Dutch PSPs reportedly recalled over custom firmware fears

Sony's already raised more than a few eyebrows in the Netherlands with its questionable methods of advertising the PSP, and it now looks like it could be drawing some ire as a result of changes to the console itself. According to MaxConsole, Sony has decided to recall all current PSPs from retailers in order to replace them with new, "unflashable" units, presumably in an attempt to clamp down on custom firmware. That bit of information comes from someone Max Console describes as a "reputable dutch distributor," who says that a number of large retail chains have already complied with the recall. From the sound of it, they don't appear to have gotten the updated consoles in return just yet though, leaving anyone shopping for a PSP out of luck for the time being.

Sony are in no way producing "unflashable" PSPs. The entire functionality of the device relies on its ability to write to its own flash memory.
They may release a hardware revision that restricts homebrew via hardware measures, but they aren't going to remove the flash memory of the unit.

That's why I commented. I feel the article is misleading, making people believe that Sony are going to lock down the firmware and make it unable to be upgraded, thus limiting the functionality of the device should Sony release more features down the line.
Is a little bit of journalistic integrity too much to ask for? Or maybe even just a little bit of common sense?

Why exactly are you complaining here then? That was quoted from maxconsole, who quoted it from their source. They can't be 100% sure what Sony might mean by that, so they didn't say. They just quoted their source.

3.03 can be downgraded :) so what jimmy means it fw > 3.03

Ok, so let's say the rumor is true... Why only Dutch units? It doesn't make any sense.

This is from MaxConsole. Not the most reputable site.

More lies from MaxConsole.. can't believe Engadget are even reporting on this.

Its a fucking blog not CNN. Engadget is under no code that states that they need to be any more accurate then the shit I post on my LJ. If you want news, go to a legit news source. If you want a condensed list of what is being announced around the net, true or not, read Engadget.
I really am getting sick of these people. Don't like it? Get bent and go somewhere else.

I for one prefer playing Duke Nukem Forever on my SNES CD-ROM Drive with my ArtLevedev Optimus Maximus.

There might be something to it. Last week we tried to buy a white one for my gf and there was only one shop left (out of a dozen or two) that even had a PSP in stock. It had firmware 2.81 iirc.
Might have also had something to do with the pricedrop though...

This is Patrick from SCEA PR.
Wanted to clarify and let you all know this story on MaxConsole is factually incorrect. There is nothing wrong with the firmware, (as you know the firmware is global) and there has been no recall. The shortage is due to a large increase in sales following the PSP price drop. I think various forums has put some incorrect stories together.
