have stock or refund the purchase price.

This is sad if true. Dell has probably the best LCDs on the market. The edges may not have plastic as fancy as Apple's, but the picture quality is amazing. Hopefully this is an unfounded rumor.

@oGM0--
I dont believe this announcement concerns the LCD Computer Screens, rather just the LCD Televisions --albiet, there is a fine line between the two these days.

Oh. Whoops. I can read, really. I blame lack of sleep. ;)

Should we expect to see blow out deals soon?
Xaerran @ Jun 7th 2007 11:52AM
Dell uses Samsung LCD's... Just pay the extra price for the non-renamed samsung :(
Sam @ Jun 7th 2007 12:04PM
Hoping for a sale....

OK, this might be obvious to some, but what's the wise move here, if this is true. Go ahead and quickly buy one while they're still available, knowing they won't be supported when problems arise, or cut bait and run?
nLoD @ Jun 7th 2007 1:25PM
hmm.. Sounds... Familar.. Oh wait Gateway did this with Plasmas!

As far as I know, when Dell replaces a product under warranty you are given a refurbished unit instead of a brand new one. I know that's the way it's always worked with their peripherals (Pocket PCs and DJs). I'm sure that's the way it works with most other things too. Also, after Dell discontinued the Axims, refurbished models were still available. So, one may assume that Dell keeps a certain number of refurbs just for warranty claims.

Just did a check on the Dell UK website. No Dell LCD TVs there at all. Toshiba and Sony are there thou.
TIMMAH! @ Jun 7th 2007 4:50PM
Wise move on Dell's part. The flatscreen TV business is getting very low-margin and cutthroat.
riggs @ Jun 7th 2007 5:06PM
they better sell them super cheap now :D
Richard Lai @ Jun 7th 2007 6:43PM
Good move, Michael. Now concentrate on the PCs and perhaps PDAs too?
DIMEBAG @ Jun 8th 2007 8:26AM
Hmmm… Leave it to engadget to pull Apple into a completely unrelated story just to bash them. You guys are pathetic…

The reason they are probably getting out of it is they are Garbage........ I went through 5 37 inch TV's in a year......... If you own the 26 inch version and it is still turning on, you are the lucky one... they were replacing these out of warranty with other models. This whole TV farce must have cost them millions and has probably destroyed part of Dells reputation.
