HTC Cavalier finally hits FCC
The HTC Excalibur -- better known as the T-Mobile Dash in these parts -- is one of those almost-perfect handsets that has us saying "if only." Specifically, in this case we're thinking "if only it had 3G," and that's precisely where the Cavalier comes riding into our dreams like a phone in shining armor. Thus far no American carrier has stepped forward with plans to offer the Cavalier (AT&T, we're looking straight at you, kid), but at least they can do so now thanks to an FCC approval. With HSDPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands on board, this sucker is truly a worthy upgrade to the already good Excalibur -- so let's try to speed things right along, yeah?

FCC? This phone had already been given to certain people in the industry, not to mention the Dopod C730 aka HTC S630 (Cavalier) is released.
But yeah this phone is nicer than the Exacilbur and is fast! 400mghz processor, reviewers say its the fastest WM6 phone available.
james @ Jul 3rd 2007 4:56PM
the Hermes (Cingular 8525) has that same 400 mhz processor and its hella fast.
paloooz @ Jul 3rd 2007 5:26PM
iPhone = 620Mhz. Maybe Windows Mobile just can't handle all that speed. ;-)

shabbis @ Jul 3rd 2007 5:29PM
The iPhone is 620Mhz, has a 3.5 inch 480-by-320-pixel (160 dpi) screen and will still probably have better battery life.
Jon @ Jul 3rd 2007 5:51PM
@shabbis
Stop bringing up that ancient 480x320 160dpi resolution as though it is so bloody awesome. It isn't.
Toshiba G900: 3" 480x800
Nokia N80: 220dpi

But, can you customize iPhone?
Whithin few months you will get bored with the look and feel. Too bad, you cant do anything.
Oh wait, you can (maybe) customize the ringtones, but you MUST BUY it from iTunes :P
Shabbis @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:40PM
I have never "customized" the past several SEs, Nokias and WM5 phones I have owned. Not even ringtones. All of those phones did what I wanted out of the box (well, except for the WM5 smartphone, it had way too many issues). Never felt the need to customize.
Miles @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:15PM
iPhone is customizable enough.
Why would you want to change the beautiful UI it has?
Ringtones and Wallpapers are good enough.
ScOObyDoo @ Jul 3rd 2007 4:45PM
It's already available from the various dealers as the Dopod C730, for as low as $425, whis is extrmely hot.
Fatima @ Jul 3rd 2007 4:54PM

Yes, 3G is great but... if only they would use SD instead of mini or micro SD. My guess is micro which sets the flash limit at 2GB (for the near future anyways) Of all the iPhone criticisms, I have yet to see any smart phone support 8GB and in this day and age, 2GB is paltry. After pics, some small videos and 4 states of GPS maps, I'm lucky if I can fit 100 songs.
Then when we do finally see 8GB micro SD, it'll prob hit the street at > $100. Meanwhile I have to pretty much just toss all the other flash memory in the trash. Why, why, why!!!
What good is an expandable memory slot if the format changes with every new device I buy??
Mark @ Jul 3rd 2007 5:31PM
You can get 4GB micro sd right now, for only $60. http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4159987&JRSource=googlebase.datafeed.CBY+SDU4GBS
Pizzamang @ Jul 4th 2007 7:55AM
Not yet available, coming soon.
If microSD goes the same route as MiniSD, then look for these cards to not work in the older devices.
1jaxstate1 @ Jul 3rd 2007 5:34PM
Where will the US companies pick up these phones. I've been dying to get the Kaiser, but it's not release in the states yet.
ScOObyDoo @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:07PM
That is because nobody has released it yet. Wait another month or so...
ItsTheOMGShow @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:46PM
It's a good question. Why would AT&T go for this, they have the 3G Blackjack, which is 'prettier' than this, though NOT a better device.
Samsung probably has their own upgrade to the Blackjack in the works also.. only thing left is T-Mobile and it's not approved for T-Mobile's 'leftover' broadband so blah who the hell knows
John Cameron @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:41PM
Exactly !! that is why the I MATE JASJAR stills holds its own. A solid SD slot - 3g access and a mini usb port - good stuff - and it runs WM6 nicely - provided you use the correct ROM.
WY @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:54PM
Is there a slightest chance that this phone will come to t-mobile as a replacement of Dash? Geeezus, t-mobile's smartphones are pretty underpowered...
derek_ph @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:08PM
This phone shouldn't be compared to the iPhone, it is not at all targeting the same market. For a WM6 OS phone 400mghz is as fast as you want it to be.
Wifi. 3g. WM6. 2mp camera...not bad.
Aaron @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:24PM
Yeah, why are all these iPhone folks yapping about a Windows Mobile device?
You got your iPhone, be happy, shut up and go away. Geez, it wasn't like the entire world didn't stop for you already.
Leave us Windows Mobile fans to our own private gadget lust.
I for one am excited about this phone since I was already *this* close to getting the Excaliber unlocked.
resource @ Jul 3rd 2007 8:28PM
When is T-Mo 3G coming out?
It's really fucking embarrassing at this point for them not to have it.
My Dash is trapped in the past.
Nando @ Jul 4th 2007 1:09AM
You said it, mister sister!!
I'm with T-Mobile and I am just dying to upgrade my phone but I would like to wait until 3G comes to T-Mobile.
Come on, T! I thought you were cool...
WS @ Jul 4th 2007 1:44AM
I have been using the c730 for a while now. not a bad WM phone, but battery life really sucks. If you leave HSDPA on, the battery won't last a day. Not even close...
Clint @ Jul 4th 2007 3:39AM
NO HARD DRIVE!!!! Am I the only person that feels like my phone needs more than 192mb of INTERNAL storage????! Why don't phones besides the dern iphone have hard drives? WHAT I WANT (and I've said this tons of times here) is basically a cingular 8525 with gps and at LEAST 2GB of INTERNAL storage!!! When?!?!?
Ayle @ Jul 4th 2007 7:35AM
The iphone is using flash memory and you can get a 4gb microsd card for $60.... And your 8525 with a gps is called the htc kaiser and will be released next month and is sdhc compatible which means that you can put those 8gb memory cards in it... Happy now?
jandrewg @ Jul 5th 2007 10:40AM
Ayle,
Get your facts straight. There is no 8GB microSD card. The 4GB MicroSD has yet to hit the street (some sites show it as a preorder item). This is the reason I have not gone to the 8525. It would be nice to have BT 2.0 so I could use my nice new S9 BT headphones but if it cuts my music collection in half, I'll stick with wires (and before anyone jumps in on this, I know they work with BT 1.2, but the quality just ain't there yet. Choppy and noisy. Bit rate too limited.)
The way I see it, using micro SD is a CHOICE the manufacturer makes. Given the difference in size, I can't see how an SD card vs an microSD slot would wind up blowing the form factor and I think they are shooting themselves in the foot. Why not compete on a feature (able to support 8GB) when you have a choice?
As for the iPhone vs Windows Mobile, much like Blackberry vs Windows Mobile, I see these as being different choices for different purposes and as much as you may hate all the hype, this will drive the entire market to a new level. The HTC Touch is a good example, and WM could also benefit from multitouch too. Too me, more competition is good!
Larz @ Jul 5th 2007 1:45PM
Meh. Give me a phone that's really small and has really long battery life... I could care less about *trying* to surf the internet with it, or taking crappy pictures, etc.
Suraj @ Jul 14th 2007 10:18PM
It has been noticed that 2 out or every 3 iPhones sold have defective batteries.
