iPhone splayed for your pleasure
Fanboys, look away. Haters prepare to drool as the iPhone gets splayed to the bone. It wasn't us, honest. This is the work of the evil doers over at the curiously named ifixit.com. Click on for the full carnage. It seems to be a work in progress so we'll just have to wait and see whose silicon is really inside.

For a minute there, i lost myself
Mitch Cerroni @ Jun 30th 2007 1:05AM
This is the most exciting part of the new Apple product experience. I bet the battery will be easy to replace like the current ipods.
brendan Sheehan jnr @ Jun 29th 2007 8:32PM
Always wondered why this site isn't called 'ibreakit'.
kingofwale @ Jun 29th 2007 8:05PM
I think the obvious question is: Is it easy to replace the battery..
second question is... how long does the battery last.
and final question (and the most important one): Is it worth the 600 dollars price tag? the interior does look very cheap. Early reports say it costs apple 280 to produce. what a bunch of greedy #@$#$
Logik @ Jun 29th 2007 8:13PM
Have you seen any other phones' interiors? I mean, what were you expecting, bling and ice?
kingofwale @ Jun 29th 2007 8:17PM
>Have you seen any other phones' interiors? I mean, what were you expecting, bling and ice?
with a phone costing 599 + two years contract, is it really outragous to expect a little bling and ice? ;)
Flippy @ Jun 29th 2007 8:19PM
I was kinda hopin' there would just be a picture of an apple with "SUCKAZ!" written underneath.
Chuck Wrona @ Jun 29th 2007 8:39PM
600 bucks is nothing.
Go home and get your shine box.
nik @ Jun 30th 2007 1:12AM
I doubt it cost 280 to manufacture, if anything apple might be taking a hit on each unit sold and making it up in their deal with AT&T, from app deals and general control of the damn thing. I am sure that they would have liked to have seen it out in the market at $300 and that they aren't just grabbing what they can on a high retail price
Matt @ Jun 29th 2007 8:15PM
Even if it cost Apple $2 to actually produce each one, they've probably spent millions in research and development designing the iPhone. Once they make that money back and components are cheaper, the price will likely drop -- I'd say at least 20-30%
Tiffany @ Jun 29th 2007 8:18PM
Link appears to be down, but I wonder if they found a removable sim card in there.
artifex @ Jun 29th 2007 8:22PM
yes, the phones have SIMs. The guide tells all.
Gregory Kimball @ Jun 29th 2007 8:19PM
The iPhone doesn't have a battery. It's powered by the excess glee produced by its owner.
texasranger @ Jun 30th 2007 4:33AM
I rofled a little at your comment. I'd say its a combination of smug and glee.
Desmond @ Jun 29th 2007 8:21PM
I think we killed there website.
Neptune5 @ Jun 29th 2007 8:24PM
(Link appears to be down, but I wonder if they found a removable sim card in there.)
the Sim Tray is At the top near the sleep button you swop out sims with a paper clip, now it's just about asking AT&T to unlock it
A Gupta @ Jun 29th 2007 11:35PM
I bet after a few weeks (months?) some dedicated hackers will have figured out how to unlock the iPhone. Probably code junkies in Europe or Asia who will have (somehow) imported one. That'd be my guess.
Mr. Vage @ Jun 29th 2007 11:44PM
Of course, it'll be pretty useless to have an unlocked phone considering many of the features of the iPhone are provided exclusively by AT&T. That's why the plans cost so much, there were a lot of back-end changes that had to be made to work with the iPhone (e.g. Visual Voicemail).
Neptune5 @ Jun 30th 2007 1:45AM
Don't care about voice mail period, i know AT&T unlock all of their other phones if you ask them, im gonna call and ask if they will unlock it for me
geezer @ Jun 29th 2007 8:24PM
does it already contain a 3G Chip?
Robin @ Jun 29th 2007 8:25PM
Yeah, I think their site is down.
I've tried a few times and my browser brings me the unfortunate unable to load page message.
But, I'm definitely curious to watch their video/pictures.
Robin.
yoda16 @ Jun 29th 2007 8:32PM
thats great
SinzenStudios @ Jun 29th 2007 8:39PM
The best thing about this is when we all start reading reports that people are ripping out the drives from their ipods and dropping into the iPhone. Instant 30-80GB worth of storage. Burn an image of the OS on the iPhone and drop it on the drive. All said and done. Soon, it shall happen soon.
Michael @ Jun 29th 2007 8:44PM
Except for the fact that the iPhone uses flash that is likely soldered to the motherboard.
Jawad @ Jun 30th 2007 7:36AM
could someone please send me the instructions to take apart the iphone. When i get one i want to take it apart & try somethings.
JSForbes @ Jun 29th 2007 8:43PM
Why would a hard drive fit in a space designed for Flash?
My first thought: That's a big battery
Marcus Adolfsson @ Jun 29th 2007 8:44PM
We took an iPhone apart as well - with some more part shots. Video coming soon.

I want one to impress the ladiez.
I.M. Yerpappy @ Jun 29th 2007 10:55PM
Get real. I doubt your pindick is gonna imprezz any ladiez even if you were covered in iPhonez.
Todd @ Jun 29th 2007 9:06PM
Yeah but does it blend?
Ryan @ Jun 30th 2007 6:12AM
They should have tried to put a T-Mobile sims card in it and see if it worked. Hey, maybe engadget could try that.
Eric @ Jun 29th 2007 9:32PM
I don't see why they couldn't have a user replaceable battery when the battery sits right behind the back case.
Their excuse was that it was impossible to engineer a replaceable battery, otherwise it wouldn't be so thin. Apple either has some pretty lame engineers or there is some kind of conspiracy...
paul34 @ Jun 29th 2007 9:39PM
Exactly - why use a replaceable battery when you can just force people to get the iPhone2 in about two years? ;-)
People aren't smart enough to know about replacing batteries when they die. Same with most PC users... they usually declare an entire computer dead after they've infested it with some spyware.
tekdroid @ Jun 30th 2007 1:04AM
Welcome to Apple, Inc, where battery replacement is never to be spoken of.
Please be kind enough to never discuss the real world with our iPhone engineers, sub-contractors and manufacturing partners.
Please accessories your iPhone. Please call us when the 500 charges are up, conveniently outside warranty.
Henry @ Jun 29th 2007 9:36PM
I was hoping someone would have taken one apart by now for the world to see. Curiosity drives people to incredible lengths.
Andrew H. @ Jun 29th 2007 11:21PM
seriously... this is bordering on insanity

Oh, the horror!!
XSportSeeker @ Jun 30th 2007 12:14AM
Wait a couple of days and the exact same thing will be done to it's OS.
Homebrew anyone?
Alex Padilla @ Jun 30th 2007 12:30AM
It looks like the SIM has a 3G logo on it.
But that's just me.
hoeun kim @ Jun 30th 2007 4:53AM
this is so humorous.... i really dont understand the mentality of people who defend iphone although deep down, they know that it's piece of shit. my nokia n80, which was released 2 years ago, still has more features and capabilities than this 600 dollar marketing success... i really need to invest in apple's stocks, they really know how to make money. ill stick to my "old tech" n80, and keep myself away from the iphone, the revolutionary iphone.
ps. i will be quite entertained as time passes and iphone lemmings realize, they are locked into 2 year contract with 5 year old technology that they paid 600 for.... hahahhahaha....
pss. iphone trolls, weep... and burn... weep and burn. hahaha
psss. dont think im an ms troll either, im typing this on my mac book pro.
