AT&T kicks off Video Share rollout
Though phones that support it have been on the streets for a few weeks now, AT&T is just now getting official with its Video Share service. Though the feature is the first to bring 3G video calling to the US, excitement is a bit tempered by the fact that the service is one-way -- callers must manually switch feed directions to see each other, despite the fact that other UMTS networks across the globe already support two-way services. What's more, we can expect to get nickeled and dimed here: Video Share runs $4.99 a month for 25 minutes of usage, $9.99 for 60 minutes, or 35 cents per minute, regardless of whether the customer is already subscribed to a data plan. AT&T claims its "research" has shown a strong demand for stuff like this, but we think we'll wait for generation two (you know, when we can actually see each other at the same time and it's included with our already-pricey unlimited data). Look for Video Share to be available first in Atlanta, Dallas, and San Antonio, with a full rollout on AT&T's 3G network come late July.

Lenny Kravitz! OMG!
You beat me to it. LIKE OMG!
That ain't Lenny Kravitz.
Thats Lenny Kravitz's half-brother Larry Kravitz.
We've had 2 way video in the UK for about 3-4 years (I have it on my phone with the Three network) and in all the years I've had the option to use it I've used it once.
Maybe I'm not the 'video calling' demographic but I don't know anyone that uses it and never seen anyone use it.
Yeah we've had it in Ireland for years now too but no one uses it.And it costs the same as an ordinary call.
I can imagine forgetting that you're video calling and the other end receiving a great picture of your ear.
"with a full rollout AT&T's 3G network come late July"
The heck does that even mean? I think there's a word missing.
Hm, that is a funny looking ad too.
Anyway... yeah. "Video sharing". I'll stick to mms messages until they start keeping the front cameras and make the thing a two-way service.
Video porn poon hounds can now take their “action” mobile, the perves :^P
“text Jenna 69 for LIVE porn action on your phone”
And I'm sure that AT&T is ready to report everything that you do back to the MPAA **just in case** you're sending footage of the latest movie that you're watching on the big screen to a friend. They're probably making sure to record everything you say for federal prosecution **just in case** you're a terrorist.
Sorry, AT&T. You completely lost me as a potential customer ad infinitum.
As someone who participated in the original Cingular survey about video calling, I'd like to stress that I did ask for TWO-WAY calling and that I would only be interested in using it if it was part of my "Unlimted" data plan.
Also, there is a good chance this service can/will be hacked for two-way calling. Look in the imported, unlocked V3XX user's manual, it says that the phone can detect when a video call from another V3XX is coming in and will initiate a two-way call. We'll see....
I guess I just don't understand why they are trying all of this nonsense.
I know a lot of people, and of those people, 0 use services like this. I don't know anyone who knows anyone who uses services like that. Verizon's thing (whatever it's called ... DRM-Cast?) is getting hyped to hell, yet not only do I know 0 people with Verizon, but I don't know anyone who knows anyone who uses V-cast.
Music on a cellphone is so underwelming ...
Video and TV on a cellphone is useless at best, it's a gimmick.
Don't even get me started on GPS navigation for cell phones ... guhh...
Paloooz, sir, there are a lot of people, possibly millions including myself, who ONLY use their phone to get their email, surf, etc. I don't have a laptop, nor an iPod, or anything else - just a phone. I listen to music and lectures on my RAZR and it sounds great with headphones! I watch ripped movies on it ( just watched Return of the Jedi ) and surf where ever using Opera Mini.
I bet there are alot of people who do the same.
that's just ridiculously expensive. especially when you're paying an already hefty sum for unlimited date.
Wonder if the iPhone will be able to do that? The iPhone is 3G right? NOT!!!!
Holy sh*t it's that douchebag hack! If this isn't worth $0.35/min, I don't know what is!!!
Great- only one way? Well, it's cheaper than two-way in other countries, though. I know lots of people who would use it- bedridden patients that want to see overseas family (yeah, you try working an overseas hospital visit into a hectic work schedule- not easy, and videocall is preferable)... if they allow international video calling, that is (to Japan/HK/Europe). If they don't, then this is just a load of hooey that I am not going to take seriously.
To sum it all up-
my complaints are that it's only one-way, and that it might not work internationally.
WTF?!... i can't believe how the US hasn't got 2-way videocalling and only gets it one way now... incredible...
no wonder so many love the iphone... the technology you have there seems about a decade older... just as the one in japan is 10 ahead of europe
Here in the US we only get it one way. It usually requires us to drop our pants and look the other way.
i'm sorry :(
but i'm glad to see that nokia are now pushing more and more smarphones to the US. i don't like the craftsmanship and keys on the N95, but another design with the same function would kick the poop out of the JobsPhone
You don't have videocalling in the US? :-!
I mean... I've had a 3G videocalling-enabled phone since 2004...
They are trying to figure out how they can make us pay through our arses for it. That's the hold up.
You can already do one way video calling if you have a 3G GSM phone, its a bit of a hack but check this out.

Did anyone check out the demo videos on the attshare site? They remind me of the videos we made in school when we were 10. SO BAD.
Sad, very sad. The video is like a horrible "welcome to your PC" video. I'd be embarrassed.
We've had this on Pluto for years now.
Now that we're not a planet, and considered a planetoid, stuff like this seems so insignificant.
Looks sweet, but it wont work 2 way video here in america just yet. According to the FCC regulations they will not allow it here in the states.. Sucks eh? However it's not complatiable for deaf users. However, I do have the next new best thing in the future technology. How about.. . . . HOLOGRAM? how sweet will that be? talking to a person live into a hologram would be even more sweeter!! ( THIS IDEA IS MINE! :) )
That's amazing that America doesn't have video calling already!
I remember mates from school first playing with it on the bus (video calling that is!) about 5-6 years ago when it had just launched in the UK.
Now, a lot of people get video minutes bundled into their monthly contract and don't even use them! Me being one of them people.
What else doesn't America have that Europeans would expect them to have I wonder?!
Oh yeah, you don't have Cadbury's chocolate!! Better than Hershey's any day of the week lol.
