Apple lays down iPhone purchase rules -- max 2 per person
Apple just got all official with their retail sales for the iPhone. Read it, know it:- All 164 Apple retail stores will close at 2pm and reopen at 6pm until midnight on the 29th.
- 2 iPhone's per person max.
- First come, first serve basis.
- Free iPhone training workshops will begin Saturday morning at all Apple retail stores.
- Apple's online store will also begin taking orders at 6pm PDT on the 29th. Free shipping.
- So you don't get caught out making a disappointing trip, Apple is also providing an on-line tool to check the iPhone availability at your local Apple store. Good thing, we think you're going to need it.

let the anti iPhone hate begin.
yeah geeks always come into forums and start hating on tech and star trek like shows. wish i could be cool like that. I mean honeslty anyone who has a life doesnt care about your opinions, who are you that your opinion actually matters..no one!
Meh... i want an iFone that is a phone first.
Agreed. With all the hype about the iPhone, has anyone checked to see if it actually works as a phone? Or is this all just a bunch of crap?
I live in Australia and have a mac but will REALLY be happy when all this iphone rubbish is over with. Half the websites I used to go to for tech info are innundated with nothing but iphone this and iphone that.
You know the rest of the world does have more to do than read about iphones. give it a rest already.
thanks.
Major applauses to you!!!
Uhm... STFU and throw another shrimp on the barbie, eh?
Yeah, I thought so...
Better yet, skip the iPhone stories you aren't interested in (just flick that finger over your scroll wheel, you can do it!), and get your Aussie browse on by reading about robotic Koalas instead:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/28/kobie-the-fondling-robot-to-the-gods/
Regarding the deluge of iPhone stories, how about giving the "give it a rest" comments a, um, rest? If there's bigger news out in the tech world (like the aforementioned robotic Koalas), go find it and enjoy. Quit cluttering my tubes with the incessant whining.
"Will be close", "first come first serve" -- are fifth-graders writing your morning posts?
Don't forget "iPhone's" as a plural of "iPhone".
yeah, their "grammer" is bad :)
Fifth-graders are much smarter than that, just saying!
I shall take zero.
Fix the keyboard.
And re-instate the missing industrial standard features.
Uh huh, oh and fix all that other stuff that I know must be wrong even though I've never even see one of these things in real life let alone used it. GET ON IT, STEVE!
With "industrial standard" I assume you're talking about industry-standards, right?
What's there to fix about the keyboard? It's not broken. It's just awkward and some people may not like it.
I don't like it, but I know it's me. I don't assume something's broken just because it doesn't fit my own personal taste.
Thats cool, was expecting a one per person rule, though Im sure getting two will be frowned upon by people behind you in line.
That's fantastic, a phone with an interface so confusing that you need workshops to learn how to use it. I guess it really must be running OSX.
Please just use the iPhone Free feed and shut the hell up.
Apple cares about their user's experience and holds free workshops for them to learn or have questions answered. Much better than an animated paperclip.
@Nick,
My mum, dad, aunt, sister, boss, friend, girlfriend, girlfriend's friend, old guy down the street etc., all never need to attend a workshop to learn how to use a PC, much less a phone!
Are Macs that difficult to use?
@Jon, it's not that they just automatically know how to use them, it's that the manufacturers of those machines just don't give a damn if they do or don't. Apple wants their users to get the most out of their purchase, and to spread the word that Macs ARE easy to use, and that Apple provides great service. Way to be intentionally obtuse, though.
*facepalm*
By offering the workshops, Apple kind of accepts the kind of people who buy their things.. If anyone needs a workshop to learn how to use that phone, they don't deserve to live...
But then again, most of the ones who DON'T need the workshops know apple for what they really have to offer and choose other things...
cheers!
"This message brought to you by Microsoft" - 7of7
Wish I could block this troll on Engadget like I did long ago on Digg...
@7of7
What does that "I guess it really must be running OSX" comment mean? Are you saying OS X is difficult to use? Coming from what standpoint, a 3 year old used to his Elmo laptop OS? How are you using ANY operating system then?
@Jon
I'm sure they know how to turn the PC on. Then what? Most users don't know jack about the potential of their machine. Most PC users I know don't know what it can do or how to do it. Yes, they can turn the PC and get IE up and running, but what else? You'd be amazed at how often I, a Mac user, am asked by PC users to help with whatever problem they're having or how to get something done.
Apple wants it's users to get the maximum out of their machine, even if it is very simple for you and I to figure out. They just assume (correctly) that most people don't understand computers as well as you and I. Why buy a computer with a DVD burner if you're not going to burn DVDs? A built in camera? Etc?
last time i check innovation means something different and new, so that would require a learning curve, i actually respect a company that strive for innovation in their products and take the time to teach about the new features
"2 iPhone's per person max."
whose so desperate to go for 2 iphone's at once!!!
Charity dude that's waiting outside in NYC :)
A married couple. (/me refrains from making some kinda 'if you had a girlfriend' comment)
You've OBVIOUSLY never dealt with a 100% spouse tax.
"whose so desperate to go for 2 iphone's at once!!!"
Steve Jobs worshippers
To stop those people from throwing them on ebay.
Well, two iPhones equals one Sony SE or Nokia.
I kind of want to know what the heck to they need to close for 4 hours, to prep for a phone launch? I know Cingular/AT&T does not close for hours when they first get in the new smartphone?
cuz they want to.
Apple stores will give out free coolaid to their apple store employees laced with X to deal with irate customers.
Actually, AT&T IS closing early and re-opening @ 6PM just like the Apple stores....
Who camps out for a Curve?
Where did that image come from? It looks like Office has replaced Notes...and before YouTube was announced.
I was wondering what other people thought that was. It looks like we (well, those that are getting an iPhone; I'm too poor right now) might be able to at least view Office documents, which would be good for the college student in class downloading and viewing notes or presentations or the business professional that is on his way to the office and needs to review stuff before his meeting. It would sure make it better than my HP iPAQ.
No MMS, no 3G, no browser flash, no camera flash, no auto-focus, no voice dialing, no replacable battery, no A2DP, no video recording, no mp3 ringtones, no ichat, no copy and paste, no keyboard, no GPS...
"evening calls" are after 9PM not 7PM, no downloading, no streaming, activation charge, no iPod without activation, two year contract...
Anyone know when the Samsung F700 is coming out?
>
MMS will likely be added in a software update.
And I'm glad it doesn't have 3G. Do you know how long the Blackjack battery lasts? Not very long, which is why Samsung gives you TWO batteries in the box. I have an 8525 (3G) and a BB Pearl and I almost exclusively use the Pearl unless I have Wifi access. The Pearl lasts a long time, and believe it or not, the page load times on the Pearl are almost as fast as the 8525 (this is an issue with latency, not speed). I will gladly sacrifice a small amount of speed if it means the iPhone will last longer than the Blackjack or 8525.
Unlike TMobile or Verizon, AT&T does give you the option to have your nights start early, it's just a little extra. Every single company has an activation fee when you activate new service, and who cares if you can't download music. Seriously, who wants to pay $2.50 per song like on the Sprint Music store? And no streaming? What do you call Youtube?
Sprint store is $0.99 a song and you can download directly to your phone. I believe the above post of $2.50 is incorrect.
SSNPGuerrilla, how do you know that Apple will add MMS? It doesn't exist now and that's a simple fact. Frankly, the lack of iChat, ringtones, and SDK are the big software concerns. Omitting MMS is just an insult though one many of us are used to dealing with.
Regarding the Blackjack and 3G, the Blackjack has two different battery sizes and the larger one offers good battery life. 3G can also be disabled in the Blackjack (though I believe it's an unpublished hack). There's no reason that a device couldn't offer such a feature just like they offer the ability to disable WiFi. My Nokia offered exactly that. Only a fanboy would claim that the lack of 3G is a feature.
this is going to be like the ps3 probably... lots of hype and people standing in line and paying too much on ebay etc... and in 1 month they'll be trying to give them away...
There are only 34 states listed on the iPhone availability page. Apparently cheese heads aren't good enough for iPhones. Sucks to be them.
Funny, cause I swear I saw an article about a new Apple Store in Bayshore at 6pm on Friday.
Yeah the Grand Opening is 6pm on friday.. and is supposedly only open till 10pm. And, like the synopsis said, iPhone stores are supposed to be open till midnight. Odd that they wont have iPhones considering Bayshore is supposed to be a higher end mall. At least wisconsin residents have summerfest to look forward to.
Nice.. 6/10 of the 'Breaking News' and 'Featured Stories' on the right are dedicated to the iPhone. They might as well change their name to EngadgiPhone.
EngadgiPhone! Ohh Burn! You sure showed Ryan with that one.
I am now dealing with the 100% spouse tax. I will be buying 2 iPhones tommorrow, & probably be snarled at by the people standing behind me.
Ridicolous the Ipony, ridicolous this policy, ridicolous Engadget for pulling out this non-news.
Thanks for the input Yoda
Ouch, that gotta hurt for Scott Bourne. He is trying to get 24 iphones... lol.
Thanks Apple, without your help I was worried that I may drop more than the $1200 that two would cost for a phone that isn't even impressive.
Poor Ganesha.
WHY GO TO STREET`S LINES?
"Pricing and Availability:

www.apple.com/retail."
Free delivery, by the way...
cuz then you dont have to wait 3-7 days for it to be in your hands.
What big difference!!!3 to 7 days late...
Early adopters no means Early birds!!!
To be the 1st or not to be the 1st, that`s the question!!!!
Will you be able to get engraving from the Apple online store, like you can with iPods?
Crap. We're driving three hours to the nearest Apple store Saturday to get our iMac fixed, and it didn't click with me until this morning that it's going to be a zoo there this weekend. Hopefully those trainings don't make it worse.
Your mac is broken? I thought that never happened.
I feel ya on this one. My wife's Powerbook crapped out on the plane to Chicago a few years ago. We hit the Apple Store to try and see if we could get it looked at, and it turns out that was the night of 10.3's release...
Hey, I use a Mac at work for video editing and wanted FCP at home too. I'm a Mac power user, but I'm NO fanboy. I'm no fan of Windows anymore, but don't even accuse me of being a fanboy! :) I have a 1st gen Shuffle and a almost-3 year old iMac that worked fine until the capacitor plague problem surfaced this spring, and since they did the warranty repair it overheats and goes to sleep a minute or two after you turn it on. While I like Apple, their products, and the way they handle service (ie, actually having competent people in the retail stores), I just wish they'd open mini-Apple stores in some of the midsize cities too. Would definitely convert more people around here if the nearest stores weren't 3 hours away in Phoenix or San Diego.
the igod will finally release his blessings
lol!
No 3G?
No thanks.
Too Sloooooow
"Unlike TMobile or Verizon, AT&T does give you the option to have your nights start early, it's just a little extra."
Can't comment on TMobile because I don't have them, but Verizon does allow you to start your nights and weekends early, it's just a little extra.
everyone that is hating is just plain jealous that they don't have the $600 bucks to fork over for an iPhone...
-No 3G? That's why I have a BlackJack with HSDPA and tethering capabilities.
-Odd Keyboard? Have you ever used an HTC Phone (8525 on AT&T)? All phone keyboards take a while to get used to.
-AT&T as an inferior network? They offer more dB per square mile than any other carrier. This is based upon no scientific research whatsoever, rather on my own person experience with AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. I currently have AT&T and Verizon and, with my BlackJack, I generally get twice the service than with my 6700.
you can come and see my iPhone if you'd like (to eliminate the confounding variable of all the lights, shine, and smiles in that Apple store), as I'll be first in line.
your not the first inline, someone already has that medal...
the iphone is touted as the device to combine your other devices, why would i want to carry around two phones so i can have 3g? Its stupid on apples part not to include it
Im not sure what you mean "all phone keyboards" but the 8525 has a sliding out keyboard, "all touch screen" keyboards have sucked thus far, thats the reason HTC includes the standard keyboard, its for user feedback
and your "unscientific" is about as good as shoe size = manhood...go read a consumer reports, they will tell you why ATT sucks
The iPhone has become the Paris Hilton of tech news.
that was kinda funny when i saw it a day or two ago in another iPhone story.
Ow...Burny
And I should be ashamed of not having kept up with comments on iPhone threads? yeah. Ow. Wah.
Ungh, that's it.
People, seriously. Shut up about the iPhone not being news. All the time, you see stuff like laptops and little MP3 players from Korea or Japan that'll never come over into North America, and yet nobody complains about those, no.
Personally, I am not going to be getting an iPhone. Hell, I pretty much hate almost all Mobile Phones. They are pretty good for when like, there is an emergency. but... Anything else? 'Oh hay I'm in Zellars, totally blocking up the line while on the Phone talking to you hahah' Yeah, everything else about them I don't like.
Last I checked, Engadget did make a portal that has no iPhone news. Use it instead of complaining about it. It's not like you pay this place to read all of the tech stuff, do you? Gheez.
Why 6:00 PM local time on a Friday night? To cynically capitalize on the local TV news angle.
Most local news occurs at 6:00PM local time in each market, and Friday is usually a slow news day. They can get massive amounts of FREE advertising. It's a good bet that most markets will have a reporter or even a Live shot of the local store showing all the i(insert derogatory word or phrase here) eagerly waiting their turn.
Of course, the obvious response will be ad hominem attacks and adamant denials from the Apple drones, but that's par for the course.
It's called marketing, you retard.
Looks like 'Freddo' don't know the meaning of ad hominem or lots of other Big words – typical mentality of a 5 year old.
Trainging classes? Are the iSheep really so stupid as to need classes on how to use a phone? Shouldn't iJesus be so intuitive as to make classes irrelevant?
lmao.. iJesus.. seriously.. i disagree with people saying 'oh they want the users that buy their products to get the most out of it'.. baloney.. training classes for a phone? when's the last time they had training classes for anything? i know when i got my (insert any product in the last 10 years here) i didn't need classes for it.
if you haven't figured it out.. the classes are catering to the technologically retarded who try to use technology as best as they can but still just dont get it. If you ever worked in a tech services area you would know that no matter how easy something is to use the idiots always find a way to not grasp the obvious.
I do agree, I work as a tech support person for a small, independent gas company that spends more money than they should on technology. I have people coming in to ask where their Verizon AirCard goes in their laptop. I guess i just got all heated in the moment because this iPhone thing is starting to get to me. Another case in point would be my parents, who don't know anything more than checking e-mail and using eBay. I guess I am so used to getting something, not even looking at the book/manual, toying with it for hours on end.
FYI, just called my local Apple store to inquire about whether they'd have any units out for inspection/tinkering prior to closing up at 2pm Friday - nope.
I'm digging on the phone itself, but I'm really hating the way Apple/AT&T are handling things right now. It seems like they're trying to milk that hype machine for all its worth.
What's so hard about having some units in the stores a few days ahead, so people can go try them out and decide for sure whether they want one or not? They're expecting tons of people to simply buy the phone blind (or relatively so, massive intertubes coverage notwithstanding), and arranging things so that that is precisely what happens. Meh.
As far as the training thing goes - it's optional, haters. Apple offers optional training classes for lots of their products.
I just dont get it...since when did it become bad for a company to offer free training classes to its customers?
If this overpriced semi-smart-phone is so successful that they need to limit 2 per person then I am moving to Canada. What happened to us America?
There's no apostrophe in "iPhone's." That's all.
That is all crap... the punctuation (or lack of punctuation) depends on the situation, i.e. if one meant "two iPhones" or "the iPhone's multitouch technology" for instance. When you try to teach grammar it's best to use clear and concise sentences for instruction.
Apple has made a huge strategic mistake limiting the iPhone to AT&T. Despite the money they must be getting from AT&T they are losing millions of sales. I for one, would have been buying one tomorrow but I'm not even considering switching to AT&T.
hehe had my first iPhone dream last night, Old Steve was in NZ for some reason teaching english at my school (WTF?) and i was like can I see it? and he pulled it out, then I asked if I could have a Go with it, He let me then told me I shouldn't use iTunes, Videos, Calls, or SMS's, but I opened the Youtube and there was the normal favourites plus some porn, I was like LOL STEVE YOU SCUMBAG. Then I went home with the device still in my hand lol no intention of givn it back
LOL. Wow that has to be one of the funniest things I've read about the iPhone all week. One question, how do you use iTunes on the iPhone? haha
If you looko at the iPhone Availablility you will notice that they only update that info at night. So if you check it out before heading to the store you still may not get one.
Keyboard seems to be working VERY well according to the few that have used it. Sure, it will take some time for the old timers to get used to a non-tactile keyset, but that's only a the old people, or people still trying to use crackberries.
Yea the "new" people will no doubt love walking down the street keeping their eyes on that visual voicemail and visual-dependent keyboard until they walk straight into an iPole...can't wait myself to see it on America's funniest home videos!
HYPE! das da name o'dat itune
in recognizing the short life of competitive advantage over substance which may easily be reverse engineered in half a day, apple turned to form, impossible to engineer in forward or reverse, and requiring no brains; Only two designers, a distribution channel, one salesman pied piper to lead the immature, and one monstrous mother of a flotilla of HYPE.
oh, yeah, and a bank account.

AT&T will provide notice that it intends to take any of the above actions, and you may terminate the agreement. Off-net Usage: If your minutes of use (including unlimited services) on other carrier networks (“off-net usage”) during any two consecutive months exceed your off-net usage allowance, AT&T may, at its option, terminate your service, deny your continued use of other carriers’ coverage, or change your plan to one imposing usage charges for off-net usage. Rollover Minutes: Rollover Minutes accumulate and expire through 12 rolling bill periods. Bill Period 1 (activation) unused Anytime Minutes will not carry over. Bill Period 2 unused Anytime Minutes will begin to carry over. Rollover Minutes accumulated starting with Bill Period 2 will expire each bill period as they reach a 12 bill period age. Rollover Minutes will also expire immediately upon default or if customer changes to a non-Rollover plan. If you change plans (including the formation of a FamilyTalk plan), or if an existing subscriber joins your existing FamilyTalk plan, any accumulated Rollover Minutes in excess of your new plan or the primary FamilyTalk line’s included Anytime Minutes will expire. Charges will be based on the location of the site receiving and transmitting service and not the location of the subscriber. Data plans include BroadBandConnect access (where available in metropolitan markets) when activated on a compatible, eligible 3G device (subject to availability). There are 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte. Overage is billed by the kilobyte. Service charges paid in advance for annual Services are nonrefundable. Additional taxes and surcharges may apply. See AT&T Nation® map at store or www.att.com for default voice coverage area. If you request voice blocking or your selected data plan restricts voice access, all voice calling capabilities (except for outgoing calls from the device to 911 or 611) will be blocked, including without limitation, calls from 911 or 611 to the device. If you have a voice plan, voice calls are billed as provided in your voice rate plan. Roaming: Roaming charges for data or voice service may be charged with some plans when outside the AT&T network. Display on your device will not indicate whether you will incur roaming charges. Services originated or received while outside your plan's included coverage area are subject to roaming charges. Use of Services when roaming is dependent upon roaming carrier's support of applicable network technology and functionality. Check with roaming carriers individually for support and coverage details. Billing for domestic and international roaming usage may be delayed up to three billing cycles due to reporting between carriers. International Roaming: See www.AT&T.com/AT&Tworld for more information and for a list of currently available countries and carriers. Compatible international-capable handheld required. Certain countries and/or carriers within a roaming zone may be unavailable with certain plans or Services while roaming. Availability, quality of coverage and Services while roaming are not guaranteed. Rates apply to AT&T customers only. Certain tenure, billing and credit restrictions and additional charges may apply. You may cancel your service, for any reason and without incurring the Early Termination Fee, within thirty (30) days of signing your Wireless Service Agreement, PROVIDED, however, that if you cancel service you will remain responsible for any service fees and charges incurred. If you cancel within three (3) days of signing your Wireless Service Agreement, you will be entitled to a refund of your activation fee, if any. If you exercise this option, you may be required to return devices and associated accessories purchased in connection with your Wireless Service Agreement. Service Availability and Access/Coverage: AT&T does not guarantee availability of network. AT&T reserves the right to restrict the use of the Direct Bill service or terminate the account of anyone who seeks refunds on improper grounds or otherwise abuses the DirectBill service. WI-FI CONNECT: Wi-Fi Connect available only with activation of an eligible DataConnect plan. Compatible Wi-Fi device with installation of AT&T Communication Manager software required to access AT&T Wi-Fi service. Wi-Fi Connect plans allow unlimited access (except as noted below) to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots. Customers must pay applicable Wi-Fi access service fees directly to the Wi-Fi service provider for non-AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot usage. This agreement also can be viewed at www.AT&T.com/laptopconnect. Wireless 802.11b/g network interface card or a laptop/PDA enabled with 802.11 technology is required to access the Wi-Fi Service. Wi-Fi Service is not inherently secure. AT&T Wi-Fi Service is not part of the AT&T GSMTM /GPRS, EDGE or 3G networks and, therefore, does not have the encryption, authentication or other security features that may be available on those networks. Wireless communications can be intercepted by equipment and software designed for that purpose. AT&T strongly encourages and supports certain customer-provided security solutions, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), but does not provide these to its Wi-Fi users and is not responsible for their effectiveness. Wi-Fi Service is available only when it is within the operating range of the AT&T system or of an operator with which we have a roaming agreement. Wi-Fi Service access location lists and/or maps may be updated from time to time; actual service coverage, locations and quality may vary. To ensure that the Wi-Fi Service is not being used fraudulently, AT&T limits your usage of the Wi-Fi Service to 150 uses per month. If you do not use the AT&T Communication Manager software to connect to an AT&T network for 90 consecutive days, or if your license to use the software is otherwise terminated, you will not be able to access the Wi-Fi Service. Wi-Fi services requiring the use of credit card or other payment directly to the network provider are not part of AT&T's preferred network, if any, and additional charges will apply from the owner of such network.

POOLED DATA CONNECT PLANS: Available only to customers with a qualified AT&T Wireless business or government agreement ("Business Agreement") and their respective Corporate Responsibility Users ("CRUs"). Consolidated billing is required. WIN Advantage® may also be required. Customer's CRUs may activate service on the Pooled Data Connect Plans described in this brochure ("Pooled Plans"). Within a single Foundation Account (FAN), Customer's CRUs on an eligible Pooled Plan aggregate or "pool" their included data usage ("Included Usage"), creating a "Pool". To pool together, each CRU in the Pool must subscribe to a Pooled Data Connect Plan that has the same amount of Included Usage and the same Additional Kilobyte charge ("Similar Pooled Plan"). Every billing cycle, each CRU first uses his or her Included Usage. If a CRU does not use all his or her Included Usage it creates an underage in the amount of unused kilobytes ("Under Usage"). If a CRU uses more than his or her Included Usage it creates an overage with respect to kilobytes of data usage ("Over Usage"). The Pool's Under Usage kilobytes and Over Usage kilobytes are then aggregated respectively and compared. If the aggregate Under Usage kilobytes exceed the aggregate Over Usage kilobytes, then no CRU in the Pool pays Additional Kilobyte charges. If the aggregate Over Usage kilobytes exceeds the aggregate Under Usage kilobytes, then the ratio of Under Usage kilobytes to Over Usage kilobytes is applied to the data usage of each CRU in the Pool with Overage Usage, resulting in a monetary credit against the corresponding Additional Kilobyte charges. For example, if a Pool has 900 Under Usage kilobytes and 1000 Over Usage kilobytes (90%), then each CRU with Over Usage will receive a credit equal to 90% of his or her Additional Kilobyte charges. CRUs changing price points or migrating to Pooled Plans during a bill cycle may result in one-time prorations or other minor impacts to the credit calculation. Credits will only appear on WIN Advantage®. Customer may have more than one Pool within a FAN provided that Customer may only have one Pool for Similar Pooled Plans within a FAN; however, an individual CRU can only be in one Pool at a time. AT&T reserves the right to limit the number of CRUs in a Pool due to business needs and system limitations. CRUs on Pooled Plans and CRUs participating in a legacy Pooled Data Connect plan pool created prior to February 17, 2006 ("Legacy Pool") cannot be in the same Pool but can be within the same FAN. End users on non-pooling AT&T plans may be included in the same FAN as CRUs on pooled plans; however these non-pooling end users will not receive the pooling benefits or contribute Included Usage to a pool.
