Boeing's unmanned A160T Hummingbird helicopter takes flight
It's been a few ticks since we've seen Boeing send an atypical aircraft into the friendly skies, but the firm's latest helicopter has successfully completed a 12-minute test flight without so much as a pilot on board. The A160T Hummingbird unmanned rotorcraft is a turbine-powered "warfighter" that aims to provide "intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance coverage" in locales that could make even the most calloused veteran queasy. During its time in the air, it reportedly met every objective set for it, and while we've no idea how soon this thing will be lifting itself up, it'll eventually reach speeds of up to 140 knots and stay airborne for up to 20 hours before returning to base for a pat on the wing.

Err...pat on the rotor blade?
Man, I'm really picky.
i was actually thinking the same thing. good call.
Me too
Technically, each rotor blade is a wing. They just aren't statically fixed to the aircraft.
yeah yeah I know. Touche, but it still stood out to me.
I think slap on the tail would be more appropriate, although slightly more risque.
Please mount this thing with many, many missiles and make it easy/cheap to operate. The less boys going behind enemy lines, the better....
BentFork is right...every rotor blade is a wing.
I, for one, welcome our new unmanned A160T Hummingbird overlords ...
yawn

Thats one Big RC Helicopter
This will make a wonderful addition to the Skynet arsenal.....
drone drone drone drone!!
"In the year 2029 what was once thought to be impossible became very real....SKYnet achieved consciousness..."
"I'll Be Back"
Don't go slapping missiles on it yet... I live 15 miles from where they're testing that thing. I was surprised enough to find out they have missiles that can be launched and then can fly around, basically killing time, for up to two hours before finally striking their target... and they're testing those out there too.
I don't believe how heartless some people can be. You're basically asking for an easy, cheap way to kill lots of people. Don't you realize that the people a machine like that would be killing have families as well? Or what about all the children that die and whose limbs get blown off in these blasts? Honestly, it saddens me that people can even think like this...
And don't try to pull the 'But they started it!', cause I don't see any COUNTRY invading the states.
Sorry, that was in reply to Mike's comment.
Invade? No, but apparently you managed to forget 9/11. How convenient for you.
It's not like the US military lacks the capacity to kill lots of men, women, and children at a moment's notice, easily, and cheaply. That's been true for decades, this is just a way to protect our soldiers from harm, reducing the total casualties of any conflict.
One must wonder about the moral implications of being able to wage war with no cost other than a monetary one. I mean, the war in Iraq is a perfect example of why we need a draft...what are we going to do when there's no human cost to war?
As much as I'd love everyone holding hands, human beings can't even fathom peace, much less have it.
Being defensively (or offensively) advanced is smart, that's all.
Better them than us? Sounds callous, but it's true. War sucks, but it isn't going away.
@mark: That was exactly why I emphasized 'country'. The united states is invading these countries because terrorists bombed the towers. Doesn't seem very logical to me. I sincerely hope I don't get a reply saying 'Ahh! But those countries are supporting terrorists! therefore they, and all of the citizens within deserve to be bombed to hell!!' Thats not even true to all the countries. Like what did Iraq have to do with 9/11? And they certainly didn't have any weapons of mass destruction...
@Das: For the most part, I agree with you. US soldiers shouldn't be put in harms way, but at the same time I worry about the consequence of waging war without the fear of loss of human life. what would stop the US from invading every country they don't like?
But at the same time, I don't like how there isn't any consideration for the citizens that are being killed by the US military and US military equipment. Sure, I know US citizens care most about US soldiers, and thats alright, but where's the justice in not caring at all for the thousands of families torn apart and the children killed in the country the military is invading?
@coffee: Okay, war sucks... It's generally a bad thing, and we don't want to be in one... so the solution to the problem of war is to bomb them until there's nobody left to oppose us? Does this seem right?
@Salem:
"Okay, war sucks... It's generally a bad thing, and we don't want to be in one... so the solution to the problem of war is to bomb them until there's nobody left to oppose us?"
It's not the solution, it's the objective. I don't know why we don't just park an SSBN in the Gulf and get it over with. Death to America? The Great Satan? Well, here's some fire for your ass from your ol' pal Satan. Women? Children? Yeah, there were none of these on the planes or in the towers.
Another drone in big Brother's arsenal.
They could use some help on the ground from the VIPeR drone.

Can I have a sound recording so that I know when to pee my pants while walking the streets in 10 years?
Helicopters aren't airplanes - they are a bunch of aircraft parts flying in close formation....
How wonderful. Another billion dollar boondoggle.
man, i can't wait to see this mofo in action! blow apart some islamist douchebags! wooohoo
