Dell fesses to more vertical line issues -- offers free replacements
Get 'em while they're hot, Dell's offering up free (labor and parts) replacements for laptop LCD screens with vertical line issues. Owners of Inspiron 6000 and 8600, Latitude D800 and D810, and Precision M60 and M70 machines exhibiting one-pixel wide vertical line(s) are now eligible for a free LCD replacement or cash money refund if Dell already repaired your box sometime in the past. According to Dell, all the affected machines shipped between December 2004 and December 2006. Apparently, this is the same issue already corrected on the 17-inch LCDs shipped with their Inspiron 9200, 9300 and Dell XPS Gen 2 laptops back in April. Your slab not exhibiting the problem? No worries, if it gets ugly in the future, you're still eligible for a replacement within three years of purchase. The issue has been tracked back to one specific component used on a small number of LCDs across Dell's Lineup. Hey Dell, care to share that information with Apple to see if it's the cause of their 17-inch LCD woes? Wouldn't be the first time you two sourced the same OEM panels. This problem is showing up again.
The LCD on my Inspiron 9300 was replaced in May 2007 as part of their recall. Last week (march 2008)the problem started showing up again. I now have 2 lines and expect more to come soon. Dell tells me they will not replace the LCD. They say that, because the problem did not arise within the first 90 days, the part was not faulty.
This looks to me like a fraudulent recall, replacing one faulty part with one that has the *exact same defect*.
Dell is indeed replacing defective lcd's with the exact batch of faulty lcd's it used during manufacturing. There are also "Based on the many blogs and forums on the subject" several Inspiron models affected that Dell is refusing to acknowledge "E1705/9400, etc." Everyone with this problem should file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau at https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx
and make everyone you know aware of this problem and the way Dell is treating some of its customers.
How do you get them to replace the screen? I have the same issue with an Inspiron 6000 that was purchases in Jan '06. However when I call Dell and try to explain the problem I get transferred around like a hot potato. It is just under three years so I am hoping to get this fixed.
I have a same problem with my Inspiron9400 bought in Japan, but Dell won't admit it.
They asked me to pay 90000yen=900usd to replace the LCD.
i have the problem with my 9300, but it didnt show up until this month. first one line, then two then three, now four. the computer is from may of 2005 and dell says to order a new screen for $500 or so. yeah, like i have that cash just laying around.
there are at least 10 other forums out there just like this one and even dell has this posted on their forum. you would think that mike would stand behind the machines he sells, and that they would fix a recalled item like the batteries. they dont want to shell out the money if they dont have to...do they think we are all that stupid?
i had this problem and i replaced it myself to save cost does anyone know if there is a way for me to get my cash money refund thing
i have a xps gen 2
My girlfriend's Inspiron 6000 had this...except it was on a panel used to replace the original that was defective in a different way. By the time the process was done, we had to send the computer back a total of three times and I probably spent 10 hours on the phone with them total.
I will NEVER buy another Dell system again after this debacle.
Have an Inspiron 8500 purchased in late 2003 which has the right-most vertical column lit up in all green.
I had the lines on my inspiron 9600. I took pictures, sent them to Dell with my request for a free replacement. They came out on-site, replaced it for free, and it was as good as new. I was very pleased with the service I received - granted I was still under warranty, although nearing the end of the 3 yr coverage I had paid for.
They're so lame.
I bought a Dell Inspiron E1505/6400 in May 2006 and the screen had a similar problem; however, it wasn't limited to single rows.. it was the whole entire screen and looked almost like a really scrunched up 'video test' screen (like on TV with the colors) repeated for the width of the screen.
Fortunately, they sent a technician to replace the LCD and all and I have yet to have any problems again. I have had problems with other components of the laptop though intermitently.
I don't recommend Dell laptops either, go with HP.
give them a break. they located a problem and now are willing to replace the systems for free. Nobody is perfect, mistakes happen.
yeah, but someone always screams for murder! ;)
And if this was SONY.................................there would millions of articles online about how sony is going down blah blah blah!!! open ur eyes ppl Sony is not the only company which makes mistakes!!
xbox360 has a 70% failure rate :)
Ok warriorwthn, it's obvious you're a Sony fanboy, but posting ridiculous 360 failure claims in an attempt to make Sony sound better add nothing to the comments. No technology is foolproof, and although I'm not a Dell fan I applaud them for standing up for their product.
sony deserves far worse if this happens to vaio notebooks because sony always charges far more for similar products than dell does.
we all know that dell is a wal-mart of compuer world, so you know you might get burnt by buying dell; lousy services + el cheapo products, but sony is "like no other" at least in terms of pricing (maybe, apple is an exception), so it is natural to expect more from sony who does not deliver.
and in Norway, it's up to 5 years, gotta love the Norwegian consumer law :-)
Everyone freaks out and goes crazy when some kind of defect is found on Apple notebooks, but when one is found on a Dell, it just kinds of passes by under the radar.
All of this boils down to Dell backing up their product even if there are issues. But as anyone who's seen Fight Club knows that what matters is the bottom line, if it costs more to fix the problem then to deal with the consequences of NOT fixing the problem then there's no point in a recall. I'm not sure what the exact percentage is that would make the latter outweigh the former but I would think that it wouldn't be anywhere close to 30-50% and definitly no percentage close to 70%. If the 360 failure rate was anywhere near there you would have class action lawsuits left and right.
Yes, I googled that exact phrase before I made the comment, and then after you responded. And yes, it did come back with plenty of hits. The most consistent percentage that I found was 3-5% and 30-50%. The 3-5% sounds reasonable I will admit, and the 30-50% came from an EA insider as well, so that sounds fairly suspect. The EA comment, came from an anonymous source (no good news comes from anonymous sources unfortunately) so a reasonable person should be able to admit that makes it lose some of it's validity. Even if it were true then you also have to take into consideration that EA creates games for both consoles, so there is a good chance that the person who made the comment came from the PS3 development side. If memory serves me correctly the story originally stated that the percentage mention was for development consoles, and those have a higher failure rate due to the more demanding schedule and lack of optimized code (I could be wrong about this though.) Any poll on the web is suspect as well since more angry people will voice their opinion then those who are satisfied. Why do satisfied customers need to comment about something that works well for them? They don't, it's call apathy.
I'm totally cool with that, and I wouldn't have an issue if the US government conducted an investigation into it as well. I'm definitely not against them laying the info out on the table, and if they're responsible for any nefarious actions (beyond the norm, this is MS we're talking about) then they should take full responsibility for their actions and face the consequences.
Is the line there constantly or does it come and go?
So, its not just HP laptops that have been having this problem, then, eh? I have a HP ZD8230us 17" laptop that's exactly 2 years old and today I see it has a single vertical line on the screen all the way from the top to the bottom. Doesn't go away even when I start my laptop in safe mode of Win XP MCE. I googled and found that a lot of people have had the same problem on the ZD8000 series HP laptops, but apparently HP is not taking any responsibility. I don't have any warranty on this laptop. Any suggestions for me?
Yes, some of our Apple 17" PowerBooks are having this exact same issue and Apple isn't even admitting the problem. We can talk about it in Apple Discussions http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=967815 under one thread, but the moment someone posts a link to a website about the problem, like http://www.crosspond.com/apple/hall_of_shame/1 - the topic gets deleted. We cannot afford to be replacing all these screens, and Apple does nothing and admits nothing. Truly disappointing, since one of these machines came fully loaded at around $3K and the other one very well-loaded at $2K.
