Fiber to the premises (
FTTP), has the potential to deliver the most advanced HD services today, and although it isn't available in most of the country,
Verizon (and others) are bleeding money digging up neighborhoods all over the US to install the magical stuff. Just because you have fiber to your home doesn't mean life is perfect though, there are still plenty of things that can get in the way of your viewing pleasure -- like franchise agreements. Verizon recently announced that they were testing HD VOD in their labs and have an internal time line for launching the service -- that they aren't ready to share. But with their competition already offering this service in some areas they can't wait forever.
I have FiOS internet and phone now. It's great. I plan to upgrade to their TV service this summer to get rid of Comcast. Of all the services I've used, Comcast is by far the worst, besides AOL.
I've been using verizon fios for about 6 months and it's a better experience than cable/dsl ever offered. the speeds are fantastic and it never goes down. it's fast even during peak hours :)
I have service of Fios for two months in Northern New Jersey. I have been very impressed with the level of service from the verizon tech's that have come out to my house. I have 3 HD TV and no VOD for HD, I called Verizon and was told they were working on rolling this out. I wanted to know when as I only have 30 day to try without the $150 cancelltion fee. I was told Marketing wouuld get back, I am still waiting. The TV is awesome & internet is beyond great, my phone never goes down as it did with comcast. We need the HD VOD on demand - NOW.
I too am anti-Comcast(I have my reasons manily the west orange office), so i am glad to wait out Verizon for them to implement all of the additional perks they should have had from the beginning.
HD VOD rollout currently is in progress in the Verizon footprint. Unfortunately it can't be introduced everywhere at once. As the area upgrades are made it will be announced. Look for it to happen very soon.
unfortunately fiber in my area just isn't worth the fuss. Its only advantages (here in central WA) is the potential (potential is the key word here) for faster than cable speeds.. at a exponentially higher price... there arent any decent television providers (and no advantages), and i just woulndt use fiber telephone. SO hopefully verizon steps in with this in my area. Hell, i would even settle for a Cable competitor.. CHARTER SUCKS!
Verizon FiOS is fantastic... For both internet and TV services. Internet speeds are ridiculously fast( 20Mbps down and 5mbps up). Picture is great for TV. The only downside I can say is that the TV menu/guide is rather bland, once that is upgrade(looks like it may be dsoon) then Verizon TV service will be far and ahead of everything else. Coming from Comcast, my total internet/TV bill is cheaper with Verizon.
Adding HD VOD will be a great benefit. They certainly have the bandwidth to do it. Bring on more HD channels while you 're at it!
I'm so glad to hear verizon is expanding it's product offering... sike! :-) How about they get priorities straight and start offering fios in Manhattan!!!! I guess I'm being silly, after all it's only one of the most important markets in the entire country!! Geez.
Funny you should ask, Verizon is busy wiring up my co-op in Midtown for FIOS as I write:)
I would give my left testicle for FOIS here in the midwest.
With all the hype surrounding FIOS, I would have thought HD VOD would have been a given.
I can get the base version of FIOS internet in the Pittsburgh, PA area for the same price as my DSL ($39), but at 5Mbps instead of DSL's 3Mbps. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger.
I've seen FIOS TV, and it is DVD quality (my relative in VA has it) in 480 (never seen the HD). PA, unfortunately, isn't budging on the deal it has with Comcast, so my area still has no FIOS TV. Government officials SUCK.

I wish it were here in Manhattan.
My area of Long Island was one of the first areas in the country to get Fios internet. from what I have heard, the internet is fast, but really nothing special when compared with Cablevision's service. If Verizon REALLY, REALLY wanted to start stealing customers from Cablevision, they need to start lowering their prices. We wont go through the trouble of switching for the same services, just a little faster, for the same price.
I'm from Long Island too and I hope FIOS succeeds. Not because I want it, I am happy with Optimum HD, but because I am sick of their advertising. I almost get daily mail from them, email and now they are starting door to door and let me tell you, I almost needed a brick to get the guy away. I must have told him not interested 6 times. It's almost like he wanted forms in triplicate to approve me NOT wanting it.
I have seen whores less pushy. Err... I mean my friend Bill has seen whores less pushy. yeah that's it.
Yeah, we had someone from Verizon come here as well and discuss how great it is. Though he stretched the truth quite a bit, and made cablevision look worse off than they are, it was different.
I wish they would offer it in Houston. All the new housing being built has fiber for the phone lines but they don't offer speeds any better than dsl. (AT&T is offering some features but not in my area) Between what is available at my home (Windstream or Comcast/former TimeWarner) Comcast is several orders of magnitude better in their internet service.
VZ wants to pull out of NH so I've been using FiOS internet for over a year and still no FiOS TV. =(
I'm on the 29.99/mo 5m/2m plan
yankee i know what you mean. cablevision, unlike other telecoms such as Time Warner in western ny, knows that when a better product is offered its time to upgrade your service as well.
the pricing for optimum online and FIOS is the same, as are the speeds; and that means i wont be switching to FIOS anytime soon unless they offer lower prices than optimum.
with all that said, i do hope buffalo gets wired with FIOS because when I go up there for school I'm forced to deal with worthless roadrunner; a service which is about 4 times slower than optimum online and costs the same.
Very strange, I go to school in Buffalo. I have a RR cable modem up there as well, and it just stinks. Constant drop outs, very slow speeds, it's just not good.
Uhh...I have FIOS internet and Brighthouse Digital Cable. Brighthouse has had HD VOD for at least 18 months, maybe longer.
I actually had FIOS TV for a bit and wasn't awe struck like a lot of you are. I like the FIOS Internet, but for the average app, you'll never notice the speed over a cable modem. (Flame away fan-boys...but you know it to be true)
your comments are valid...I am not awe struck by the their Video services. If you are looking at purely the stats of what FiOS TV offers, pic quality has to be better. From what I see and have compared, FiOS TV does have the best picture quality available. While they are lacking some of the features of many other cable companies. they severely lack in their VOD services in general, their menu/guide is terrible, etc....however, there is a great potential of things to come from FiOS TV.
You also comment that most people will not use FiOS internet to its potential. This is true, most people will not see a difference between normal cable internet and FiOS internet...all truth. But for us techie geeks who browse engadget(and even post) aree going to notice the speed differences.
Anyways, your points are valid, but for those who like to be on the cutting edge, Verizon FiOS is really the only way to go.
Oh yeah. I have FIOS internet mostly to show off the ONT in my garage to my friends! They hear "Fiber" and they think I am George Jetson! I really like the FIOS internet. Not trying to downplay it, just stating a fact.
Here is my beef. Verizon is new to the TV business. I don't want my phone through a cable company nor do I want my TV through a phone company. I had all kinds of tech issues that no one had a clue how to fix. However, once Verizon has some experience under their belt, I see myself going back to FIOS TV if only for the NFL network!
I have been very impressed with the level of service from the verizon tech's that have come out to my house.
I am anti-Comcast(I have my reasons), so i am glad to wait out Verizon for them to implement all of the additional perks they should have had from the beginning
That's awesome news.
Now why don't you freaking deliver it to brooklyn!?
I see your ads every morning, and it hurts me. it hurts me real deep man...
Depends on what part of Brooklyn you're in. If you're in BayRidge, you'll probably get it tomorrow. Now, if you live in Brownsville, you won't see it for ten years. Only the big money neighborhoods get FiOS. It wouldn't bother me so much except I keep seeing that little brat on the TV prattling on about the FiOS spectrum and the cool truck. Damn, they're getting it installed and the old man doesn't even seem to know what it's for. It wouldn't be so bad if I had other choices such as Optimum or something else. All I got is TimeWarner RoadRunner and even premium internet upload speeds suck big time. They've barely increased speeds since I got it five years ago. Damn, everytime I see a Verizon truck in my area I yell at the guy asking when am I getting my FiOS and he drives off at top speed. I'm in Southeast Queens NY and we don't get jack.
Can't wait for HD VoD, so long as pricing is reasonable. I still don't get all the hoopla with Fios internet. Optimum offers 30mb up and 5mb down for $60/month. Not sure Fios can beat that.
- Noga Rosenthal
That depends on area. It's $40 a month for me.
Also, Ultra is coming, eventually...50mbit/s up and down, fiber to the neighborhood, coax to the premises.
Fios internet, and TV are great... and the picture quality awesome. DVR two HD channels at a time, HD VOD would be a great add-on.
I have cable, it has HD VoD, and it's internet service is faster than fios.
What cable company offers over 8mb internet lines?
I have the mid level Fios here and getting 13.5 average down and an always 2mb up.
Cablevision/Optimum. But lately they've been having bandwidth issues.
Are we catching up to the Koreans and Japanese? Where does this put us as far as the international broadband market goes?
We could only hope here in Atlanta. We are basically stuck with sucky Bellsouth/AT&T.
Jesse S, you didnt mention your provider. What is it?
We decided to go over to FIOS when Comcast decided to move Turner Classic Movies from basic cable to the digital realm. Of course, they didn't have to do that. It was a marketing ploy to get us to rent their cable boxes, et. al.
When I called them and said I'd be glad to if they would supply the boxes for free (they said they would for one TV for one year but the others would cost $4/month) my wife and I crunched the FIOS numbers and they actually weren't much more than what we were already paying for Comcast, our regular phone, and our Verizon DSL. So we made the switch.
When I was ready to call Comcast to cancel, one of my coworkers asked me to put it on speakerphone so she could live vicariously (she can't wait to cancel! -g). When their retention department offered to supply their cable boxes for free I said "You should have done that when I asked the first time."
Aside from the clunky TV guide interface (we would love to be able to record programs on their cable DVR box like we do our TiVo: make wishlists, search by date, etc.), it's been a pretty good experience.
I heard a lot of great things coming up with the FiOS, I got the phone and the internet service thus far, but when are they gonna have Fios video in Bayside Queens???!!!
I cant wait!!! I hope Time Warner lets them install it soon, i heard they're not allowing it.
Well... don't count on them allowing it for some time. We have had the infrastructure here for some time and Verizon still can't get by the bureaucracy here. Portland Oregon that is. It's sad that I have to pay twice as much for the same service using Comcast. At least I pay less for Fios internet now and got a 10 times speed boost. With cable you can really only depend on a third of the speed they promise at most times.
I have verizon Fios in the virginia area, and HD-Vod is up and running in the V-cast showcase folder under Verizon, there isnt a ton of content but there are some interesting things and probably there is more to come in the future..So far I am loving Fios service
