Ralph Lauren unveils "touch-sensitive window shopping" in London
Alright, the whole touchscreen thing is getting a little out of hand. In the latest example of touch-frenzy, luxe clothier Ralph Lauren is converting a large window at its London flagship store into a giant touchscreen shopping experience as part of its Wimbledon marketing campaign. Much like Microsoft's Big-Ass Table, the 78-inch window is coated with touch-sensitive foil, and the image is beamed onto it by a hidden projector -- allowing users to purchase Ralph's latest duds and even take in a tennis lesson or two. Purchases are paid for via phone or email the next day -- so you can't explain away that $75 pink polo by saying you accidentally brushed the screen.

good idea about payment. I wouldn't want to type my cc# up there for all to see.

Nice Gimmick, but if you're AT the store why wouldn't you GO IN and shop, rather than have an Online shopping experience in the street outside??
Maybe it's for those of us who hate dealing with the snooty sales assistants? : )

Now correct me if i'm wrong, but why is a jab always thrown in at M$ & never at apple? I thought this site was to report these things, and not be biased on them.

Where is the dig at MS? It just relates the technology to surface, that's all. No dig there.
I checked out the link though- made me chuckle lots- not because of the dig at MS but because of the pointlessness of some implementations of technology.
SpeZek @ Jun 22nd 2007 9:46AM
Gee, last time I checked, this was a blog, not CNN. You can expect bias.
If you want the story without bias, all you have to do is follow the "Read" link.

Hobos of London, Rejoice!
WolfDog @ Jun 22nd 2007 4:37AM
they could intergrate microsoft's surface to the screen to pay just by putting your credit card up to the glass and have your order delivered to your home.

Wasn't a display like this already in the RL store in Chicago - Michigan Avenue? I remember playing around with it this Cristmas... very cool!
ethana2 @ Jun 22nd 2007 4:49AM
I'm always happy to see a new application of concept like this...
But please, don't involve microsoft. With something like this, you need uptime.
Shy @ Jun 22nd 2007 5:29AM
just wait until saturday night wheh some guy tries to see how the touch screen copes with a kick or a bin
AHTB @ Jun 22nd 2007 7:00AM
Hey, that's Boris Becker!
mzamar @ Jun 22nd 2007 8:04AM

Steinr @ Jun 22nd 2007 9:25AM
Love it .... now take this in-store when choosing sizes and express courier delivery and all is well!!!
I think this type of application is awesome, especially when you can see all your past purchases and compare items from you wardrobe but is still a little while off...

I'd be much more excited if Victoria's Secret was getting this.

But, wait-- the future was supposed to be a big ass table available sometime in the future!?! M$, how could you do this to me?
pr3sidentspence @ Jun 22nd 2007 10:59AM
Microsoft's Big-Ass Table does not use a "touch-sensitive foil." It is completely driven by an array of infrared cameras under the glass.
Nit... and... pick.

It's not about microsoft or touch displays.
It's about customer convenience 24 hours a day.
It's about impulse or gift shopping, which represents 75% of retail shopping. (Oh, I forgot about my bride's birthday..)
The window is brilliant since it's "seamless" and allows anyone with a finger to touch and shop without having to be an internet geek.

$75 for a polo? Heh, they're $110 or £55 in the London store!
This is a pretty cool idea, I'll definitely go try it out next time I'm there; the reason you have to confirm payment via phone is because we don't have a Ralph Lauren online store in this country though, rather than anything else.
