Montreal to get WiMAX services soon
Our neighbor to the north will soon boast its own WiMAX-based WiFi rollout, as Montreal is already set to become the "first Canadian city to deliver wireless Internet and mobile IP telephony to residents." Apparently, Radioactif and Nomad Telecom are joining forcing to deploy the network across the metropolitan area, and it will be made first available to the oh-so-lucky residents of Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood. By 2009, however, the network will blanket nearly 300 square kilometers of Montreal and service "around 90-percent" of its citizens, but those targeted for the first wave can expect the luxury to cost them "under $30 per month" when it launches in September.[Via MobileInCanada]

They're NOT the first. Not even close.
Most major Canadian cities have had 'Portable Internet' from Rogers and Bell for almost a year now. It's based on WiMAX like tech and offer broadband internet speeds (1.5Mb down / 256Kb up) over wireless. You need a modem box which is about the size of a largish book and power, of course, but you can move it anywhere, even to other cities, without extra charges.
The base service (128kbps down64Kbps up/10GB per mo) is $25/mo and the full service (1.5Mbps down/256kbps up/30GB per mo) is $50/mo.

It's not free anymore in Toronto (as people from the city call it), it's $40 a month, and I've yet to see a good signal from it.

Hey humpty,
There's that High Speed Unplugged thing from Bell where you have to carry around your modem to connect. Is that what you are talking about?
SJoeMoe @ Jun 15th 2007 1:20PM
That is what he is talking about. We have it here, and they claim 3 Mbps Download. We pay about 60 per month. I have an inverter that I keep in my car to plug it in. I can receive signals in Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton... That is all I need for Alberta. I am just waiting for a Laptop Card that will do the same thing. The size of the modem is a little cumbersome.

There are studying WiMAX here in Sherbrooke, 2hours from Montreal.
Got to get a other wireless router. And what about a laptop? Can't surf outside.
