Motorola SCPL in the wild
Egads, could it be? Journeying a long, thorny path from executive teaser to fanboy mockup to reality, the mythical Motorola SCPL has finally shown up in the hands of someone who isn't a suit-wearing Moto employee. Bearing a fairly strong familial resemblance to the ultra low-end MOTOFONE, Boy Genius tells us that the SCPL is insanely thin -- thinner than the RAZR 2 -- and sports a QVGA display, 2 megapixel cam, quadband GSM, and JUIX. Missing from the specs are 3G data and any sort of memory expansion, but if Moto can get this one out the door with a non-bank breaking sticker price, they may have a winner they desperately need.

Looks kinda dirty...
So does it have the MOTOPHONE's e-ink display?
If so, I'm sold.
Captured in the wild while dining on pan pizza no doubt.
RAZR = Razor
PEBL = Pebble
SCPL = Scrapple?
SCPL = Scalpel?
I believe that they're trying to stick with "sharp" words... so I think that "SCPL" is actually pronounced Scalpel.
MMMMMM Scrapple...
Apparently it wasn't thin enough!
They had to grease it to get it to slide into their pocket. Must be some really tight jeans. ;-)
You could put TWO of these on top of eachother and your stack of them still wouldn't be as thick as the clunky iPhone.
Why oh why does the iphone pervade ALL engadget posts about phones?
Because it's still imaginary and thus, perfect.
Let it exist in the real world for a bit and we'll be comparing things to whateverthehell's next, you'll see.
Edward Vasaline Hands strikes again. :\
At least their previous acronyms had all the consonants to properly discern the sound. I want to pronounce this "Skipple."
I like it...I wish we could have gotten some numbers here on the dimensions. That old school Samsung X820 or whatever still might have its crown.
RAZR, TAZR, FAZR.....so when do we get Michelle?
The Moto designers must really like that candybar design. Shame they aren't using the time they obviously aren't spending on the design trying to come up with a better UI - man, Moto UI sucks
That doesn't look any thinner than the SLVR...maybe it's the camera angle or something
Moto GRSY
You would think the person taking the pictures could have gone the extra inch cleaned the phone a little.
I want my USA-ready quad-band MOTOFONE! When's this going to happen already?!
This is nice, but I want the Motofone.
Ditto. And now that I look at it more closely, this SCPL looks even thicker than both the MOTOFONE and the 'fanboy mockup'. PLUS it has a camera (who cares?) and a glass display (adds fragility and extra weight) instead of a lighter, more-efficient, higher-contrast, and more sunlight-readable E-ink or OLED display.
So basically this SCPL appears to just be a slightly thinner SLVR? The SLVR 2? The profile makes it appear as such:

Motorola announced the MOTOFONE almost a year ago. Since then, they've offered it to just about everybody on the planet but us, the people who are entitled to whatever we desire -- the citizens of the UNITED STATES. I guess they are doing this on purpose, for marketing purposes (our 'rich' U.S. market gets the expensive phones with extra features nobody wants, while third-world markets get the cheaper, simpler phones)?
Check this out -- here's a MOTOFONE next to an Apple remote control. Incredibly tiny:

It's not terribly difficult to find the GSM version (though the price is premium) but I have had no luck with the CDMA.
I believe that this is canceled hardware. It'll never see the light of day (other than in prototype form. I also wouldn't expect to see moto name anything for a while anything other than "razr" "rokr" or one of their other big brands while they are still going strong.
I played with one 2 months back. Not bad looking and feels hefty in my hands.
