SanDisk intros 6, 8GB microSDHC cards, 4GB M2 card

SanDisk has busted out a couple of advances on two memory card fronts today, introducing some 6 and 8GB microSDHC cards, along with a 4GB Memory Stick Micro card (otherwise known as M2). Not one to miss an opportunity to seize the moment, SanDisk's Jeff Kost says that with the new microSDHC cards, "any mobile phone with a compatible microSDHC slot will have just as much storage as the largest-capacity iPhone." Unfortunately, there's no word one what they'll cost just yet, although there's less uncertainty about the 4GB M2 card, which should soon be available for $100.

wow those will be nice. well once they come down in price a little.
-just don't drop it in deep pile shag.
NOBODY MOVE!
LOL. I am assuming this is strider from 1src ;)
I use microSD and luckily it stays in my device. It is way too small to even hold in your hand.
JAmerican
seems useful
how would we know if current devices are microsdhc?
by that i mean ones we own already?
Uh, read up on the standard?
You are on the internet.
So this is the internet? Cool.
WTF Is the internet?!?!
I think he means "teh intarweb". Kthnxsbai

Being a relative computer youngin, I remember my first hard drive as 40mb. (i missed out on the punchcard days)
It blows my mind everytime they cram more and more gigabytes into cards the size of a fingernail.
Yeah yeah, you old timer. I bet your "network" consisted of a bunch of pterodactyls carrying papyrus scrolls.
I remember when we had 8 MB, (yes, MB) Compact flash cards not too many years ago. More than 5 gosh darn floppies on something not much bigger than a postage stamp- and we liked it that way, liked it just fine!

"opportunity to cease the moment"
Do you guys know the definition of cease? to stop; discontinue
How are you getting paid to write articles and you don't know the difference between "cease" and "seize"?
6GB? Has there ever been flash media in a non-binary digit like that before? I've seen them run the gamut all over the place, but never a non-doubled number. 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB (1GB), 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and so on. Has anyone else ever seen a flash card or flash drive that didn't fit this scheme before?
yes. http://www.sandisk.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx?ID=2204
6 and 8Gb !! hey, that's a lot !! you can even store the iPhone OS on that... or maybe not... ;-p
You could fit the entire iPhone contents on the 8GB...
How is it the iPhone worked itself into a SanDisk post?
well in fact you can't, cauze the iPhone doesn't even have a slot for any card :-p
6 and 8gb is great and all, BUT THEY HAVENT EVEN RELEASED THEIR 4GB MICRO SD CARD THAT THEY "ANNOUNCED" MONTHS AGO!
Cmon Sandisk, at this pace you'll be chasing the Iphone 2.0 which will have 16gb.
They have too released their 4GB card, I purchased it from this only store a month ago and it works great in my LG VX-8700.

Once I see the cheap chinese versions on ebay I'll grab mine for $50 shipped or something. For now I'll live with my 1gb microsd from ebay for the $15 shipped I paid.
It won't be long before I'm able to fit my entire 44GB music collection on my cell phone!
You have a 44GB collection? What do you do with that? You should really try to prune that down! :D
I filled my 20 gb portable once. Made it a pain to use and find the songs I actually wanted to listen to.
44GB? Dam...I can't wait until I can fit my, currently, 237GB music library on my phone. On a chip the size of a baby's fingernail no less!
Come Chinese...er...Sandisk!
:D Can't wait for the 8GB!
Flooty333 - I have a 4GB microSDHC. Check ebay.
Hmm why no mini SDHC 8 GB card?
Because they come with an adapter for mini and full SD.
Wow, go SanDisk, I guess. I got my first 1GB microSD card a few weeks back, and was really shocked by how tiny it was. 8GB? That's just showing off.
Somebody asked earlier, but let me rephrase for clarity: what are some of the more common devices that support the SDHC flavor of these cards? I have yet to hear of any.
Sandisk's site has a "compatibility chart" for phones (& I assume other devices). Well, the do for the Nokia N95.
I imagine there are other sources, but I can say it's always a bit iffy. Companies won't always say how big the cards can get & still be compatible w/ their products. Nokia is notorious for this (they'll say 1gb max, but 2 works fine).

As for the release in general: I can understand some things having pre-release announcements (cars, for example), but memory cards? I think that's a stretch. Why not just release the thing.
The new Sprint Mogul PPC-6800 pda phone has the microSDHC slot.

My N95 will love that 8gb card:)
XDA Developers have gotten microSDHC cards working in the Hermes.
Will this work for deviced that support microSD? Or is mircoSDHC totally different? They look similar, wordering if these would fit into blackberrys with microSD slots...
If your device doesn't read the 4GB Micro, or the 8GB; just have the firmware updates installed. I bought a 4 GB Mini SD Card, and my VX9800 couldn't read it. I went to a Verizon Wireless Store, and had the updates installed. It costed me nothing.
most devices are NOT SHDC compatible
in the US at least
it sucks
i've heard reports of people getting them to work on non sdhc compatible devices though!
search google for it!
i have a ppc-6700 and mine only has minisd (which is not obsolete replaced by microsd im guessing)
but, i bought a miniSDHC 4.0 gb card and it works in my phone
what i had to do was put it into a card reader in my laptop
reformat it
then put it in my phone
i have over 3 gigs of music / GPS igo maps on it
it works fine
that is me though
i've heard others that havne't had the same results
Heya Surge, thanks for your tips. I have a Verizon Wireless XV6700 and I have two 2gb MicroSD cards ... I got a 4gb MicroSDHC card today and I tried the re-formatting trick. It didn't work for me :-/ I was disappointed but did some more searching around and found this post: http://discussion.wmexperts.com/showthread.php?t=152257
I used the .cab file in the first post and it works! I can read my new 4gb MicroSDHC card (formatted for FAT32) and I can still read my original 2gb MicroSD cards. I just wanted to let people know what worked for me, in case re-formatting didn't work for them too.
what's the access time on these things?
...and to think I was just marveling about how awesome 2gb of music on my phone is.
I have a nice collection of mini-SD cards for my old phone, but the new one takes micro-SD, rendering them almost useless. I mean, who looked at a mini-SD and thought, hey, thats nice, but sheesh, its huge, what I need is storage I can accidently inhale! I can't eject my micro card without it shooting halfway across the room. There's a point at which miniturisation ceases to be useful. Or cute.
When will the 8GB Micro SD Card be available for purchase, and how much?
Do the math by the end of year 2008 we will have 16 or more Gigs in SD,Mini or MicroSD cards..... who knows.... But i look at it this way = Grab four MicroSD cards and put them on top of a SD Card and you will see that SD are at least 4 times bigger than MicroSD using same SPECS from MicroSD it will be easy to make a 32GB SD Card dont u think??????????
For those with a Samsung i730 that only reads and writes in SD, can we buy a 6GB or 8GB MicroSDHC Card and get an SD adapter to get it to work in our device? Thanks.
