iPhone doesn't work with most 3rd party headphones
As several tipsters have pointed out, the recessed iPhone headphone port means that a lot of third party headphones don't work properly: we've tested a few models already (you can see the current list after the break), but maybe you can help us out and let us know which models work / don't work in the comments -- and yes, if you have to press down on the jack to get both channels to play sound, we count that as not working. You'll need to buy a $10 headphone adapter if you want most third party headphones to function correctly, which sounds like a great business plan to us: just break an important device function, and sell the solution for fun and profit. For now, one of the few third party 'phones that do work are the Zune headphones.
Do Work
• iPod headphones
• Zune headphones (despite the tension in the air, the Zune's headphones do work on the iPhone)
• Etymotic ER6i
Don't work
• Shure E4c
• Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro
• Sony MDR-V150
• Generic wrap-around headphones
• Grado SR80

I got some nice panasonics a week ago and I love em. I tried plugging them into the iphone to see how the quality was and they simply don't fit. It's the little things like that that really steer me away from the iphone.
Phew! Luckily I got Etymotic ER6Is, they are working just fine. What happens when I get a call? Do I just have to use the speakerphone or do I have to unplug my headphones first?
The Sony PSP headset works fine (even the mic). But the PSP headset is pretty damn ugly. I suppose the Apple headset could be used w/ the PSP as well.
HEADPHONES THAT DO NOT WORK WITH iPHONE:
Shure E2C (damn it!)
Grado SR-80
It's nuts this didn't ship with A2DP, but I love my 8gb iPhone all the same. Battery life rocks, too.
Apple's In-Ear headphones work perfectly.
Didn't Steve promote a standard 3.5mm plug as a feature during his keynote? IE, the other phones all have a 2.5mm plug that doesn't allow you to plug in regular headphones, while we did it the right way and have a standard 3.5mm plug. What happened to that?
Contrary to the post, I found an easy way to get the Shure e4c headphones to work. I simply took an exacto knife and cut away about 1/8" of the rubber/plastic connector. It exposes more of the gold connector underneath and does not appear to adversely affect the stability of the connector. The gold connector underneath exactly fits in the recessed iPhone connector. I would speculate that the same hack could be done for many other sets of headphones without harm.
Thanks Jonathon. I was hoping that would be the case with the E4c's - mine are at Shure right now due to a wonky connection in the left earbud, but I'm going to do exactly the same operation once I get them back.
i stood in line for nothing. my i-phone wont activate and i have a 770 credit score and im gold. today is sunday and there is no customer service. not that they are any help when there. apple and at&t bad combo! good luck.

The connector on my ER-6i's doesn't look like the one in the picture, mine has the wires perpendicular to the plug.
Confirmed my Ety ER6 to work. Fantastic headphones, I must say. My Shure E2C's are barely too wide. I'm going to hunt down my brother to see if his ER4Ps work.
I have a pair of Shure E4cs and I just shaved off a minimal amount of the sheath. barely noticeable, and comes off cleanly with an Exacto knif or sharp scissors. Works perfectly now. Now I can return this stupid Belkin adapter I bought that sticks out 3 inches...
Can someone please give me the iphone headphone port hole dimensions. Not the size of the headphone jack.. please please Scott
The same thing happened when I wanted to plug some headphones into my palm TX.
Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones do NOT fit without an adapter.
I am very sad/pissed off to report that the Etymotic ER4Ps do NOT work!!!
All of my playing over the weekend was using the speaker phone. I found that out this morning on my way to work.
I just got V-MODA's VIBE Duo earphones from the Apple Store. They're made for the iPhone. So far so good.
Sandpapering of the plastic is safer and more even than shaving. Wrap a piece of tape around the metal plug so you don't accidentally sand the metal like I did on my XtremeMac FS1's (still works fine). No one wants to have to do this, but come on, spending money on a tiny losable adapter that makes the elegant iPhone look clunky...no thanks.
I think its designed this way to be protected from erosion. If the connecting metal was flush to the case it would be eating away the gold finnish to the inside of your pants.
altec lansing im716 headphones don't work.
hmmm, just bought the Etymotics that are supposed to fit. They don't even come close to fitting. Don't buy them.
The Creative HN-700 noise-cancelling headphones has a removable cord which upper end plug is as small as Apples headphone plugs. Simply turn the cord upside down and voilà! it should fit the iPhone.
Note: I haven't tried it, but since the size matches ordinary Apple headphones, it will fit.
Some Etymotic ER6i headphones do fit. Some don't. Apparently the WHITE Etymotic ER6i models have the slip iPhone compatible jacks -- my black ones do not fit.
Frankly, I don't totally understand recessing the jack to support fragile inside connections. Beef them up. But if you have to, include the adapaper on your very expensive phone so people, who have very nice expensive headphones don't get very angry at you.
Also, for me (a mass transit rider) I have no choice but to use 3rd party headphones. Listening to anything on the San Francisco Bay Area's light rail (BART) is nearly impossible without headphones like the Shure e5s and their siblings...
Oh... and while I'm at it... if you're going to screw over people who have 3rd party headphones, at least have the decency to have the adapters available. I can't find any information on when the belkin will ship and apple is saying 2-4 weeks for theirs.
Shure Model: E2C-N Sound-Isolating Earphones do NOT work with iPhone.
It would be nice to see a complete list updated, without having to go through all the comments.
Well I have the Zune premium headphones and it did not fit but if you CAREFULLY cut away the rubber plastic part around the plug, there is a harder plastic plug undrneath that plugs in just fine and does not compromise the headset in any way. The Zune premium headphones are way way better than the standard iPod headphones and at $40 they are a steal. Thanks for the idea and the post!
