The (fake) Engadget store returns in a new location!

Looks like reader Stuart Thomson spotted a new, second Engadget store at what we understand is called "The Pyramid" mall (or perhaps Sunway Pyramid mall?), also in Malaysia. We wouldn't be surprised if this was started by the same guys who set up the last shop -- that logo looks identical to the one on the first Engadget store. Are we on the brink of an entire chain of totally unauthorized Engadget stores bootlegging our name? We don't know, but if anybody's headed to Malaysia and wants to go give these guys a stern talking to on our behalf, hit us up!

James Ryan Worrell @ Jul 1st 2007 1:33PM
Haha. Well the guy had to be an idiot to buy a thumb drive that looked like a d-link wireless card. lol. it even had a mac address. I know all my thumb drives have mac addresses.
myles @ Jul 1st 2007 12:57PM
oh no, here we go again. darn those copycats. don't they know that there's only one true engadget?
if anybody knows the phone number/email of the store/managers, let us know!
Tim @ Jul 1st 2007 1:03PM
How come that looks like it's in an airport?
But hey, that engadget isn't giving away a free iPhone, so there.
NovaLand @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:29AM
You're confusing the shop number with the gate number. The shop number is just for being easier to find in the shoppingmall. =)
carlo @ Jul 1st 2007 1:09PM
Why don't they just call it "inGadget"? I guess that'd require some level of brain activity and sensibility, or creativity.
wellingj @ Jul 1st 2007 2:34PM
iGadget?
Dan @ Jul 1st 2007 6:47PM
iGadget is coincidently already copyrighted by Engadget. Haven't the faintest idea why...
Colin Hoops @ Jul 1st 2007 1:13PM
Another step toward remote controlled warfare on a big scale
PeteC @ Jul 1st 2007 1:19PM
Hilarious, I guess they're just selling all those "keeping it real fake" items you report on under Engadget's name. I wonder how long it'll take for competitors to set up a Gizmodo store next door!
Mike @ Jul 1st 2007 1:21PM
Flattering...
long3000 @ Jul 1st 2007 1:21PM

I think I love you.
sudhakar @ Jul 1st 2007 1:27PM
Heck ! the word engadget is a copyrighted word across globe? I don't think so.
Zorque @ Jul 1st 2007 11:26PM
It's supposed to be, under the Berne Convention.
Rupesh Varghese @ Jul 1st 2007 1:33PM

Mac Money @ Jul 1st 2007 1:45PM
Just wait until they reach profitability, then sue them for damages and take half of their booty!
Lax @ Jul 1st 2007 1:45PM
hey, I actually mihgt be going there on holiday for a couple of weeks, i'll be sure to keep my eyes open
sr @ Jul 1st 2007 1:47PM
Who cares? It's just a little shop out in a mall somewhere. If anything it is flattering. Should Engadget seriously get into retail then it might be a concern.
kludge @ Jul 1st 2007 1:56PM
Why bother???
If Engadget.com does not have official representative or has not registered their trademark or copyright or logo in Malaysia, then why bother???
Do you really want to shut down that shop???
If yes, then do it officially by contacting Malaysian authorities or something. But first, register your stuff there. Otherwise, just take the bullet.
Ergy JB @ Jul 1st 2007 2:09PM
woow So completely Stupid can't you guys sue them or something?
and with that money build your own stores... hehehe
jordan @ Jul 1st 2007 2:13PM

Racism ain't cool, man.
Michael @ Jul 1st 2007 3:15PM
They definitey do a good job of copying everything about Engadget. With the way they spell computer and accessory as "komputer" and "aksesori" I'd say they're doing a pretty good job of copying Engadget's ability to write every post with several misspellings and/or grammar mistakes, as well.
Jesse S @ Jul 1st 2007 3:52PM
Because English is the only language!
Note: I'm an American.
Justin Koh @ Jul 1st 2007 6:00PM
"Komputer" and "aksesori" is Computer and accessory in Malay.
I'll go to this shop today to find out more later, it's only about 15 minutes away from my house.
jon @ Jul 1st 2007 11:03PM
they're loaned words from english transliterated into the malaysian alphabet. they are not english words, so your ethnocentric comment was unfounded.
HyperHacker @ Jul 1st 2007 3:16PM
iPhone.
Victor Hernandez @ Jul 1st 2007 3:48PM
Hmm an Engadget store, I'd shop there.
rajulkabir @ Jul 1st 2007 4:05PM
What race is a Malaysian? That's like saying a comment against Canadians is racist.
Jack @ Jul 1st 2007 4:55PM
You don't own the name exclusively to Malaysia, so if someone there wants to use it for commercial purposes they are fully within their right to do. There is another world outside you know
diverguy @ Jul 1st 2007 10:18PM
using their name would be one things, but even using their logo is another.... they do have things called "trademarks" you know...
Imran @ Jul 1st 2007 5:14PM
Well it is a damn cool logo, I'd want it on my store, if I had a store, sue their asses and spend the money on some prizes for some new contests, and use the money to send the prizes our way in the UK.
Imran @ Jul 2nd 2007 4:09PM
Yes well, the term racism is used in different contexts now, some people use it to describe discrimination against skin colour etc, and others to describe discrimination against actual nationalities (the nationality being the "race"), not really much we can do to dictate the contect of word use nowadays :)
Imran @ Jul 1st 2007 5:16PM
Uh, racism isn't just about skin colour, it's about the race!
Bongo @ Jul 2nd 2007 8:31AM
There's no such thing as human races. The only ones who belive that are (were) the nazis and the americans. In Europe, a racist is a person who belive that there are races and that we're diffrent depending on our look. That's stupid. The only differenses are social, intelligens, religion and so on. The colour of the skin, hair or eyes doesn't mean s**t.
Gadgetsguy @ Jul 1st 2007 5:27PM
Oh C'mon!! Anybody can clearly see that the g's are different! They did NOT steal your logo!!
hehehe
Rob @ Jul 1st 2007 5:52PM
To all of those who are saying "well, you don't own the trademark or name in that country, then you don't have a right to say anything and let them do with it whatever they want." That's not the point. The problem here is that they are using the name and logo of a known brand/product, and it's being done intentionally. By using the name "Engadget" plus the very same logo, and in the same field as the Engadget we know, then they are intentionally misrepresenting themselves. And that's wrong. Do you think Microsoft would allow something like this to happen? It doesn't matter if the name is or not represented legally in that country. This is not different from identity theft.
Again, the main problem here is that they are using the same name, logo, and in the same field as the Engadget version online. Therefore, it is a problem of gross misrepresentation.
Russ @ Jul 4th 2007 7:10PM
Right, well MS would actually pay to have lawyers take care of the issue. If the multi-billion dollar company that owns engadget.com gave a rip, they would do the same. Maybe engadget can hit its readers up for some free international law advice.
MB @ Jul 1st 2007 6:32PM
Isn't it worrisome that an Engadget-branded shop went out of business?
John @ Jul 1st 2007 6:32PM
Like I'm really gonna go to Malaysia and start some trouble with the locals - I'd never come back!
Flinkman @ Jul 1st 2007 7:36PM
I hate those g's...
Aaron @ Jul 1st 2007 7:39PM
Imran: So we're all the same then? Well, that's good to hear.
Aaron @ Jul 1st 2007 7:43PM
I keep wondering what makes them think "Engadget" is a good name/logo to steal for a computer accessory store. It just seems goofy to me. And the fact that it happened twice is pretty funny. Someone should go in and honestly ask them, "Why Engadget?".
Dennis Groom @ Jul 1st 2007 7:55PM
How can some of the same folks that are all about sharing music files or having the right to rip DVD's for 'safekeeping' (remember Napster and the like) have a problem with sharing a name? Geez.
