Meizu's latest MiniOne (M8) incarnation
Here you have it, what looks to be a (re-touched) photograph of a real engineering sample of the Meizu MiniOne (M8). The picture was posted by CEO, Jack Wong, with the promise of more pictures to come in a "few days." At the moment, the 58 x 105 x 11.8-mm M8 is said to carry a spec list which includes a 667MHz ARM11 processor running a Windows CE 6.0 kernel up on a 3.3-inch, 720 x 480 pixel touchscreen display. The MiniOne M8 model will pack GSM with EDGE data while the MiniOne M8 w ("w" for worldphone we presume) is said to go WCDMA/HSDPA/GSM/EDGE. WiFi, Bluetooth, and what appears to be a 3 megapixel camera also come standard with your choice of 4, 8, and 16GB of flash capacities. While we've seen pricing and an "end of 2007" release date before, the specs have changed so dramatically since then that we'll just have to continue holding tight as this pup evolves. You know, if they can actually push this wunderkind out the door.

Wow. I guess its Vaporware. I was really looking forward to getting one of these. Its now July 16, 2008. And no MiniOne M8.
Hey an iPhone!!
What..? What do you mean it's not an iPhone??
I dunno. Looks more like the Prada phone that Apple ripped off when they made their iPhone...
No silly. With the iPhone, you CANT replace the battery. Duh.
@Argot
How specious. Yeah, Apple has only been working on the iPhone for 2+ years in secret and when LG shows the Prada phone in December, Apple somehow copies it in 2 weeks to show off at MacWorld Expo in January.
Apple's engineers are MUCH better than anyone realized, by your supposed insightful observation!
Or maybe you're just drowning in iPhone envy.
God I love the Chinese.
If this becomes something more than vaporware, it will actually turn out to be a better phone than the iPhone. WCDMA and HSDPA before iPhone even has 3G? 3MP camera? Yes please.
Now, if only we had the network to support these 3G+ speeds.
It does sound better that the iPhone. These guys only had to fill the iPhone's obvious gaps. And it will be cheaper, I expect. Let's wait and see.
The Chinese are good at filling the gaps that Apple leaves, remember the Super Shuffle that beat the Apple Shuffle in every category for only a fraction more, price wise?
What's worse is that instead of recognizing the gaps and fixing them, all Apple ever does is redesign the thing with the exact same functionality while trying to sue the other guys out of existence.
If this is real, screw the iPhone, i want this! although i hope they improve the touch screen capabilities of windows CE cause from what i read in a review about the HTC Touch, it isn't that good...
I want more than just pictures!!! Show us a working prototype and i may be interested.
It feels like their just doing this to keep enough interest in the company for them to sell their other products, then later they announce that they arent actually releasing the phone.
Now, where have I seen this thing before?
Oh, yeah iPhone commercials!
Oh wait...!
China's apparently going to have a 3G network up and running sometime soon (as in before the Olympics) so this is probably for preparation- Nokia's already enabled 3G on the phones they sell here (they didn't before because it looked like China would be on TD-SCDMA, thank heavens that was wrong).
Screw Jesus iPhone!
Meizu's MiniONE is the Buda's phone!!!
...Shiva still has a landline, so screw her too... :P
Shiva's a 'he', not a 'she'.
Heh! Your absolutely right! Sorry, I admit it was a stupid mistake, and by the way, please dont take the "screw" thing seriously! :)
BTW, is India planning any kind of cellphone?
Well, I don't really know what you mean when you ask if India's "planning" a cellphone. If you're asking if India's designing any, then yes, companies like LG, Nokia and Motorola have released several phones catered specifically for the Indian market.
India has an unbelievably huge cellphone using demograph, and the calling and messaging rates here are cheaper than anything the US could ever imagine. People who can afford it, or sometimes can't, don't have that much of a problem spending upwards of 500$ on a cellphone. I myself bought a Nokia 7610 when it first came out for around Rs. 25000, which translated at that time to roughly 500$. Since we don't have any contracts with our subscribers, and can purchase any phone (they're all unlocked) and use it with any provider, we're quite better off than the US in that department as well. Of course, we CAN purchase subsidised phones with contracts from a few companies, we can still get any phone unlocked and use it with any service.
On topic: I'm in the market for a phone, and to be quite honest, I screamed and jumped happily like a little girl when Apple announced the iPhone, simply because I would give anything to have my music player and my phone in one device. However, now, I am almost sure that I will not purchase it; the only problem I have with it that I cannot get past is the 8 GB limit. I had a 15 gig 3G iPod that recently died, so I'm pretty much without a music player as well, but I cannot survive on 8 gigs. I have a music library of around 17 GB now, and my playlist that I listen to daily has over 1700 songs; yes, I know each song there and love it. Though I might not listen to them all regularly, I'd still love to have the option of listening to one of my old favorites if I'm on the road and suddenly feel like it someday. 8GB cannot give me that.
If Meizu were to release this thing soon, I'd have bought it without a second thought.
iPhone anyone? Copycats, here we go... Prepare to see the a flood of iPhone-like devices in the near future and allot of Asian knockoffs.
i *suspect* that it's actually already ready to launch, but they're just going to wait for the iphone to come out first and see what else they can add (eg. multitouch), which if true shows that they're really serious about this product (ie. unlike any other 'copies' which are just pushed out asap to earn as much cash before others realise that they're really just pices of junk) and want this to become a real contender of the iphone
and i think their miniplayer/cardplayer actually proves my point, that they're not just like others that 'copy' but they also improve, at an affordable price. i guess this seperates meizu from the copiers, non?
Boo, it looks like an Phone!
So fricking what? Everything's a copy of something and noone bitched about copying the basic cell design with a screen above and buttons below!
If it's gonna be cheaper (it will), with just as many or more functions (and corrected Apple mistakes), and of good quality (and Meizu is definitely not your typical chinese knockoff sweatshop factory) than I say screw the iPhone and all the whining posers and other pretentious Apple fanboys.
endgadget said that they spoke to some peeps from Meizu and it was said that it will "absolutly" and "definatly" play movies back @30fps at the screen's full resolution.
now even though the CPU specs have changed, i believe there must be a multimedia chip in there somewhere to achieve this. i sure hope so, as these PDA devices do more and more they need more processing power. i suspect a Qualcomm or Nvidia chip as they are the most popular.
My 520MHz Fujitsu-Siemens Loox 720 can easily push out Xvid at 640x480, so I'm pretty sure a 600MHz machine can push out 720x480.
interesting, does your LOOX have any multimedia chip at all, or JUST a CPU ?
I've played full-screen VOB's not to mention HD Video back on my 400MHZ HTC Blue Angel with no problems at all. You rarely experience frames being dropped, so I doubt that they would necessarily *need* a new dedicated multimedia chip on the Meizu miniOne/m8. I doubt it would hurt though ;D
there is a screen resolution difference though that would need more processing power. your blue angel is 320*240 and this Meizu is 720*480
So it's the iPhone but better. Yeah, ok, even if it was SO much better (3G isn't an "awesome" improvement), I will be able to have an iPhone on June 29. By the time this is ready to ship, Apple will probably have an HSDPA iPhone out, with real SDK, and most of the features they couldn't get in yet.
Plus, it's running Windows. CE. They have alot of catching up to Apple in the UI area.
I just laugh at all the tech geeks out there that spew up crap like WCDMA/HSDPA/GSM/EDGE and 3.3-inch, 720 x 480 pixel touchscreen display. Remember folks looking good on paper doesn't mean much, will this product have the same user experience as the Iphone? I have yet to use the phone myself, but with Apple's history of releasing really cool software along with its product is what seperates it from other companies. BTW anyone actually see a demo of the HTC touchscreen? The UI looks really lame, and who the hell is going to want to type on something you HAVE to use a stylus on? NOT ME.
Stylus? Why? My touchscreen phone works perfectly with my finger. Ok, so some GUI elements are a bit small, but that can probably be changed. Or just use a fingernail.
What is most humorous about the Meizu MiniOne is that it is a product that doesn't actually exist! No one has ever seen more than a Photoshop-ed mockup of the device and a list of purported features. Amazingly, the original features list was hands and feet beyond what the iPhone (an actual, seen-in-the-wild device) would initially offer.
Not surprisingly, though, that feature list has been continually trimmed down and modified. Now, the MiniOne is only moderately more impressive than the iPhone... but, still non-existent.
Yet, we have a slate of people posting whenever a blurb about this Meizu product appears, that seem to think the thing is formed, produced, and functional. Please folks... notice that every image of the device changes. Notice that every image of the device has been retouched. Notice that you have yet to see even the company CEO actually holding a physical mockup, let alone a working prototype.
Perhaps they will produce this copy-cat phone... perhaps it will have marginally better specs than the iPhone... but why don't you at least wait until it really exists and is actually shipping before you declare it SO much better than a product anyone will be able to have in 11 days!
And, stop decrying how much of a mistake it was not to include 3G in the initial U.S. launch of the device. The 3G networks in the U.S. are nowhere near as developed as they are in other countries. And, while a lot of us tech-heads, comm. geeks, and wannabe electronics gurus, are aware of the benefits/differences/possibilities of 3G, a substantial number of the U.S. cell phone market are not and wouldn't be served by it at the moment even if they were!
Is it just me or are people ranking themselves higher? Are there that many clueless gadget heads out there? "Remember now kids, those iPods suck, too much money and my RIO has more features. Noone will buy one. Apple is going down."
Yeah, and Moto already made an itunes phone. Why did that stink?
Why is the iPhone so different than anything before and any Win Mobile based vaporware you may hear about in the mean time? Intuitive software interface.
Yeah, all phones have a screen, but only after iPhone do we see products like this that have the same layout and color scheme.
It's just like reggae music- you get one originator, and tons of imitators.
@plaidpjs
Meizu is not a company that like to lie to the consumers, and they are know to do ipod killers, don't forget the M6,it's better than nano in very ways, better sound, bigger screen, features like radio and video playback, and for really small price.
Anyway, here is some prices that the M8 may retail in china:
4gb = €190
8gb = €240
16gb = €330 (unconfirmed)
Do you really think there has been an IPOD killer that has been released?!
Yap I think so, not in terms of popularity(that is like...impossible, lol) or software(itunes), but in terms of specs and price, there is some players out there like zen vision:m, m3, m6, stone or even Zen V Plus and other dap's that have better specs and I prefer over iPod's, but it's just my opinion, some people don't care much about that and like the look of the iPod, the sound, and to use itunes, so what can be iPod Killer for me can be an iPod Killed for you.
In fact I'm not a big fan of the iPod look and sound, and I like to have a radio on my dap. The only ipod's that I liked were the Mini, and I like the look of nano 2Gen too (mini alike :D ), but right now for the money I prefer something with better specs/features.
yea i was juiced about the iphone but damn is steve and his cronies making that thing just too damn expensive, from what i read meizu is making this thing pretty reasonably priced, my only concern when it comes out is will i be able to use it on a network here in the states, i have cingular/at&t, would i be able to take it in there and get put on the network, and will i be able to use 3g? I know its first specs only had edge, but im super excited now for the 3g.
Possibly an older link...but here is a size/spec comparison....
I can't wait for this phone. C u later iphone.
http://www.meizu-minione.info/m8_iphone_comparison.php
Who gives a damn about the specs; what makes the iPhone so good isnt some space age technology, but rather the software. It doesn't matter if some other company manages to stick a 3Ghz quad Xeon into their phone w/ a week of battery life- if the OS is an outdated ugly PoS, then the phone is screwed. :)
Get Mac OS X into a Macintosh and tell what's the PoS.
Are Apple fans really this mentally ill? So let me get this straight.. You go OUT of your way to find this thread, so you can stir up BS about "copying" the precious iPhone, and then proceed to rant endlessly ON the thread your cabal has now hijacked about how "jealous" everyone is of the mighty Apple device that NO ONE was discussing until the lunatic Apple fan showed up.
Here's a hint... Some of us real technophiles (you know, the guys that most Apple fans look down their noses at as they sip lattes), just like to see and discuss new gadgets. Oddly enough, thats why we come to ENGADGET. If all you can add is "another CLONE OF APPLE!!!" then PLEASE do everyone and yourself a favor and stick to the MANY Mac fanboy sites where you can all have a nice circle jerk without the nuissance of all those bad "non Apple" products getting seen and talked about.
get a life. it's a free country. no one is going out of his or her way. the hype is because of the release this week. i welcome any and all devices that will enhance my communications needs. iphone will push others to improve. others will push Apple to improve. the chinese do have a habit of copying/cloning/forging/etc. go buy some of that chinese imported toothpaste and brush your teeth.
all china is good at is making imitation dvds, toothpaste and now iphones in some child labor sweatshop.
you know what really annoys me
that apple fans think APPLE invented everything
you all need a punch if you ask me
