iPhone and iPod accessories: what works, what doesn't
In addition to documenting every last swoop of the iPhone's interface, we've also been busy plugging this thing into anything we can find with a 30-pin dock connector. The results are actually kind of surprising: while it looks like a bunch of third-party headphones are out, most iPod accessories seem to work, although the iPhone isn't exactly happy about it -- it pops up a warning and offers to put itself in airplane mode so you don't hose your speakers with GSM signal noise. Ah, so that's what that patent application was for. Click on for a list of what we've found, and let us know how you're doing in the comments.
Works:
Most chargers we tried: Monster iCharger, Belkin Auto Kit, some cheap-o thing we bought overseas
Apple iPod docks: trigger the airplane mode warning but charge and sync just fine
Apple FireWire iPod cable: doesn't sync or bring up any warnings, but charges fine
Altec Lansing inMotion iM3 speakers: some radio hiss, but it works fine and the remote functions
Bose SoundDock: some radio hiss
Pioneer VXS-82TXS receiver with iPod control -- lots of hiss, but everything works just fine
Doesn't Work
Anything that requires video-out, like the Phillips DCP-850 portable DVD player / video iPod player
Xbox 360 (shocking, we know)

What error message are you referring to?
Thanks
I was referring to the "this accessory is not designed for use with the iphone" message. I did not put the phone into airplane mode before testing it, and it worked great. It was actually faster than my 30gb 4G ipod when browsing through the music, too!
JBL On Time immediately makes all sorts of buzzing and hissing noises if not in airplane mode.
If in airplane mode it gives the "does not work with iPhone" message, but still works fine.
Do you guys mind trying the radio remote?
Anyone having trouble with voicemail?
I am getting interference between the iPhone and my Bang & Olufsen computer speakers when the iPhone is placed in the vicininity of my MacBook Pro and the speakers - even though the iPhone is connected to the computer with the dock that came with the iPhone. Any suggestions as to how to remedy this would be appreciated.
Howdy...
Just tried this with a bunch of reviewed stuff. Here's what worked:
Apple Hi-Fi - Worked
Harmon Kardon Go+Play - Worked
Klipsch iGroove - Worked
Altec Lansing speakers (3 kinds) - Worked
iSkin Celurian - Works
Pioneer AVIC-D3 Car Stereo - Works..
One more thing about the Pioneer Avic-D3....
iPod funcationality works, and can be controlled through the stereo head unit, but iPod videos DO NOT play. Just audio files. If you try to play a video file, it plays on the iPod and not on the stereo.
Looks like there's no 'video-out' functionality on the iPhone..
Best,
Ben

which Alltec Lansing speakers did it work with??
The Nyko Dock Connector:
http://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Stereo-Link-for-iPod/dp/B0007LI13U
Doesn't work.
As anyone tried a Griffin TuneJuice for battery extending, a BlitzSafe car/iPod adapter (specifically the HON/M-Link1 V.2X), or a TEAC stereo with iPod dock (CD-X10i)
As far as the "hissing" goes, is this just when the phone makes a network connection (such a s a call or checking email), or is there a constant hiss while playing music with the network on?
The iPhone works wonderfully with the TEAC CD-X10i. The iPhone pops up a message when you start playing music that the accessory that has been attached is not specifically designed for the iPhone. This message gives you the option to disable the iPhone wireless capabilities to prevent interference. However, with my CD-X10i I have not experienced interference without disabling the wireless components of the iPhone.
I'm hoping that the TEAC dock will accept the Apple iPhone dock adapter, or that TEAC will release an iPhone specific adapter. The iPhone sits firmly in the TEAC dock using the 40GB dock inset, but it would be nice to have a specific iPhone inset to make attaching a smoother operation.
I tried it on my belkin car charger with line out, it charged with no error, but no audio came out of the line out (as noted above).
I also hooked it up to my Sony CDX-GT610UI with a built in iPod cable. The iPod functions worked as though my iPod was connected. I did receive the airplane warning, but ignored it, and experienced no hiss during audio playback. When it came to a video, the audio played through but the video did not play on the iPhone (not a big suprise, the headunit does not support video). As for the phone functionality, when a call is placed, the audio fades out through the speakers and then the call audio only comes through the phone (or the phones speaker if set to speaker-phone). When the call is complete, the audio fades back in through the stereo. When a call is received, the audio fades out and the phone rings through the built-in speaker, but not the stereo. The call takes place only on the phone again and the music fades back in when the call is complete.
Also, I'm typing this post from my iPhone. The typing is pretty good, I'm already a lot faster on this than I ever was on my treo (and I've had treos for th last 4 or 5 years). Plus the intenet and email on this thing is the best I've ever seen on a handheld device of any kind. The only downside is the lack of copy and paste, but that's for a different thread.
Tried it with my in car Jaguar Connectivity Module. It prompts a switch to airplane mode, but then nothing works. It does not act as a charger and does not work with the car stereo. :( All I wanted was it to charge it and no go. I am sad
Works using the Audi iPod adapter. Charges, plays music, and is operable though the in-car controls just like an iPod. It prompted for airplane mode, I denied, sent a text, and heard no interference.
I tried it in the Apple Hi-Fi and it said it was incompatible but it still worked just fine
dlo transpod fm transmitter works and charges as well....shifts to airplane mode, but worked like a charm
I didn't read through to see if this was posted already, but the Belkin ITrip is out.
Does anyone know if the iphone works with the JBL On-Stage 2 speakers?
iceLink + sends audio out just fine (although with the warning screen), but I'm not sure if it charges yet... the icon says charging, but I don't think the level has changed. iPod controls are disabled, but other home screen apps work fine while music is playing. One oddity... when a call comes in, the sound does _not_ play through the car speakers. Music pauses (which is the appropriate behavior), but the call comes through the iPhone speakers.
here's an idea: WHY DON'T YOU GUYS SET UP ANOTHER WEBSITE CALLED iPHONE-OBSESSED.COM OR SOMETHING AND LET THE REST OF US WHO HAVE HAD ENOUGH WITH THE iPHONE CARRY ON WITH OUR PRE-iPHONE LIVES.
I said previously it did not work with my Jaguar iPod connector. I was mistaken. It does work to play audio through the car speakers but does NOT charge the iPhone.
Has anyone been able to try a BlitzSafe iPod car adapter? I'm curious whether it will play and charge with the iPhone (especially considering there are other reports of car adapters playing but not charging)
can someone test a Griffin RoadTrip or equivalent? It's a car charger/dock/fm transmitter thing.
my 2003 mini cooper with the ipod upgrade blinked saying it would not work but after about a half minute it worked. when a call comes thru it rings thru the speakers (sweet) but does not made the car a speaker phone. if answered the conversation comes thru the phone or headset.
Which iPod upgrade? Which adaptors for the Mini work with the iPhone?
I paid 2 hundred to have a iPod connected installed in the car. Its the offical apple iPod kit for the mini cooper.
"She said: You Wanna Go for a RIDE?!"
- ups to the Twilight Singers fan...
Big ups right back at you, man -- Blackberry Belle is one of my favorite records.
What about that special video cable that came with the original iPod Photo? It plugged into the headphone jack and had connectors for composite video. And also the iPod Photo dock that had the same connectors to your TV.
Thanks
Anyone know if the iPhone works with the Alpine iDA X001??
No, the Alpine iDA-X001 does not work. It gives an ipod not supported on the alpine, and a this accessory is not supported on the iphone.
Kind of a bummer, but since the 2g nano doesn't work this doesn't surprise me. I wonder if there will be a firmware update on either device to allow it.
They said the 2g nano would work soon.
Does Nike+ work?
I tried my iTrip Auto and although it charges my iPhone, it does not grab the line-out audio.
Works perfectly with my Alpine IVA-W200 Headunit with built in Ipod controls and cable. Should work with other Alpine Head units
Plugged into the AUDI iPod connection kit (on my 2007 A3)...... got the "airplane mode" message, but cancelled that, and the iPhone worked fine - no hissing or audible interference. Operated normally just like my 60GB iPod was connected.
Alpine CDA-9885 head controls the iPhone via the iPod dock, however, audio out is through the phone, not the stereo. The iPhone does seem like it's charging however.
Also, the bluetooth adapter (I believe I have the KCE-300BT) works well. Once it updates with information from the phone, you can dial via the stereo for hands free operation. Unfortunately the quick select buttons (to go to 12.5%, 25%, etc) do not work in the addressbook so you have to manually scroll through the listings to find the one you want.
My partner reports his recently-installed Pioneer DEH-P4900IB car receiver with CD-I200 cable works, formerly used with a 2nd gen iPod nano. Haven't had a chance yet to talk to him in depth about how it works when receiving a call (the cable's routed to his glove box), or about radio hiss, but he's kinda picky about stuff like that. If it sounded bad I'm sure he would have told me -- he went through 3 different FM transmitters with the nano before giving up on that and getting the Pioneer unit.
I would guess the similar DEH-P5900IB, which uses the CD-I200 cable, works as well, and maybe the other units that use the same cable.
Update: Making phone calls properly fades out music and restarts after the call. No radio hiss heard.
Looks like I'll be getting one of these for my truck.
FlexibleDock (car charger with built-in audio out from Ten Technology) does NOT work.
What about the Wifi aspect.. can you connect to Skype and use the Iphone on the skype network?
MY JVC iPod adapter doesn't seem to work with my KD-AVX2. I get the airplane mode message, it recognizes the iPhone as an iPod, then just sits there blinking "reading" (whereas my iPod it blinks "reading" once or twice and immediately starts playing...)
simple question!! Does the iPhone work with the belkin FM transmitter?
Just to clarify: the Belkin car adapter will charge the phone, but it will NOT allow audio out via the line out port... the phone will just play music in speaker phone mode.
Really sucks.
Axxess Wire Tunes connection kit works fine (with the Airplane Mode complaint).
Charges (yay!), and the changer controls on my factory Chrysler stereo work as it
does with my iPods. nice!
I get the "This accessory not made to work with iPhone" with the dock that came with my iPhone. I either select "no" or wait and the message goes away. The message pops up even if I'm just connected to an electrical outlet and not USB. No idea why this happens.
From Ars Technica, the http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ExYLvyjK9OB/cgi-bin/ProdVi...g=181150&I=127SNI135 will remove GSM noise coming through AUX ports in vehicles, I just ordered one and will update after test.
I have the VW iPod kit in my 2006 Jetta. I get the message asking me if I want to switch to airplane mode or not and I choose "no". The music plays through the speakers of the car and I can choose my playlists with my dash buttons just like with my regular iPod. When a call comes in it pauses the music and the call is just in the iPhone handset (not over the speakers) which is great. I have not yet confirmed if it charges or not.
