Joost evaluating its hardware options
Joost, the hard-partyin', beta-stage releasin', streaming TV-service you've been watching on your PC appears to be making baby-steps towards integrating their service with somebody's third-party set-top box. Joost began making public statements this week suggesting that it's already in talks with manufacturers, although we don't know who or where. According to their executive VP of global advertising, "You will see Joost in the living room," which really only makes sense. Paradigm-shifting media delivery platform or not, people still seem to typically prefer to watch TV sitting on their couch and with their TV.[Via BGR]

I know it's a long shot, but it'd be great on TiVo.
Jesse S @ Jun 18th 2007 9:36PM
Joost sucks.
David @ Jun 18th 2007 9:39PM
Come on Apple TV. I might just HAVE to spring the money for it.. I've been hesitant to spend that much money on something I really don't need.
THEVIGODA @ Jun 18th 2007 9:40PM
They'll have to up the video quality before they do anything. I couldn't imagine what it would be like watching Joost on a HD television.
Juaquin @ Jun 18th 2007 9:43PM
I wish they'd focus more on getting new content. The content they have is good, but not much seems to be added very often. I've been staring at the same 4 episodes of Robot Chicken for a couple months now. I demand more Robot Chicken!
h0mi @ Jun 18th 2007 9:46PM
"you've not been watching on your PC"
Corrected.
akijikan @ Jun 18th 2007 9:48PM
Joost is crap
Ellianth @ Jun 18th 2007 11:51PM
I have to agree. Joost sucks balls. Babel gum is a much better implementation of the same idea.
andrew harrison @ Jun 18th 2007 9:56PM
joost isn't great. it's a nice idea but the content is pretty boring.
anyway, i have invites if anyone would like to check it out. hit me up at andrew aatt harrison dott org.
Tim Siedell @ Jun 18th 2007 10:39PM
Joost needs Apple TV.
Apple TV needs Joost.
europria @ Jun 18th 2007 10:40PM
You are missing the point. Joost is not about content. It is about infrastructure. Peer to peer network means, number of client-end-units can grow by demand without too much bandwidth or server investment. A hole in the wall company can broadcast TV or better quality to the World.
This will break the cable and network monopoly on TV. Just like we have more bloggers or Internet radio channels than we can follow, we will have that many TV broadcasts available to us at good quality.
akijikan @ Jun 18th 2007 10:45PM
blah blah blah...give me something to watch
p-diddy @ Jun 18th 2007 11:04PM
europia = geeks/early adopters
akijikan = consumers
Joost is DoA until it has compelling content. It's a nice idea but I was bored within minutes.

andrew harrison @ Jun 18th 2007 10:43PM
so i went to your blog because i like checking new sites out, so why not.
it's terrible. your analyses are crap, and your articles are boring.
10 stupid jokes for people new to technology? stupid is right. i don't know who would consider these jokes, let alone funny ones.
A letter to steve jobs? alrighty then, at least you had something to aim for. pity the things you talk about are boring and off the mark.
stop spamming engadget with your crappy blog. or at the very least, only spam once you have something worth reading.
phoomp @ Jun 18th 2007 10:53PM
@THEVIGODA
Unless your HDTV is running 1080p, the average computer LCD has a higher resolution than the average HDTV. As such, Joost running on a 720p HDTV will look about the same as Joost running on a 1280x800 LCD ... *and* you'll be sitting at least 10 feet away from it.
(hint: any computer display running at 1280x800 or higher *is* an HD display)
Jesse S @ Jun 18th 2007 11:17PM
But the displays are also smaller.

CMAC11 @ Jun 19th 2007 2:16AM
PS3 Joost would be nice.
Diabolical Doctor D @ Jun 19th 2007 2:26AM
I'll joost ur PS3 in the face.
Danbo @ Jun 19th 2007 4:27AM
The only, trifling, problem with Joost is that it's a load of rubbish. Runs very well on my MacBook, GUI is quite pretty, but there is almost literally NOTHING to watch! Only once in about twenty or thirty attempts have I managed to watch anything; some dull US TV series, lots of adverts, duff streaming (even over a very very fast ADSL connection). Afraid it's on my list to uninstall. Far better in the UK just to fork out 50 quid on a USB digiTV stick, and get 50-odd channels any time you want!
Arnaud @ Jun 19th 2007 4:29AM
I pretty muche agree with europria.
The network/p2p community likely to be created by Joost will quickly enable new content to be added. And please DO remember that it's still a beta version. Although I agree it is pretty boring for the moment, you have to think about the concept itself. What if all the programs available on your TV/Cable/and-so-on were all available no matter what time it is ?
Ok, I see some of you are quite reluctant to Joost because of its *currently limited content* but please try to see a little bit further than your very limited beta-user experience !
And by the way, was Skype as powerful as it is now when the beta was launched ? I don't think one can create Kazaa, then Skype and then fail with Joost. (and no, I ain't working for them :)
hamsternator @ Jun 19th 2007 5:06AM
Current research shows that TV usage is down by 20% over the past years - kids growing up are simply not very interested in one-way communication. Joost has 2 things going for it - scalability and the possibility of making everyone a TV producer (imo "ugh", but waddaya do...). A service platform for all the MySpacers, YouTubers etc. And if they're all on Joost, you wanna bet if the big networks want their ads and thus shows there too?
Might be a slow start, but I think this thing will go viral...
zuricher @ Jun 19th 2007 5:09AM
the success of skype has nothing to do with joost. they shouldn't have launched / opened the beta yet. UI is crappy, the content is mostly advertisment and the quality is really bad. if you want real video on demand, get a bittorrent client.
copenhagen @ Jun 19th 2007 5:43AM
Joost on Xbox 360 could be cool
Bunklung @ Jun 19th 2007 5:55AM
Joost will work out of the box on your TV when the SlingCatcher comes out in a few months.
carlos @ Jun 19th 2007 9:50AM
Mike Volpi who was a Senior VP at Cisco Systems (and who some say was next in line to the CEO throne) left Cisco to be the CEO of Joost.
I would not be surprised if Joost teams up with the Cisco-Scientific Atlanta team to go on their boxes (in addition to some kind Linksys piece of the puzzle).
mikeb @ Jun 19th 2007 3:00PM
@ Ellianth
Babelgum would be decent if it were cross-platform. Some small playback issues aside (and it *is* in beta) Joost runs really well on my Macbook and had content I enjoy. Ben Stiller Show, anyone?
TiVo needs to get Joost in on the TiVoCast feature (I mean, at least Joost has *some* content).
james_leonick @ Jun 19th 2007 4:12PM
Agreed that Joost Sucks! They need to get some better programming!
abcdefg762001 @ Jun 19th 2007 5:24PM
this is a ripoff of this
