David Pogue's iPhone musical sing-a-long
Ever wonder how David Pogue's Broadway musical background could qualify him as the tech pundit for the New York Times? Us too, until now. Pogue digs deep (well, not that deep) into his theatrical bag of tricks to pull out the all singing, all geeking musical entitled, "I want an iPhone." Absurd as it is endearing, he deftly pokes fun at the device's flaws while simultaneously expressing devotion. Hell, he even unites iPhone haters (rolling your eyes right now) and cultists (if you end up singing along) alike with a high-larious jab at AT&T -- after all, who ever heard of an AT&T fanboy?

haha, heard this song earlier, it's awesome! xD
Pogue and Mossberg are sadly quite tech-unsavvy... they do point out minor flaws of the device, but ignore the really bad ones. and they keep on calling it a smartphone...
this is good evidence that all you have to do to become a star and 'tech expert' is to have some charisma, entertain the stoopid masses and tell them almost only what they'd like to hear... pathetic
and gizmodo were just as pathetic yesterday, calling the iPhone a 'high performance smartphone'..
so many lies, so little real knowledge...
Yeah, because the blackberry is OH SO SMART.
please, its a phone, whats the big deal about it? the last time a 600 dollar product came out, it was despised around the world, now when a tiny usless device comes out, the world is up at arms. Yes im referring to the ps3, but i hate sony, but the fact stays there, people are idiots, and will continue eating apples shit. Sadly, i own a mac, but their products are NOT that good! there better and worse, its just a fuckigng, ya know, idk what it is, if its a crazy or what. All i know is its been taken to far, it may be good, but really, its getting out of hand. Last time a truly good product came out, no one gave a rats ass about it, since thousands come out a year, but i dont get why this is getting all the hype, when other, ACTUAL smartphones are out, doing better, more innovative things, and actually are "smart" I officially hate Apple and AT&T (ironically i use both *runs and cries in shame* ) :(
what is this "truly good product" are you referring to? if no one "gave a rats ass", could it possibly because it actually wasn't a "truly good product"?
and why do people like you keep on referring it to a "smartphone"? it's not... it's a multi-touch phone that has 4/8gb embedded that focuses on media and internet browsing... the next closest thing springs to mind is the nokia N91 and it is nowhere near as sleek nor popular (the sales number says it all)... if you claim that it does 'next to nothing' then please name a phone you have in mind with the emphasised function of the iphone - a multi-media sleek phone with multi-touch technology. struggling? thought so...
and no, i don't own anything from apple apart from their shares, so i haven't 'sold them my soul'. it has actually earned me enough dough i could get a few dozens of the iphones if i could be bothered. it doesn't cater to me (i need 3G and i like moto), but i can see why it caters to a lot of people (or fanbois) and boy am i glad that i acted on what i see...
@ LordFarkward - I am referring to actual smartphones, which sell, but dont get the public attention of this
to your second paragraph, i dont refer to it as a smartphone, i refer to it as a souped up nano. And it does to next to nothing, when you look at all the things PalmOS and Windows mobile devices can. And another product like the iPhone, that has more functions you ask? http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13082 I dont know to much about it, other than that. And there are many other touch-based multi media devices out there, just look outside the tv ads.
And glad that your cashing in on their stocks. that was the clear goal of this product, cash. And it dosnt cater to me either, hence why i dislike it so much. the only real reason its so popular, is because its hip to have. It dosnt matter what it can do, if it makes you cool, people will buy it (another reason why i hate it) Imo, its nothing new to me, i have had previous devices that can do similar things, the iphone has useless features, and dosnt even innovate on what it is, a phone. Id like to see a real product come out that innovates the actual idea of the phone, not bog it down with useless features that arent meant for a phone.
@LordFarkward: how is multitouch a function? It's a frigging UI principle. A means to get something done. What exactly it gets done compared to real smartphones remains to be seen. Look beyond the fingerlickingly good eyecandy and ask yourself which functionality the iPhone really excels at? It's obvious that the iPhone fanbois don't buy the phone for its "functions".
hmm-hm and who's buying the N95 for "functions"? nobody, even though that's the device's claim to fame with gps, subscription-maps, etc etc.
I own a Nokia smart phone and only played with an iPhone for half an hour. But it was enough to make it very clear that the iPhone enables the features it has for the rest of us. On the N95, you _can_ do a lot of stuff. On the iPhone, you _want to_ do a lot of stuff because it's a pleasure to use.
For the operators, this is a complete revolution - a device that actually makes good use of their data networks. For the first time, no less. On other phones the data features are so bad ordinary people don't bother to sign up for data plans.
Blackberry and Apple are now the only makers of smart phones that actually care about usability.
Disclaimer: I haven't used a Blackberry but I see people emailing on them like crazy so that feature really works well.
Ileakfeatures is a fiasco!
Thi video is lame.
DOWN WITH APPLE!
I get it and all but Gosh!~ Why'd you have to go and swear like that?....
instead of the jesus-phone it should really be called the bush-phone, given how smart it is and how popular it is now...
I wasn't aware it was 'Be a Total Asshole day.'
I like David Pogue and his videos!
Pretty cool, uh?
@ Louis S. - (ok i will reply :P ) it isnt ,bu ta. my insomnia gets the best of me alot, b. i have gotten sick of the iphone hype, and c. i need coffee
2:05->2:11
I think that sums it up really.
Mr. Pogue is kind of a poofster, yeah?
I hope "getting a life" means "taking an English class."
Goemon - Don't go wishing cancer on people you whiny little kid. And quit your damn whining.
dont worry, wining stopped :D (again, my insomnia gets the best of me)
I started watching the video - right away, i recognized where he was in the beginning when he was on the bridge. Literally filmed one town away from me - Westport, CT - I guess he's a resident.
Anyway, it's a funny take on an Old Blue Eyes standard. Props to Pogue.
At first I found this to be a cute video.
But the AT&T swipe had me ROTFLMAO. Now it's classic.
On a side note, I went to another Apple Store in a mall in NJ, and looked at the iPhone again. This time, there was no WiFi - only the AT&T Edge.
My GOD it was BUTT-SLOW!
Playing with it some more, I realized the problem I have with the phone: Almost all of it's functions are touchscreen. While that may "sound" cool, in practice, it's not. Essentially, you have to look at the screen to know what you're doing. Just on a simple phone concept, this can be a HUGE hinderance. I realized how much I automatically know what buttons I'm pressing on my phone because I can feel where I am.
...And don't get me started about oily fingers! ;)
Not enough mispellings to be taken toungue-in-cheek. I give it a star and a half.
So why would Pogue make a video, upload it to youtube, but you can't access the video on the iPhone using youtube? I get an errorr message saying it can't be played. So I assume it's not in the correct codec?
I love how Pogue and the others do anything to piggy back onto the marketing of the iPhone to get attention for THEMSELVES! Patheritc Pogue. You are not a star. Even for 15 minutes. And a lame "tech" guy based on this video.
Pogue is hilarious. He may not be a hardcore tech guy like a Kevin Rose or an Anand Lal Shimpi, but he is funny, topical and covers all the bases well enough.
His new TV show on Discovery HD (or on the Science Channel for those of you not lucky enough to have DHD) is probably my new favorite tech show.
The video doesn't play on my iPhone. Love the irony.
To you Apple haters, you're taking all this too seriously.
Can you download this anywhere? The download for PSP/iPod button on Google Video isn't showing up for me. P.S. You guys are saying YouTube- is it on there, or did you mean Google Video. If it is on YouTube, could you give me a link? Thanks.
Pogue's credentials? form his web site:
"David Pogue, Yale '85, is the weekly personal-technology columnist for the New York Times and an Emmy award-winning tech correspondent for CBS News. With 3 million books in print, he is also one of the world's bestselling how-to authors. He wrote or co-wrote seven books in the "for Dummies" series (including Macs, Magic, Opera, and Classical Music); in 1999, he launched his own series of complete, funny computer books called the Missing Manual series, which now includes 30 titles."
He writes about technology for regular people - since you tech savvy guys obviously already know more then him - don't bother with it. If his or Mossberg's columns focused on what YOU needed -no one else (ie: who the WSJ and NYT's advertisers focus on) would care to read their work.
So just RELAX people - Pogue's doing something fun and entertaining - it's not like you PAID to see his videos! Sheesh!
Pogue rules. A few years back we went on a Mac Geek Cruise (oh, how telling - but what an amazingly great trip/vacation/experience - Alaska!) and Pogue was there, did a workshop on creating videos. In under an hour he taught us many cool tricks and techniques, and then led the group in creating a 2 minute Mac commercial where we put what he talked about to use. What a blast, and the final product could almost have been used as the real thing. Very creative.
