Sony intros VAIO RM1N HD editing workstation

Sony looks to have heeded the calls of those bemoaning the single Core 2 Duo processor powering its otherwise top-end VAIO RM HD editing workstation, as its now taken things all the way up to a Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor in its latest RM1N model. As before, this one boasts a dual-box design, with the main PC components housed in one box, and the optical drives (including a Blu-ray one), hard drives, and memory card reader stuffed in the other. In addition to that new quad-core processor, the RM1N also gets a new NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS graphics card, along with the same 2GB of DDR2 memory and dual 500GB 7200rpm SATA hard drives as before. Also getting a boost is the price, with it now running just shy of $5,000.

Wow.. $5K... doesn't that makes the 8-core Mac Pro a good buy, and the quad-core version a steal?
halfeatenfish @ Jun 20th 2007 4:46PM
ok my bad... 8-core mac pro, same config, except w/x1900xt and no blu-ray is $5100, and 4-core is $4400.
So, not a steal.

Also the Mac doesn't come with a full version of Adobe Premiere Pro installed. Which is around $800 retail. Also this setup has a 1 Terabyte Raid 0 configuration.

Awesome System, finally Sony delivers – Beauty, Style, Performance, and Expensive! This system is for someone who has money and wants the very best. I plan to buy it as a company purchase. We do a lot of audio/video work, so this is perfect. We purchased four VAIO PCs in the past two years, plus four Sony Monitors and have found them very reliable. This system should have been priced at $3,500 though!
Richard @ Jun 20th 2007 7:14PM
How can you find them reliable? Four in two years? My gateway has that track record. Hell, my dad's cheapo does too. Come back down to reality, sony is overpriced. As for style...um it's a computer not a piece of ass. Sony is like a cheap two dollar hooker with fake tits, blond hair, and a shit-ton of makeup. Yeah she may look good from across the street but when you look closely, it's just not worth it.
Nishant @ Jun 21st 2007 9:19PM
richard, maybe he bought four at a time, not one which broke and then another etc.
think before you spew

I want it but I can't afford it. Am I the only who has noticed how far Sony has gone in the computer department? There VAIO computers and laptops are just getting better and better. Expensive too.

It looks nice, seems to be nicely spec'd too... Price tag does hurt, though.
I was a very happy chappy with my S1XP lappy back in the days, and I think Sony comps are great, if pricey.
BitBucket @ Jun 20th 2007 7:36PM
Too bad it can't run Final Cut Pro.

I just got a shuttle SD39P2, a Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2gb Corsair XMS2 RAM, 2 500GB 7200rpm HDDS in raid 0, a geforce 8800GTS 640mb, a dell 2007WFP... for $1600. I'm sure there are some things i'm missing out on here... but form what i can see, only the blu ray drive (atm quite useless), the keyboard and mouse (just using my old logitech MX duo), and the software... most of which i already have.
Way too expensive... unless i'm missing something, which i'm sure i am! plus wit a shuttle, you don't need this dual box thing (which i think is a silly idea anyway... more wires!)
Krono6 @ Jun 20th 2007 9:20PM
I agree.
When will people understand that just because something is more expensive, doesn't make it better?

adobe premeire is not a deal. its not worth $8 much less $800, its a shitty edieitng program. use avid the only real editing software. apple finalcut pro is ok, but its not great, but the the second best next to avid. but final cut is more geared to firsttimers, avid is for people who are more experienced.
adobe is shit though.
coolgu420 @ Jun 20th 2007 10:12PM
also 2 gigs of ram isnt enough, id go with atleast 8 gigs and a faster hdd also that video card sucks for editing, great for agming shitty for film ediiting, you need a good rendering card, go for the vviida quadro fx line
Daran @ Jun 20th 2007 10:28PM
Fucking ripoff.
remedy @ Jun 21st 2007 1:43PM
How can a company that purchase Sonic Foundry's Vegas and Acid Pro and Sound Forge products, turn around sell a HD editing system with an Adobe product? Who's in charge of management here to make such an idiotic decision?
It's like Microsoft selling Xbox360 with a PS3 games for it.

Priced via Newegg.com:
Apple Silver 30" 14ms Widescreen WUXGA Display - $1700
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz - $1000
NVIDIA GeForce 8800XTX 768MB GDDR3 $600
Seagate 500GB SATA Hard Drive x 2 (1.0TB) - $150 x 2 = $300
PHILIPS SATA 2X Speed Blu-ray Burner - $500
Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR2 800 RAM - $300
EVGA NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard - $200
Misc. Parts - $400
Total ~$5000
So, you get A 30" APPLE DISPLAY with around double the performance (including double the RAM), for the same price as this Sony model that comes without a monitor. The only problem is you need to assemble it, but that's what the IT guy is for.
Knowing you got ripped off....priceless.
