Foxconn offering sub-$100 DirectX 10 cards
For those looking for hot, sweaty DirectX 10 action on a shoestring budget, Foxconn has announced a pair of NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS-based graphics cards that should do the trick. The cards will hit stores in a 128MB or 256MB configuration -- both sporting 450MHz / 800MHz core / memory clock speeds -- on an unspecified date for less than $100. That should be the perfect compliment to a basic Vista setup, or a cheap gaming option if you spent all your money on that fancy case.

Holy Crap... just what I need. Frickin' sweet.

Alright, straight dope - is an 8400GS faster than a vanilla 6600? The GS has slow memory, but does the extra 2 generations in the GPU make up for it?
I'm in the market for a DX10 card but have never paid more than $100 for any graphics card (including my 6600).
futurepastnow @ Jun 20th 2007 9:42PM
Maybe...probably not. Benchmarks aren't the best indicators of real world performance, but a quick search shows the 8400GS scoring about a 1600 in 3DMark06, while 6600GT scores range from 1500-1700.
So you probably would see only a little more performance, but you would get some newer technologies. Probably better to buy a 7600GT or save your money for an 8600-series card.

um... or you could just go to newegg.com and get a 8500gt for under $100. Or spend an extra $70 and get an overclocked 8600gts.

Like Jacob said, an EVGA 8500gt is already down to 75 smackers at Newegg. Silly Foxconn, go back to making your Apple cult ceremonial devices.

DDR2? EW! So what if it's DX10 my $48 dollar card can run Vista better than that.

Does it support PureVideo HD and HDCP? If so might not be a bad addition to a budget HTPC.

There is one thing that makes this from being a sweet deal. Foxconn. The hinds end of mobo manufacturers.
andy @ Jun 21st 2007 9:36AM
The only foxconn board I've ever had didn't work. It would lock up because I had 2 hdd AND THEY KNEW OF THE ISSUE WITHOUT DELIVERING A FIX. crazy.

DDR2? booo! i cant wait for some ATI HD2400 or HD2600 cards for that price. but with DDR3. im not dropping $400 on a HD2900. ATI needs to enter some lower end card if it wants to keep up with Nvidia.
paakofi @ Jun 21st 2007 10:46AM
Ye, but can it play doom?
broli @ Jun 21st 2007 2:19PM
I reread that entry 3 times and I don't think I misread it. Why the heck would you buy a frigging low ass 8400GS if 8500 gt's are already offered for under 100 bucks heck you can even find an asus 8600 GT for 99$

Foxconn offering sub-$100 DirectX 10 cards that suck, naturally

The concept of this card for DX10 games is so bad it's not funny. DX10 games are meant to look better than DX9, but to play them on this you will have to turn the graphics so far down it will look much worse than a DX9 game. As it stands right now, not even 2 8800 Ultras can play the DX10 Lost Planet demo at max settings with an average greater than 60 FPS.
