iPhones are arriving at stores, being unpacked
Prospective iPhone line standers hoping to start the wave when the FedEx truck rolls up are gonna have to come up with some other plan for glory -- looks like iPhones have already started arriving at Apple and AT&T stores, which we can confirm with multiple sources at various retail spots. Even though El Jobso banned cameras from the backrooms of iPhone outlets, an overzealous employee just posted some pics in the MacRumors forum of an iPhone in just such a spot. Too bad Sunshine McBrilliant included his obvious wrist tattoo in a couple of these pics -- maybe he can list "blurry cameraphone photography" on his resume when he starts looking for a new job tomorrow.

Ew I wouldn't want his scrappy hands on my iphone. I hope he does get fired.
I thought these had to be activated before they would function?
I don't know if this has been asked before... but how many colors are on that screen. It must be 16 mil., correct?
Christ I'll be glad when tomorrow is over and all the fanboys become jaded from buying a $600 paperweight!
Yep. iPhones are of no use whatsoever. You can't even make calls with them! I heard they have a 1bit display (only 16 colours!)
The reception on them is so terrible because you can't even pull the antenna out! Do they even have antennas??!!
I heard from my friend who knows a guy whos friend has an iPod that you can't even play WMA on the iPhone!
Let me just grab my iPhone so I can cut and paste your reply.....
....wait
....the iPhone can't cut and paste. ROFL! Why not leave out the battery too?
You're right! All I do on my phone all day long is cut copy paste cut copy paste! I _never_ use it to make phone calls or just surf the internets. Where's the fun in that? If I can't cut copy or paste all day, then I get next to nothing done.
I heard from my buddy's friend that you can't even cut copy or paste on a Macintosh either! I guess this is like the 1 button mouse that I heard all the Macs come with. If I can't right click then I can't do anything at all!!!
The thing that really gets me about the iPhone is that I heard one time on an article my friends dad read that you have to put a quarter into the iPhone in order to make a phone call. I think it sends the money to AT&T through EDGE but I can't imagine that would work very well ... I mean ... EDGE being so SLOW and everything.
EDGE is just so slow that it's useless. You can't even use the internet, someone told me so I know. My moms cousins boss owns an AT&T store and she said that the iPhone weighs about 2.5lbs. Probably from all those quarters still waiting to be sent!
Shouldn't you be camped outside the Apple store?
Why would I camp outside a store for a $600 paperweight?
Uh.. Windows Mobile cannot cut and paste...
WM2003SE has the ability to cut and paste. I haven't used WM5 or WM6 so can't comment on that.
If MS removed that feature, they're shooting themselves in the foot as well.
Cut/Copy/Paste are features that are almost ubiquitous with Computers/PDAs. Even a Palm Pilot 1000 can Cut and Paste!
"Sunshine McBrilliant" just made my day.
Damn right
WOOOO IFlood!
haha idiot
LOL, tattoo is now photoshopped out of the pic.
Yeah, for anonymity. But, I just realized that in the photo of the iPhone showing the Macrumors page with the pictures you can see the tattoo on his/her hand.
looks like the tattoo has been photoshoped out of the picture. but if you click the old thread on macrumors.com, its there.
idiots i say...
AT&T store employees have the option to buy one phone for the retail price before the launch or so I am told. These will be hot little items for a long time. Just like the iPod these will be a success.
Ooh. 7 Apple-related posts on the main page right now. Great job Engadget. You guys should post more Apple news.
(Waiting in line at AT&T store. Writing this on a MacBook Pro. Waiting for the iPhone!)
*whew* oh man I was getting worried for a second. I thought I might have to go on without another iPhone post.
Oh thankyou Engadget you saved me. I don't know what I would have done.
umm... you probably would have kept your retarted comments to your self for starters. Outside of that I really dont think any one here cares.
Who cares what anyone else says? You made me laugh out loud Drakin.
I would wadger a guess that ALL of the people making legit posts and that are bad mouthing the complainers care. You're obviously easy to please if that post made you laugh out loud. My you should try the funnies in your local newspaper for such future comedy.
@andr3w
I'm sorry...Did you mean Retarded?
@andr3w
Sorry I need to correct your spelling again.
It's "wager" not "wadger"
Monkeyman
if anyone could do that, i would pay close to 1000.00
i think your wrong, it's true that the carriers can't do something to you if you unlock a phone, but they can prevent you from doing it, and by no means they are forced to unlock any phone.
Hmmm.... so every 'most commented on (seven days)' story, save one, is about the iPhone. The rogue loner? 'How would you change WM6?', and by golly if the iPhone didn't get brought up in that thread within three posts. it's kind of nice to have Apple in such a spotlight. I am hoping to just pick one up as soon as I can without the fanfare.
Dude seriously why does everyone have to continue to bitch that engadget is covering the iPhone? They catered to the haters as much as possible. This is a GADGET website. The iPhone is easily the biggest news in gadget-try(???), whether it does well or not. People are excited about it, so they're covering it. Deal.
Monkeyman,
Unfortunatly, with Cingular you have to wait 3 months, then MAYBE they'll do it. But now that iPhone is only with AT&T and exclusively, they will not provide you...i doubt they would...
thats just me
Hey Engadget, I heard that the iPhone has a built in speaker, QUICK We need another news story FAST!
Are my comments not showing up?
Anyway here is the link to his pics including his face, unedited
http://s180.photobucket.com/albums/x17/dropdime2/
So this is why my agent was telling that other girl that everyone can't be a hand model. That hand looks super deformed. $10 says: picture-taker's dad is also his uncle. Heck 50 dollars says his new step-dad is also his grandpa :p.
lol, they retouched the pictures in the macrumors article, but the guy's originals are still up on photobucket, as seen here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=321258
Sunshine McBrilliant needs a permanent photoshop job on his wrist - weak tattoo.
You did not know? Candlestick tattoos are all the rage.
Monkeyman - I do not believe the iPhone can be unlocked. There is no way (save cracking the unit open) to insert a SIM chip into this phone so it has to be built in. b/c of this, i do not think there is a point in cracking it (b/c you won't be able to insert a tmobile chip in its place). Perhaps it is this design decision that AT&T was okay with not having their branding on the phone because it couldn't hop networks. Another point - does this phone even use a SIM chip? Did they find a work-around to the SIM chip with this phone? I mean, afterall, the SIM chip simply contains data in a special form-factor.
Another thing - maybe i'm just out of the loop - but did anyone's attention perk up when during the activation demo, a person has the option to have two iPhones on a single individual plan? Does that mean two phones on 1 line? aka my current GSM phone - can it be used simultaneously with the iPhone? I'm probably reading too much into it. (yes, i know if you hacked a gsm chip, it can technically already be done - i'm talking about being able to do it legally)
@andr3w: that's "retarded" I believe you were attempting to spell.
It is refreshing to see Apple break the mold of the cell phone as we've known it, opening windows for more market-defying, style-defining phones that draw attention to the full potential of a mobile device. Yet, to truly experience the content, entertainment and communications of the Mobile Web, consumers might find themselves hamstrung by the same limitations of the iPhone's predecessors. The availability of a sophisticated, innovative interface - voice, text, touch - holds the key to truly making the concept of 'elegant simplicity' a reality, something consumers have come to expect and gravitate toward when experiencing their mobile devices.
You must be lysine dependent and had to eat some of Steve Jobs' poop to come up with that.
What's an "iPhone" ??
It's like a LG, SonyEricsson or Nokia, just crappier.
@dLeet
There is a SIM Slot at the top of the iPhone. Its not built in.
Bones & Drakin, If you were able to read it well enough to know it was misspelled, then it was plenty legible for an online forum post.
FWI, he is a she. And yeah, she's going to be "jobsless" real soon.
FYI, she is a he. There's a face shot out there. Scroll up and check the posted links.
remeber when the razr v3 came out.like 300 some dollars.now its a piece of dung that they are giving away.this I phone hype is major BS. 499 dollars. what a joke. these things are obsolete before they even hit the streets. overpriced crap for some coporate greedmonger to make even more money than they allready have.
boo hoo
You don't like corporate greed? Better leave the states. Capitalism is what this country is built on.
can you buy an iphone without getting a contract?
The formula for an iPhone post's comments:
1. heh! Meh firstz post!!1!
2. Well, the iPhone sucks anyways and I am sick of hearing about it and other phones are cooler.
3. Go use the iPhone-less feed, dumbass.
4. [other phones] do stuff this phone doesn't do, and even though I don't use any of those features ever, this phone sucks cos it doesn't have them.
5. Busines people will not buy this phone.
6. you are all a bunch of dumbass trolls, skip the post if you don't like it
7. Apple will introduce a bunch of features in a software update, you'll see
8. I hate anyone who likes Apple products
9. What's an iPhone?
10. The Nokia N95, which I won't bother to say is only $150 more, has a better camera, and I don't have one of those either.
11. It's 'business', not 'busines' you nitwit
12. You Steve Jobs worshipers drink the kool-aid, anyone who likes Apple must be a sheep, and anyone who likes Windows couldn't possibly be (-?-)
13. I can't get laid, so I'll make some objectifying comment about any female I see in a picture on here
14. a smartass comment that I cut and paste on every single iPhone article
15. haha, you can't cut and paste, losers - I have to grasp onto anything I can to put you people down
16. I am observant, so I must inform the world that the guy in line in NY is overweight
17. I'm going to call commenters retarded, which is an insult to the more-intelligent people who actually are
18. A repeat of a comment that's already been made
19. Well all you apple people said the zune sucked, so I wanna say something Apple sucks.
20. If you all hate it so much, why do you keep reading it and posting on it?
21. because we don't iCare. ha! See how clever I am? I made it an insult by using a lowercase 'i'.
22. But it doesn't have this feature that I want, so I won't be buying one.
23. um, okay, good for you.
24. I need attention; I am not going to buy one until it is gen 2 or 3. And I'm going to say something about my iPod.
(repeat until it gets to like 100 posts, then start all over on the next iPhone article which should be posted by then).
Hey thanks! I was running out of things to auto-post.
Damn, I forgot some... it's sad that thunderstorms have reduced me to this...
25. Since the iPhone's service plan starts nighttime minutes at 9 pm like every other plan, it sucks.
26. I can't afford it, so therefore it's too expensive.
27. it's inconceivable that anyone could say anything good about it because they actually like it. if they say they like it, they're wrong.
27a. Inconceivable!!! :)
28. something or other about 'apple apologists'
29. [troll who posts on every single iPhone article]
30. I can't be bothered to read. Does it do (whatever feature is explicitly stated in the article)?
31. I predict that it will fail because everyone will run in horror at the non-swappable battery, because everyone I know carries 2-3 batteries on them and changes them constantly
32. 3g blah blah blah
33. I won't pay $xxxx for two years of service, even though if I looked at my current cell phone bill I probably already am (if not more)
34. newtons failed, haha!
35. Activation fee? just because every company does this (even if it's 'waived' as part of a 'deal'), I am outraged that it is somehow not different from every other freaking cell phone you'd ever buy.
36. touchscreens suck, because I don't like them.
37. I can't actually be happy for anyone else who's happy and who makes a decision for themselves. I must tell them how wrong they are to want something I don't want, how dumb they are for being different than me.
In other news the iPhone gave birth to a new baby boy.
I am sportin a full 3 inches of Asian wood right now
Did anyone else notice that the wire to the earbuds are transluscent (or see thru for you 8 year olds)
I though that too initially, however Its actually white, it only appears translucent in the photo. If you look at the enlarged version from the source site, you can see it is just a shadow.
aww now my sarcasm is not amusing to me anymore. But thanks for pointing that out. But I think I need my eyes checked because it doesnt look white to me. Oh well this comment was pointless then since I dont really care anymore. *Sigh* now I have to get my ODU uniform ready for JROTC. This uniform is really cool.
*end of worthless waste of space*
Jeez, sounds like a lot of people aren't happy with their zunes. Oh, wait, pfff, nevermind...
The iphone will either be the greatest phone ever or a big flop. I'm not getting one but my crazy friend Vania is in on the action. Last I heard from her she was camping out and first in line. She's doing a daily video blog about and so far she looks like she's losing it. You can watch her get it here: http://www.amazingcointrick.com/vania
Sunshine McBrilliant works at the San Leandro, Calif. AT&T outlet, and is seen here with the pre-activated demo which will be used tomorrow to familiarize all of the store's employees with it. Be sure to come and say hi! If she still works there, that is.
AAHHHHHHH!!!
I DON'T CARE!!!!! WHOO-HOO, the thing showed up at stores. Wow, that's news.
FYI - I own a mac, can be quoted as a "mac fanboy", but damn, who cares...
First of all, why the hell would you WANT to use T-Mobile? Okay, over AT&T and Cingular they seem much better, but... T-Mobile, dude... =(
Second, don't worry, with the iPhones popularity there'll be a lot of hardware hacking going on, give it about half a year and the iPhone will be unlockable by everyone and their mothers.
iPhone users are glued to their devices…everywhere there is an iPhone to be found, there are at least a handful of people looking over the owner’s shoulder to see how it works. go2, a mobile, local search engine, has more than 350 mobile websites that have been enhanced for use over AT&T’s EDGE network, simplifying use and providing a dynamic experience. go2 sites are full screen, flashy and simple to navigate, with many single-click applications. With stylish looks and an ease of use, go2’s network of mobile sites (which includes go2 Movies, go2 Dining, go2 Golf and go2 Colleges) are quickly becoming a popular destination for iPhone users.
