iPhone not supported under 64-bit Windows XP or Vista -- oops
Struggling with your new iPhone on a 64-bit Windows Vista or XP system? Take solace, you're not alone. The error message, "The software required for iPhone is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again." is Apple's magical way of telling you that iTunes is not supported on 64-bit flavors of Microsoft's operating systems. Yeah, we agree, they should have listed the incompatibility on the iPhone specs page under Windows System Requirements. Unfortunately for those of you new to Apple software, it's buried in support article 301301 which states, "iTunes is currently not supported in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition or any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista." Now you know.
Update: Apple's official (read: the non-marketing document which no one reads) iPhone: Minimum system requirements document does say that "64-bit editions of Windows are not supported." Go ahead, try to find it in the small print, we'll wait...
[Thanks, Rishard and Andy G.]

ahh..bloatware...iPhone with its OSx is 700mb compare with what less than 64mb for WM6....
I just cannot believe that the WINDOWS users of the world would, as much as they state they hate them, use or buy ANY Apple product! If all the products that WINDOWS makes are ssssooooooo much better, than stop buying and crying about the Apple products... stay in your own little world and let everyone else do as they please. I am one of very few people in the world that have used BOTH platforms in professional forms. I say this because almost every post I read is from some close-minded Apple/Windows user. That being said... the Apple is far more USER FRIENDLY than any PC I have ever worked on! Most PC users will defend the crashes and viriuses till their death. I know for a fact that they have NEVER EVER worked on a Mac other than their friends or at a school, and will never do so because of MASS appeal. I just wish that everyone that opens their traps on any blog/forum, would be schooled in both operating systems and make a knowledgeable opinion. If you believe what you read and not have any knowledge about it first hand....SHUT UP! Both sides have this problem and those of you who make these observations are making yourselves and the rest of the PC/Mac users look as STUPID as you. Shut up and get back to being brainwashed.
Hey petarted i do believe the only on who mentioned anything about switching was first a "mac lifestylist" who suggested that everyone switch to mac.
and PC is an acronym for personal computer. guess what any mac falls under that category. this is one thing i have never really understood. if compair please us names of os you are comparing. People call then selfs name for a reason you should actually use the name given.
@clickmyface:
You're an idiot. Where does it say "32-Bit" in the list either? The exclusion of one does not imply the inclusion of the other. Sorry.
Vista is too dumb to understand what the iPhone is saying.
>>This is so funny to me. There are a lot of applications that do not run under the 64 bit version of Windows
That's not true. I have not found 1 application that won't run under x64 (I've been running it for a year and a half). The problem is DRIVERS. The Ipod and Iphone are both hardware, and crApple hasn't decided to make a 64 bit driver for it. x64 works REALLY well with 32 bit applications (Especially multi-threaded applications). It's Apple's dumb fault it's not supported on x64. Make a dam driver (heck, the linux community has done it).
My Ipod Does'nt work!! can anyone PLZ help me?
i went charging my Ipod and it sats Do Not Disconnect but.. after 1 Hr it still has not charged a fuckin' bit!
oh and if you need any Rs item or Cash or stats to 99
i got a stat editor :)
Well, I have Vista 32-bit, and keep getting the same error message as the 64-bit users get (the itunes software will not work with iphone, uninstall & reinstall....blah blah blah). I've called apple, they cannot help, at&t cannot help, and has replaced the iphone b/c they thought the phone was DOA. Brought new phone home, same thing. Any suggestions?
yeah your right, i just hooked my iphone up to my new computer and sadly found out that apple was dum enough to design a phone that contains the most advanced technology yet doesnt even work with a 64-bit operating system. steve your a dick. The same type of person that would drop half a g on a phone is also the same kind of person who would have a new computer without a 32bit o/s,
When it comes down to it, its Apple's fault their iPhone doesn't work with the 64-bit OS. Microsoft gave engouh time for everyone to create 64-bit compatibility programs but no one did until it came close to comming out and some still have not. Apple is a great company for those who just need a computer and will never need to upgrade their parts or buy the high end Apple good for graphic design. PCs own in every other way. But anyway, if Apple doesnt come out with a compatible iTunes that will completely sync the iPhone with the 64-bit OS then beleive me, they are going to get a $500 peice of equipment up where the sun dont shine while giving me my money back.
Under Notes: 1 64-bit editions of Windows are not supported
AHEM !!!!
Looks like 7.5 works on Vista 64 guys.
7.5 doesn't work. Just tells you to get the 64 bit version which as of Dec 1, 2007 doesn't exist yet.
I've used vista 64 bit since its trial package, it all worked well till the iphone was released, then out of the blue with all these error msg's.....now i use my pod as a portable drive an thats it.
My problem is with an iPod touch, but the trouble is similar and has no effect on what I see here. It looks like everything posted up here is ridiculous. All I see on here is half of the people blaming microsoft, and the other half blaming apple. I understand all about how everything works, the differences between 64-bit and 32-bit systems and what not, but when I shop I shop like your everyday consumer. When I called HP and said I want the best, "fully loaded" notebook, I got one that came with Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Contrary to what everyone says, there are very many people who run into this problem. The target group of people buying the iPhone/iPod touch at THIS TIME are people who want what's new, good looking, fully featured with a good "wow" factor, and have the money to blow off on it. These are not neccesarily people that have the need to run numerous applications that require a 34 bit system, just people who want a computer that runs the internet and micrsoft office awfully fast, and can tune into high definition tv in the back seat of a moving car to impress friends. I guarantee you a huge percentage of people who purchased either one of these devices fall into my group. Although I understand what is wrong and why, I purchased both my notebook and iPod because they are the best at the time and are sure to not be "out of date" too soon. Regardless of how well my notebook's system works, Apple surely realized that there is and has been a 64-bit windows for quite some time, and SHOULD have indicated this on the box. I have had iPods since the start and sadly lost mine a little while ago, it is sad that the reason i will not be able to own an iPod again is because I bought a new computer during this time. Seriously, if they wont indicate it on the box then simply make a fix for it. How about at least letting me know that there is a fix in the works so I dont have to stand in the lines at my local Best Buy trying to return the damn thing. There are people like us with this problem. We all have no choice but to return our new iPods.
im building a gaming comp with 64 bit xp because i want it to recognize all 8 gb of RAM good thing i looked this up b4 i decided to format my laptop drive (that runs 32 bit media center edition i guess there are a lot of programs im still gonna need my laptop for
I just noticed that iTunes 7.6 + iphone 1.1.3 now has Vista 64 bit (and I assume XP 64 bit) drivers that work with the iphone.
For those wanting iPhone and iPOD touch to work in XP Pro 64-bit, I found and tried the solution posted at http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64. God bless this guy, I now use my iPOD Touch with my XP Pro 64-bit machine without a hitch. So, enjoy it.
