iPhones sold out at a few Apple stores, many AT&T stores
If you want an iPhone, you haven't gotten one yet, and you operate in slow motion, now would probably be a good time to start worrying about availability. We've been hearing wide-scale reports since yesterday from AT&T stores across the country that locations have been unable to keep the device in stock, with some selling out in a matter of minutes after launch all video game console-style. For folks within driving distance of an Apple store, that hasn't been a problem so far because Apple's own retail locations seem to have been supplied with many, many units -- and that, friends, is what's starting to change. According to Apple's iPhone locator, there are still plenty of locations with stock -- but unlike last night, it's not difficult at this point to find stores that have sold out as well. Think there's any chance Apple's gonna let the pipe run dry?

That is because everything is on eBay. Have you seen the AMOUNT of iphones on eBay? I sent you a link yesterday for an iphone going for 60,000.00 dollars!!! (lost the link now...)
a lot of iphones are going back to the store monday or tuesday...wait and see! im taking mine back tomorrow. no one bought it! damn people.
Bill Gatez @ Jun 30th 2007 9:58PM
Yo Common, where are you returning your iPhone? the stores in my area are sold out. Maybe we can work out a deal. Thamks.
Common Core 2 Duo!! @ Jun 30th 2007 10:00PM
Bill,
i was selling mine on ebay. didnt sell. most of the 4gb arent selling. People only want 8gb.
I actually lost money because of the eBay listing fees and gas haha
Not more than Engadget did in returning all those iphones, thats for sure!
Bill Gatez @ Jun 30th 2007 10:26PM
Damn..I was looking for an 8GB. Good luck with your sale...wait a few days.
Kyrra @ Jun 30th 2007 10:35PM
Remember, there is a 10% restocking fee. I believe this even applies if you bought it from AT&T.
Constable Odo @ Jun 30th 2007 10:43PM
Did the iPhone that was selling for $60,000 have the serial number 00000000000001? That's the one I've been trying to locate. $60,000 is peanuts. I can purchase it now and sell it in 20 years for $1,000,000. I'll be rich. Oh maybe not. In 20 years, $1,000,000 will only have the buying power of $60,000 of todays money. I pass.
jay @ Jun 30th 2007 11:50PM
Geez! It's about time you wrote a story about the iPhone. I was feeling uninformed.
jilie @ Jun 30th 2007 9:52PM
Engadget get it it's a fiasco, as the aple Tv,
see on the apple's forums and generally how many people is happy

Of course people in Apple's forums are happy. If you haven't been around long enough to notice then I have to inform you that Apple's people routinely remove posts they feel don't belong there. Many of those removed posts are criticizing Apple.
My post has nothing to do with iPhone, and I have no idea about Apple's policy at the moment in their user forums. I'm just saying what I've seen during the years.
mike @ Jun 30th 2007 10:29PM
I think it's not accurate counting satisfied/unsatisfied users using the forum. Satisfied users usually do not feel obliged to post how happy they are about their new phone. While the ones that has problems usually post their issues on the forum.
MacBookOwner @ Jun 30th 2007 11:17PM
Oh, what bullshit.
The fact is those forums are full of UNHAPPY apple users. If you went solely by the Apple Discussion forums, you'd think every single user had a broken wi-fi connection, lost all their songs on iTunes, had stained handrests on their Macbooks, and every product was defective. The fact is MOST people who go to those Apple Discussion forums go BECAUSE they have problems. Its rare to see people just visiting to praise a product, in any of the forums.
jilie @ Jun 30th 2007 11:24PM
so also apple products are defective and not as perfect as their ad says? nooooooo..?!?#
Kendall Helmstetter Gelner @ Jul 4th 2007 12:27PM
Apple stopped moderating forums some time ago.

You forgot, iphone.
EngadgetFanBoi @ Jun 30th 2007 10:04PM
to be fair, it only seems to be sold out at select stores in california
... i was thinking about it and given apple's expectations of capturing 1% market share in one year (10 million units), they would have to sell an average of over 27 thousand units everyday for the iphone's first 365 days. so while it seems that they are selling a lot, if you consider the expectations this thing has, i'm not so sure if its doing all that great. 27 thousand units!
... on AVERAGE.
EngadgetFanBoi @ Jun 30th 2007 10:29PM
yah, its definitely sold out in other states (my mistake)
Leonard Nimrod @ Jun 30th 2007 10:47PM
They set a goal of 10M through 2008, which is just over 18,000 a day.. That is 18 months and will include Europe and Asia, and maybe some countries on other continents too.
EngadgetFanBoi @ Jun 30th 2007 11:03PM
yah, you're right - its 18 months, so that drops expectations down to 18.5 thousand or so. still a lot imo, even moreso when you consider the $600 price tag. i don't really remember exactly how long it took the ps3 to come back into stock, but it definitely sold out at first. and then the price became a factor as most people just couldn't afford it (granted other factors come into play with games and what not), but this seems at least a little bit similar
sirnoobius @ Jun 30th 2007 10:04PM
I was gonna go to Glendale yesterday and photograph those idiots but then i decided to sniff glue instead.
I.M. Yerpappy @ Jun 30th 2007 10:59PM
Sniff glue! What for, iDoofus? As anyone can plainly tell, your head's already seriously farked up. You probably think people attending a funeral are idiots, too? What's the point, that dude's already dead, right? iDorkbrain. Just because your life is jaded crap, why not let other people enjoy theirs, OK.
Ellianth @ Jun 30th 2007 10:06PM
if we cared which stores were sold out, we'd go look at the supplies link by ourselves.
So your chart says iPhone sold out somewhere. Great now Mr RDR (reality distortion ray) is gonna twist this and say, "iPhone was in so much demand it sold out!!" When in reality he gave away a ton to his employees and still couldn't get rid of the stock.
On a side note, I think it'll add this to every comment: Can we have an Engadget forum? Some really cool people post in the comments here, we need a community! And it appears that you guys have some spare time on your hands (read the last couple iphone 'news' stories.) If you need a reason other than your loyal fanbase/readers, think of all the money you'll make running ads on the forums? :).
If this gets posted 2x sorry, there was an error so i went back and pushed the post link again.
James @ Jun 30th 2007 11:51PM
Ellianth, you're either uninformed or just twisting things to suit your iHate. You said, "in reality he gave away a ton to his employees and still couldn't get rid of the stock"--but in reality, as Steve Jobs made clear in his announcement last week, Apple employees won't receive their free iPhones for a few weeks yet, until after initial demand is expected to subside. Any shortages in stores now have nothing to do with employee giveaways.
Also, the fact is that AT&T has reported that "virtually all" of their stores sold out of the iPhone the first day. This has been widely reported in the media. Again, this doesn't exactly support your silly statement that they "couldn't get rid of the stock." (Not to mention, how is "getting rid of the stock" supposed to make any sense when referring to a product that is only 2 days old?!)
It will be interesting to see the sales numbers for the weekend and following week. Can anyone give a guess as to how iPhone sales are comparing to Zune? Have they already sold more iPhones in the first 2 days than total Zune sales to date?
Leonard Nimrod @ Jun 30th 2007 11:02PM
Nice use of the word 'ton'. Hyperbole much? Apple gave its full-time employees who have worked there over one year a an 8GB iPhone. That is about 20k units which retail for 12M. Those iPhones will be accounted for and be included in the sales but 20k will not make or break the the stats.
The iPhone is slated to sell more iPhones in two week than all of the Zune's sales. The number is over 1M units within a 14 days.
paul @ Jun 30th 2007 11:08PM
why are all the trolls so stupid? if you learned how to read you would have seen that apple employees don't get their phones until mid-July when the supply has caught up with demand.
Ellianth @ Jul 1st 2007 3:18AM
I must have missed the part where they won't be getting them for a couple weeks. sorry, silly me.
"Not to mention, how is "getting rid of the stock" supposed to make any sense when referring to a product that is only 2 days old?!"
What i meant by that was, selling out, having none left until more are made. If that's what you're asking.
But I still stand by the point I was trying to make... How is this and half the other iphone stuff posted here today worthy of being a news article. I'm sure I've read somewhere (here!) that there was a link on the apple site showing which stores still had iphones in stock. Why does engadget need to also post about which stores have some left?
@James, thanks for proving your point without insulting me.
@paul - Does it make you feel bigger calling someone stupid behind your computer screen. The article i read didn't say anything about them waiting for however long they're gonna have to wait. But you were right, I just learned to read yesterday, thanks for opening an old wound :(.
Justin @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:04PM
Apple employees do not get their free 8 GB iPhones until the end of July.
strayan @ Jun 30th 2007 10:07PM
How much market share are they estimated to have already carved out?
EngadgetFanBoi @ Jun 30th 2007 10:21PM
.02% if you estimate that they've sold 200 thousand units so far. they haven't released how many they sold, so its just conjecture
badtzmaru @ Jun 30th 2007 10:24PM
it looks like several stores in California and one store each in Navada, Hawaii and Jersey are the only ones sold out.
but even according to apple, they stores get in new stock every day.
The iphone sold out at AT&T stores because those stores hardly got any in the first place. the at&t where i bought one only had about 25.
John @ Jun 30th 2007 10:24PM
I know you can find 8000 of em. ebay. Some are going for under their retail prices. They aren't selling at all..... probably related to the junk keyboard.
jilie @ Jun 30th 2007 10:55PM
or because of the missing smartphone's basic features..
Constable Odo @ Jun 30th 2007 10:50PM
Who cares if they're on eBay. They still got bought. Apple got paid and most likely made some profit and some free advertising.
paul @ Jun 30th 2007 11:11PM
or because Apple did the launch right and had enough phones on hand to cater to demand, you idiots. many analysts said they would have around 3 million phones at launch.
jaylee @ Jun 30th 2007 10:28PM
Has anyone considered that Apple might just be not delivering iPhones on Sunday? It is more expensive to have FedEx ship them on Sundays.
jaylee @ Jun 30th 2007 10:30PM

mini.boss @ Jun 30th 2007 10:31PM
Expect Apple to start quietly recalling inventory to create some "OMG. Out of stock!" hype. C'mon engadget, lets not play their game.
If you want an iPhone you can get one. Especially when ebayers start returning theirs.
Dismal @ Jun 30th 2007 10:42PM
Shouldn't Engadget mobile cover the iphone. Especially all the minor stuff, like which select stores in California are sold out of the iphone. I really don't care for this much iphone news, because I don't plan on buying one. Don't get me wrong it looks cool and all, but I never buy a first generation stuff like this.
Zeus the God @ Jun 30th 2007 10:43PM
Jesus God, I have the word "iPhone" burned into my corneas...
dcenko @ Jun 30th 2007 10:46PM
Just bought one at the Michigan Ave. Chicago store... they were sold out of the 8GB and only had about a dozen 4GB left...
michael @ Jun 30th 2007 10:48PM
Thanks for the update Engadget. I'm quite sure many Engadget users are interested in yet some more iPhone updates.
BTW: They ran out of Tmobile Dash's at a store here in Houston.
JackBlack @ Jun 30th 2007 10:50PM
Just stopped by to let you guys know I got my iPhone yesterday. I am going to return it tomorrow when the store opens. I cant stand the keyboard. Also the battery can't be swapped out, and you can't buy an extra. Only phone i've ever had that you cant have an extra battery, so I wasn't expecting that. Web browsing is a lot slower than I was expecting. The screen looks fantstic, and it's in general a work of art. I will probably wait for the next attempt. It seems to me that Apple favored secrecy over having enough users actually test this thing. WiFi works well.
Sy @ Jun 30th 2007 11:05PM
It seems to me you have been living under a rock. How could possibly not know the battery was not swappable? As for the "keyboard", Apple have stated and most reviewers confirmed that you need some time to get used to it.
Leonard Nimrod @ Jun 30th 2007 11:10PM
There are all sorts of battery extenders for the iPhone/iPod.
The keyboard takes some getting used to. Using a touch-screen that isn't actually a touch-screen but a static sensor that uses preemptive typing has got to be a little challenging to anyone at first.
Dismal @ Jul 1st 2007 3:01AM
Apple seems to hate removable batteries for some reason.
Rob @ Jun 30th 2007 11:05PM
Man, I really want one of these phones.
But at $600 is way beyond my budget.
JJ @ Jun 30th 2007 11:20PM
Geeze... Noone seems to have thought this through - there's a 10% restocking fee. Almost every single comment on every possible problem was mentioned in the pre-reviews. They noted that the EDGE network sucks almost everywhere and theres the restocking fee. The keyboard takes time and I'm pretty sure it was obvious you either spend time learning it or you don't get it - or just don't get it period. I don't see why people wouldn't spend some time reading a little about it to make sure they don't waste a bunch of money just trying out - especially when its an expensive item.
plh2034 @ Jul 1st 2007 12:14AM
I am so sick of you gumps crying about engadget's iPhone coverage. They alredy gave you a way to log onto this site without reading ANY iPhone news if it's bothering you but no thats not good enough.
Manny S. @ Jul 1st 2007 12:15AM
It's never smart to be an "early adopter". You're just signing yourself up to be a beta tester.
James @ Jul 1st 2007 12:19AM
I just bought an 8gb on ebay for $560. So thats a savings of 40 bucks plus the tax ($50 in WA). Go check it out there are tons for the same price!
