iPhone processor found: 620MHz ARM CPU
Looks like today's morning's firmware leak turned up some well hidden details about the iPhone's hardware engine -- and also confirming some reports we'd previously received. From what we can tell, it looks like the iPhone's got a 620MHz ARM chip running under the hood. Specifics:
Update: Sascha at Gear Log seems to think given the recently discovered Samsung chip in the iPhone, perhaps the processor in question is a Samsung S3C6400, a recently-produced 667MHz ARM1176JZF-based CPU that seems to fit the bill.
- ARM1176JZF chip with TrustZone (enables trusted computing environment for media, apps, network, OS, etc. -- very bad for hackers)
- Can vary in clock speed up to 700MHz or more, depending on implementation (thanks, Nigma)
- ARM Intelligent Energy Manager (claimed to reduce power consumption 25-50% in portables)
- 16K / 16K cache
- Features vector floating point coprocessor ("for embedded 3D-graphics")
- ARM Jazelle enabled for embedded Java execution (hmm...)
- SIMD, high perf integer CPU (8-stage pipeline, 675 Dhrystone, 2.1 MIPS)
- 0.45 mW/MHz power draw (with cache)

Cool. Hopefully i'll in the giveaway and be able to read about this on my iPhone!
this looks to me like stolen technology from the future...
psp has a 333mhz processor
runs 3d games and shit
runs browser with flash player
runs mp3, mp4 videos etc
and?
The PSP also has a dedicated multimedia co-processor for video and audio decoding, as well as a 166mb graphics processor.
Apples and oranges.
166mhz*
The IPod could well have other hardware co-processors (3D, video possibly another ARM). This will probably be a single chip SoC.
My iphone's battery won't hold over 3 hours in stand-by, and would randomly reboot itself when I'm a call. I'm returning it, and I hope they won't charge me that re-stocking fee.
I popped open my sim card tray on my iPhone and the card had the 3g icon on it. Does that mean AT&T will eventually allow iPhones to surf on their 3g network? Is that even possible?
All of the new ATT/Cingular SIMs are branded that way.
hope my stock dont end up in the pigs! pen????????? clint
Im going to return mine tomorow. I spoke to Apple rep today about the battery issue I'm having. They told me to do one final test and if the issue still occurs they are going to replace it with the new one.
I got it fully charged this morning and when a friend of mine played around with it for abouit 30 mins or so, the battery dropped to about 10-15% left. And some other weird stuff.. battery related.
Hurrah for Acorn Computers!
Welcame back Apple Newton!
No wonder it's so fast with all the transitions and operations!
I thought this story ran here already. At first introduction I saw a lot of places getting this essentially right. I mean, it was unconfirmed, but places knew it was samsung, who had just recently announced the release of this chip. Stock blogs had the d/l.
The samsung chip makes more sense, to me anyways.
sounds cool to me

I said no to the iPhone for the following reasons.
1. No voice dialing!
2. The keyboard is insconsistent in that in Safari, it can be tilted, but in other apps that use just as much text, it does not.
3. Price Gauging!
Go buy direct from Apple or Att and you have a miminum of $109.99 for a family plan. Now go buy a regular plan from ATT and get two free phones (I got two brand new razors), and you get for $59.99 the same amount of minutes. Then add the $20 internet (UNLIMITED) plan, and you have everything for $79.99. Buy the iPhone and you just saved $40 per month! That is $500 per year or two iphone with the two year contract!
The fact that this is happening, let me to the understanding of how much Att is reaping us off.
I mean, come on! Why aren't they subsidizing the phone just like any other phone? I just got two razors for FREE without ANY rebates! Compare that with the iPhone deal where if you cancel the contract you have to pay $175 even if they did NOT subsided the phone, and you can see the picture!
4. The price is just to high, for the price of this phone, you can get a mac mini. That's just to much for a phone, that can't voice dial, no voice recording, no video cam, the list goes on and on.
To top if all off, all this software that is supposed to be added later on via updates, is already in OSX. So why can't they provide it like, yesterday?
For $600, forget about it.
Period.
@Dorian, 1 small correction to your calculations. When you have more than 1 phone on a family plan, the media plans are "per phone." In the case of your example, $20 per phone + $59.99 calling plan = $99.99 for 2 activated phones. Not quite as much a difference each month.
Also, I read somewhere else that the 1st version of the RAZR was $500. Does that mean the iPhone's prices are that much out of line as a 1st generation product? With all the development costs for a company producing a smartphone for the first time, I give them a little bit of a benefit of a doubt for the price they set.
Bottom line for those who are still contemplating whether or not to buy - read everything you possibly can about what it can and cannot do. Then, decide on whether this device is right for you. Everyone has different priorities. Don't just follow the masses ... OBTW, Piper Jaffray (an analyst firm) estimates a half million have already sold (http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9738446-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5).
Hum... I'll have to look into the $20/phone. I had T-mobile and I could purchase the $20 unlimited internet plan on a monthly basis if I so disired, or simply continue using it at $20/month for as long as I wanted to- cancelling at any time. Not bad.
I'm not sure if both phones had the internet, since I only used one, but I can't recall anything mentioned to me about a seperate data plan within a "Family" plan.
I will call tomorrow.
Thanks.
If I may add, the phone could be broken up in parts and even simply justify it's price. You have a Video iPod (of 8Gig), an good substitute for a GPS (which is one of the reasons I almost purchased it), a good phone (with a very bad speaker phone-bust still speaker phone...) The internet, etc. So it's not that it's a bad thing....
But when compared to what else you could purchase with that price, it's starts to make you wonder. Specially with the odd plan prices.
But you know, we only live once and it's only money. If you want to have the phone, go ahead and buy it. Ejoy it, it's deffinetely a good thing amongst all the things we need to deal with on a daily basis....
"The keyboard is insconsistent in that in Safari, it can be tilted, but in other apps that use just as much text, it does not."
Good point -- the keyboard in your free RAZRs behaves identically in the web browser and the other apps, I bet.
I don't even have data plan on the razor, since it would be useless to have the plan on this phone. I only activate it when going on vacation in case I have to use it as a modem for the MacPro if we are out of range of a wifi. Something the iPhone can't do.
In any event, the razon was Free, so I don't expect anything from it. I got it in the interim until Apple finishes the iPhone and Att subsidizes it like they do for EVERY other phone on their list.
They are taking everyone to the bank because everyone is in a feeding frenzy. I'll wait the waters calm down and buy it for a good $250 less with all the apps running as they should already be running.
ah, "one more thing"....
No way to use this thing as a modem for a MacBookPro! You can use just about any other cell phone as a modem, but not Apple's own phone.
Get a grip!

Ah, "one more thing".... Not being able to use Apple's own phone as a modem on their own computers is just insane. You can use any phone as a modem on their books, but not their own.

Sorry, my post didn't appear until I posted it again, so we got dupplicates...
Oh well...

Don't those soldering points look messy to you (especially in last picture)??
finally some usefull info about this damm thing
But how will iphone ringtones work? It's sounding like Apple might go proprietary, but I'm sure there would a huge backlash from users!
