DVD Jon whips up a way to activate iPhone without AT&T
The headline kind of says it all: a little hex editing of iTunes, a little hostfile hacking, a little program called Phone Activation Server v1.0, and you're on your way to an AT&T service free iPhone, friend. That's right, Jon, knock that toxic AT&T-tied iPod-coffee out of Steve's hand.
Ok, so apparently the phone still doesn't work (we wonder if there isn't some kind of mechanism that binds the iPhone to select AT&T SIMs), so it's not like it's an unlocked device, but at least you can now use it as "the best iPod [Apple's] ever made." We've yet to confirm the method though -- anyone want to give it a shot? Let us know in comments.
[Thanks, Justin and Gordon]

"...so you can use it as the best iPod [Apple's] ever made."
It would also be the most expensive iPod ever made. I mean, I know Apple has a thing for setting high prices, but...even the best 8GB iPod ever made is probably not worth $600.
To each his own, I guess...
There was one other $600 iPod...the infamous iPod Photo (60GB).
Hasn't anyone tried to get their phone unlocked by AT&T yet.
Just do the "going overseas and want to use my phone" pitch to AT&T Customer Service; especially since it has your calendar, contacts, email on it.
If you can't, I think the lack of ability to be able to use the phone overseas (while based in US) is a big issue.
I cant believe no one got the "The Office" reference in the pic... Dwight getting faxes from himself in the future? Classic...
Theres an Iphone modding community here: www.modmyiphone.com
Its from the same group of chaps who run mod my moto..
Anyhoo..
yea someone needs to try the overseas trick.... i believe AT$T is obligated to give the unlock code to anyone who asks for it...
They're not obligated to give you anything. AT&T will generally provide unlock codes for phones 90 days (3 months) after you begin a service contract with them, but it's not under mandate of law.
What you're thinking about is a copyright office position that unlocking cell phones does not violate copyright or anticircumvention laws. It just means you won't be prosecuted for doing it.
Further, I doubt AT&T even has the unlock algorithm for the iphone, assuming one even exists. I don't see Apple willing to give it out.
That's absolutely incorrect. UNIX was designed by programmers for programmers in a university / research lab environment. As such, it was a trusted environment and ability to collaborate was paramount. Only when business started using it did security become a concern. UNIX security came about though lengthy usage and evolution, to the state it is today, but it was far, far from being designed from the ground up for security.
I don't get it. Why would anyone buy a $600 phone and not activate it, but look for a hack to make it work like a pda/ipod? At the same time, also complain that the PS3 is too expensive (on other threads).
Uh...remember all those posts that got Apple fanboys hot about iPod having a wireless function? How about all the Engadget posts arguing that wireless downloading is the next logical step? No?...hm what about Sandisk and Microsoft's wireless DAPs? Sandisk tethers you to Yahoo Music, and Microsoft's Zune is just DRMed garbage. The point is that this paves the way for a wireless iPod that can pull tracks with some more software mod, leading to a commercial model that you, KC, will unthinkingly plop down $400 bucks for. Ungrateful bastard.
Maybe because its the first step toward a true unlocking...
Gordon, if they really wanted you to have a wireless ipod, they would have made it with 802.11a/b/g/n, and included something like Skype on the phone. And enough of the insults. Grow up.
That's one expensive Nano....
Majority of users out there are complaining about the iphone. What phone do u currently have? Nokia N95, that has some flaws. Cingular 8525, that has flaws. Crackberry, flaws. Not 1 device is perfect or claim to be perfect. Iphone is not a PC replacement. the majority of the products, almost all of them can be reversed engineered, so why do people keep hating on the device? just dont buy it if u dont like it. hackable or not hackable. All OS's have security issues. 1 thing you need to remember is that you can have the most secure network out there, most secure OS and hackers can still get into your system if they want to. so stop the ranting. i bet once the iphone price drops down in price so you broke ass haters can afford, u will be jumping on the band wagon as well. if anyone is curious, i have a cingular 8525.
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the biggest reason to unlock the iPhone:
Those of us not on AT&T and in the US
I'm on Telus in Canada. Rogers Wireless has exclusive rights to carry the iPhone here, but even that won't be for some time. And at that, Rogers is the shittiest carrier in Canada. I live in St. John's, Newfoundland, and this is the *only* place where a Rogers phone can get a signal. It can get crappy service in some of the surrounding towns (3 bars tops), but that's it. The rest of the province, a Rogers phone is just a brick. This is in stark contrast to Bell Aliant's network (which Telus uses as well), which has 1x-EVDO (a 3G technology) service across the island. Only the most remote towns don't get service. And it's not even spotty: if your phone gets a signal at all, it's EVDO.
And I *really* want an iPhone.
So you can see why people would be so eager to unlock it so people are free to use it on whatever network they wish.
Hm, does anybody else have problem eith Jons homepage?
i cant see the comments, nor can i browse the archive, nor to the contact page etc.
it looks like the mod_rewrite part is corrupt
i see the same page whatever i surf
http://nanocr.eu/kjh/asdfsdf/asd/asdasd/
http://nanocr.eu/contact/
http://nanocr.eu/
everything the very same page
I don't know if anyone caught it but that's a picture from the show the Office (US version) with dwight knocking a "poisoned" cup of coffee out of Stanley's hand.
This only provides access to the iPod section, nothing else really. All the other features require EDGE to work.

Hardly just the iPod. Presumably the calendar, photos, camera, clock, calculator, and notes applications would all work in addition to the iPod app. And assuming you're within range of Wi-Fi I'd guess that you'd be able to use stocks, maps, weather, email, and Safari as well.
I would like to know how to do this, email please. I could care less for AT&T, because I have t-mobile. I should be getting the Ipod-touchscreen er, iPhone soon through a friend.
HEY GUYS!!!
PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS TRUTH!!!!!!!
i live in mexico and i beg for an unlocked iphone
i found this website... www.iphoneunlocking.com
please someone tell me if it works!!
someone with an iphone please go there and try it
and if it works please let me know!!!
please people i'm dying here, i need and iphone now!
Anyone using or creating this software is very likely violating the DMCA and the EULA of the iPhone. The iPhone contains at least 700MB of software that is shutdown and unusable until you properly activate it.
Substitute the legal word "license" for the cellphone term "activate" and I think you will begin to see the issue.
On a moral level this isn't your previous cellphone. The carriers gave you a small break on the price of the phone and then sucked your blood for years, often never allowing the phone to be unlocked. They would never upgrade the firmware of your phone (even if you begged), you never got improvements/fixes unless you bought a new phone. A bad bad bad deal and one of the major reasons I was standing patiently in line to get an iPhone.
Apple gets part of the data plan money. This money will be used to fund further improvements to the iPhone you bought. I'm tickled pink to give Apple $5 (or whatever they carved out of the greedy clutches of AT&T) per month for them to keep improving my iPhone with new capabilities.
If you want a 6G iPod: its coming. It will cost less than an iPhone, it will weigh less and it will have better battery life (no GSM radio). So why spend double, violate the EULA/DMCA and hurt Apple when you can just wait a few more months?
One last point: why is Apple taking the unusual, for them, move of not claiming profits on the iPhone in the quarter of the sales of the units?
Because Apple still hasn't made a profit on the iPhone. Even if Apple sells one million of them this week they won't have turned a profit. They've spent over two years with hundreds of people porting Mac OS X to the ARM CPU as well as developing the hardware itself. They've poured hundreds of millions of dollars into creating this device, and will continue to pour in even more. As iPhone haters keep pointing out: features are missing. Those features will require more $$$ to get them implemented.
Even worse in my opinion, these criminals writing this software to take money away from Apple will divert some of the resources that could be spent implementing iChat (or whatever your shiny shiny missing feature is) and they'll be spending them shutting down these thieves.
If you are tired of the tyranny that has been Motorola, Nokia and Sony then now is the time to stand up and tell these criminals: NO! And I hope Engadget gets a DMCA take down notice or ten for linking to this material.
Wasn't there an article on Engadget that showed the iPhone didn't have a 700MB OS?

It won't work on Telus even if unlocked. The iPhone will still be a GSM based phone and still won't support 3G or CDMA. So your choice in Canada is going to be Rogers or Rogers in most provinces.
Here in the states, we have a choice of T-mobile, AT&T, or in some cases we have rural cellular companies (Unicel, LongLines, Dobson, C1, Alltel GSM, etc.).
didnt jobs say one (about apple TV) its your hardware you can do what you want with it" or something?
Dude I wish AT&T would just let other carriers support it, I mean Apple is still making their millions of dollars off of it! I have the 8gb and I love it but I'm not too fond of the AT&T service...but for all the features it has i'm willing to give up T-Mobile for it! Lol but seriously, I wish they at least just got customizable ringtones and MMS, I hate not being able to send or receive pics without using the E-Mail feature!!! And even then, I can't save the pics I receive!! It sucks! But with the damn good camera, music, videos, Safari browser, E-Mail, YouTube, Weather and Google Maps with it's infinite uses, how can I COMPLAIN???
PS Those of you that complain about all the iPhone coverage, if you HAD ONE you would want to read about the current news on it too, so PLEASE if you don't want to read it, THEN DON'T READ IT, they put it up for those of us that DO, so you just have to skip over it! You're wasting A LOT more time complaining!!!
Okay, well after my last comment I decided to check if my iPhone even had a sim card slot, and after taking it out of my clear case...(*drum roll*)...it doesn't have ANYTHING that opens up, no cover comes off, no piece that you can even UNSCREW... so even if you DO get it unlocked, it's not about to be unlocked and USED with any other carrier, maybe just as an iPod or PDA but not a cellphone!!!
iPhone & Bombs
by A. Tressor
Yesterday Apple corporation began selling its much coveted and anticipated iPhone all over the U.S. Not to be upstaged, Microsoft planted two car bombs in London to steal the news time, and hopefully upstage Apple. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the bombs inside the cars rigged with explosives, were designed by the same team of engineers who designed Windows Vista operating system, and the cell phones used to trigger the detonators were running Windows Mobile software. While Apple iPhones began selling like hot cakes at 6 PM New York time, Microsoft’s upstaging event was a real bomb. Nobody in London got hurt, because no matter how hard they try, Microsoft can’t even bomb well.
i have used the DVD Jon method and now my iphone is working except the phone, but you can sync it and use all other services
Well i think that the iphone is like the security they have in Japan when you get the phone it is locked to your own personal settings and all the programs with it you try to unlock and get it cheap ie import to the UK and it is a useless piece of crap as no other network can support so no programs or something like that
Hey guys, check out: http://www.unlockingtheiphone.com
They are raising money to give to the first person that can unlock the iPhone.
They even mention DVD Jon on their FAQ page.
I am planning to buy the iPhone, but it will not be available in my country (Kuwait) until early 2008.
can I use your crack code to unlock the device and use it now??
thanks.
