definitive interface gallery we did? Awesome if you want to find your way around the
iPhone -- but it doesn't really do much to show off the fit and polish of the UI. So we compiled a group of our favorite bits of UI elegance on the new device; be sure to download in HD for the full experience.

Those transition animations are hawt!
I hope that newer mobile phones will implement sweet transitions from now on.
Mile @ Jun 30th 2007 4:46PM
Looks cool but I can't help but notice all the times he tried to do something and it didn't happen. No big deal when you get a new toy but after a few hours/days when you actually start using it and realize that you have to repeat your 'commands' it's going to start to suck.
The Chickening @ Jun 30th 2007 4:58PM
Good observation, I figured people would point this out. But he's hitting the screen with the side of his index finger which is not the best way to do it. The think has been around for less than 24 hours, and has a learning curve, just like all new cell phones. Go to an Apple store and mess around with one, try it yourself!
Benny @ Jul 1st 2007 1:07PM
I agree but i do just think it's the nature of the video. If I were using it I'd probably hold it witth both hands and use my thumbs, which I would assume to be much more effective. He's using the side of a single finger to try and be unobtrusive to the video and I think that's why he misses so much.
humpty @ Jun 30th 2007 4:49PM
1: Why does it not register your touch/testure 100% of the time? A button press press is 100% accurate.
2: How are you suppose to use this with one hand? You cant do the same gestures AND hold it at the same time with one hand. For example, people are killing themselves driving with phones now.. now they will have no hands on the wheel? (dont tell me voice commands) There are other times when you only have one hand available.
jaapV @ Jun 30th 2007 4:50PM
Wow, the trashcan opens and closes. Nice transitions don't make sense if you don't have a big screen to flaunt it, which 'most' cellphones don't have.
Without kidding, the interface is great, very nice effects, a lot of fun to just play with I think.
But, I still don't think it makes sense surfing the internet on such a small screen. RSS I get, but the internet is not only tickertape news items.
Mark @ Jun 30th 2007 4:51PM
I know I'm gonna get flamed and voted low for this but those transitions look exactly the same as on the Zune... except without the cool fading in/out effect.
Nando @ Jun 30th 2007 4:55PM
FlaaaaaaaAAAaaaammmeeee!!!!! Roooaarrr! Angry!!111! lol
The Chickening @ Jun 30th 2007 4:55PM
And you know where Zune got it? OSX.
Dinraj @ Jun 30th 2007 6:27PM
Zune got it from the Media Center-which exists since 2002. Now go back to your iPod or iPhone or iWhatever and let iRational people talk here.
Mr Scruff @ Jun 30th 2007 8:32PM
Mac OS X was announced in 2000 and released in 2001.
Also, iRational just reads as 'irrational' making your joke rather lame.

One word: Owned.
Mickey Jones @ Jun 30th 2007 5:03PM
This thing is making Windows Mobile look like a sun-bleached turd. I'm getting sucked into the hype vortex. Throw me a line before I do something rash like spend $600 to get v.1 hardware and AT&T service.
Sowande @ Jun 30th 2007 5:30PM
Let me help you out:
- Can't select more than one email at a time to delete; can't create subfolders
- Can't copy and paste
- No A2DP stereo bluetooth action
- Data Plan can only be used with iPhone (I can't switch to another phone and use my data plan)
- No directory browsing or storage; e.g., save as
- No customizeable ringtones (yet?)
- Can't tell whether caps lock or not
- Minimal language support
- Can't select text
- ATT has the most amazing hidden fees so if you're not familiar, good luck
- ATT customer service is hit or miss, usually miss and very rude
- Service is very spotty
I went and bought one just in case I thought it might be fun but I don't like it and I'm taking it back. It's not for me. I demand too much of my phones.
IFF it had cost me 200 bucks, I would keep it because it's really *neat*, but it's the chicken noodle soup of phones. If it comes down in price and ATT loosens up on the data plans so I can use any data plan with it AND my other smartphone, I'll reconsider.
Karen Schachter @ Jun 30th 2007 5:11PM
please tell me how long at&t sucks has an exclusive for? what did they pay? why oh why (else!)?
CWeed @ Jun 30th 2007 5:12PM
Might want to do some blurring with that video, you give away your IMEI and ICCID in the about screen...
thebruce @ Jul 1st 2007 4:25AM
Nice IMEI.
Paris K @ Jun 30th 2007 5:36PM
Hmmmm, I never really got into the hype but seeing this makes me want one. Come Octrober when my contract ends I'll be getting one(hopefully 3G in Europe and hopefully for free with a new contract).
Fraser Drew @ Jun 30th 2007 5:54PM
There is a reason for these effects... and that is Core Animation!!
It will be all over leopard!
Ender78 @ Jun 30th 2007 5:59PM
It would be really nice to hear the different built in ringtones for those of us in Canada who can't walk into a store and play with one.
Chris Flynn @ Jun 30th 2007 6:04PM
Awesome Vid. Best yet..
Constable Odo @ Jun 30th 2007 6:05PM
I can understand if you've tried the iPhone and don't like it. It's just those people that never touched or used it and say it TOTALLY sucks based on pure specs don't make any sense at all. Supposedly high cost and all, this iPhone is a work in progress. Some say it's a beta, but I doubt that. There are going to be a lot of "so-called" suckers purchasing iPhones but I'm still sure they'll enjoy using them and as software features are added on they'll enjoy them even more. Still, I can understand why hard-core tech users see no use for the iPhone since it's not as feature rich as some Windows Mobile phones.
Chris Flynn @ Jun 30th 2007 6:28PM
I think the window of opportunity to destroy the iPhone has passed. The overwhelming consensus is that 'it's actually pretty damm cool. L
Yeah there's a few gripes, few silly ommisions but all in all it's damm fine. All in all the promise was kept.
Perhaps maybe a few people are thinking 'better keep it up - release an update pretty soon to keep the faith but all the badness and bitching now serves no purpose other than to seem petty and purile.
Now it's down to Microsoft to come up with their version to keep the pot on the boil and to give those who will, for whatever reason, never accept Apple's 'zen' like tech a piece of sexy portable tech of their very own. They've already shown they've got a little pizzaz of their own with that table affair- if they can just get that shrunk into something that'll fit int hte trunk of your car I think Apple could have some real competition on their hands...
dansus @ Jun 30th 2007 6:09PM
Whoa, that rocks. Want the Euro 3G though.
sam bartle @ Jul 5th 2007 4:51PM
Theres nothing there to impress as far as i can see from this..
I use a windows mobile TyTN and my screen registers everything first time.. apps load faster (well they actually dont of course.. but since theres no flashy (but ultimatly pointless) animations to play they appear to load faster.
The number of times he had to repeat swipes and presses on the screen would be enough to annoy me within the first day or so that id stop using it.. its a phone/pda.. its a tool to get me through the day.. if it fails twice its too often..
t-bone @ Jun 30th 2007 6:25PM
I noticed from playing with it in the store that the weather "slides" always slightly overshoot their resting point and move back into place. It is a little useless detail but it is things like that that I really appreciate.
Doug @ Jun 30th 2007 6:49PM
I noticed the lack of response to many commands too. I hope that's just an anomoly from the angle he's using the phone.
The iPhone is slick and cool and all, but I still don't believe it is going to have significant market penetration. It will never work for me, for example. I have to have real-time syncing of email, contacts, and appointments with an Exchange server, which the iPhone doesn't have. (Pretty important in the corporate world, which is where the most money is spent on phones.) I also need to use my phone as a modem when I'm travelling, which the iPhone won't do. And I have several custom apps that I need to run, which the iPhone (currently) isn't capable of. I'd also really like to have some games on mine for when I get bored waiting in line somewhere. Not to mention that it won't play any of my music. I know with those requirements I'm not among the majority, but I believe they are serious limitations that are going to limit how many people are going to want to fork over the asking price. Especially when the device that does meet my needs cost 25% of what the iPhone does.
Considering how many iPhones are going unsold on eBay, it doesn't seem like demand may be what Apple and the media had hoped.
May be cool for some, but I don't think it's going to have mass appeal.
Chris @ Jul 4th 2007 3:37PM
"Considering how many iPhones are going unsold on eBay, it doesn't seem like demand may be what Apple and the media had hoped."
Maybe people realize they can get it faster and at the same price or less from the store...and with more trust?

I don't care what anyone says about this phone, it TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!! This is THE phone of the 21st century and I've gotta have one!
Wolfticket @ Jun 30th 2007 7:23PM
Hurrah, on screen effects. T|hey still amaze me after about 2 weeks, they don't annoy me with momentary pauses after everything I do so just so some programmer can have a graphicsgasm(©2007) and I don't switch them off as soon as I install windows.
Man I'm in a bad mood. Anyways... My humble opinion is that all the big cell manufacturers (nokia, sony ericson et al) are currently in a room somewhere working out a way to kick apple into touch, and when they work something out apple will have no chance. Even for iPPle being anything other than a niche product in such a big, crowded market is going to be hard.
James Ollier @ Jun 30th 2007 8:48PM

Yet no demo of the phone?

I just have to say this... guys, good stuff. More than anything else, its really nice to have a website who's videos are playable on the device their reviewing. The [Mp4] Download in wide VGA (30 MB) link plays like a champ on the iPhone. It was a hoot. Good job. Aside from Apple's website, this is effectively the second website I've been to with decent foresight in making multiple formats available.
Michael @ Jul 1st 2007 12:55AM
You really just have to play with it, thanks for the video I watched it on my iPhone (well the .mp4 version). Just so that others know, i was really hesitant to buy one because of EDGE and viewing Safari on the iPhone, but it works really well. Im impressed... Seriously, better than my Treo 750wx
matttX @ Jul 1st 2007 5:16AM
Not having to get rid of those 2 kidneys to buy it. I could talk into it instead of talking into my ipod.
TheiPhoneGuy @ Jul 2nd 2007 2:19AM
Here at engadget is like they dont believe in "having healthy an clean looking nails"
Is like wherever they show a product and a hand is featured it looks dirty or the cuticles are all over the place YUCK.
There should be a LAW to prevent the exposure of nasty dirty looking nails..
By the way the video rocks and the iphone while limited is awesome
i forward all my email (personal and business) to my mac account for now
thats until exchange support comes...
Herman @ Jul 5th 2007 11:39AM
That video shows mostly reasons not to buy the damn thing, and spends way to much time on stuff that I wouldn't even care about like pageflipping and scrolling up if there's nothing there.
It has some fancy transitions, but it also shows the controls are flaky.
