Nokia updates N800 with Skype and more
Listen up N800 owners, Nokia just released an update to their Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition. The update brings Skype client support, Flash 9 browser support, 8GB memory card suport, and "remarkably longer" battery performance when surfing bits over wireless. Yeah, it's not enough to spark mass market appeal, but current owners will surely be stoked. Version 4.2007.26-8, available now.[Via Maemo, thanks Ameh]

Flash 9? Does that mean YouTube works fully now?
John @ Jul 6th 2007 6:27AM
Wow!
'"remarkably longer" batter performance'
What kinds of cakes does it bake?

but I guess my question was... will this EVER work on an N770?
Olivier @ Jul 6th 2007 6:51AM
There's an official "Hackers Edition 2007 OS" that Nokia posts for 770 but doesn't support.
You could just move you lazy mouse and look it up before complaining you know.
I'm sure this will eventually be made available for 770 under this branch. Just give them a couple of days.

it's not enough to spark mass market appeal? like a Ileakfetures? LOL
DOWN WITH APPLE!

The N800 is a very nice niche device, Nokia uses it to create more innovation. An FW update like this that packs so many improvements fits right into that picture.
PEZ @ Jul 6th 2007 6:58AM
@ Oliver - it has nothing to do with being lazy. You are just an asshole waiting to happen. Oh, you just did. How about you move your lazy mouse and click the shutdown button on your mac.
Olivier @ Jul 6th 2007 8:26AM
Looks like I hit a sensitive cord...
You hated yourself for buying th 770 and (apparently) not getting any love from Nokia, and now you hate yourself that much more because you've realized that your distress was caused by your own ignorance..
Tss..
Have a cookie. Feel better?

Does the integrated skype client support video and the cam in the device?

Yipee!

Yow!
I'm not normally a Nokia guy, but I think it's time to look into this thing.
Interesting stuff!

Yes, I got one of these about a month and a half ago and I utterly love it. I am currently charging my device and backing it up in preparation for this latest update.
I can't recommend one of these highly enough, its a great way to get online when traveling over DUN with my cellphone, and a great way to get online when on the road or at home over wifi...
The browsing experience from this device is far superior to my pocketPC phone....

My N800 conked out a few months ago with a problem where it automatically reboots every six seconds. There is a fix, but it requires Linux (as far as I can tell) - any idea how to get it fixed by a third party?? (I got it on eBay so I'm not the original owner).

Nice job, Nokia. I don't have an N800, but have used the device, and this will make it all the more cool.

Fantastic. Flash 9 is a welcome addition. I look forward to trying this out this afternoon.
Hijakk @ Jul 6th 2007 9:54AM
Yup. Stoked. Time to flash that badboy when I get home. Will report on YouTubing if no one has by the time I get back.

Anoyone know of a retailer that sells these? Circuit City? Fys, Best buy etc? I know I can buy online, but don't want to wait....
thanks

CompUSA carries them, though at MSRP. They're the only retail B&M store I have seen carry them. Amazon.com has that much cheaper, though via TigerDirect.

AAAAHHHHH!!!!!! now if they could just add cell phone service and more memory.....it would be able to pass the iphone.....just add cell phone servce and u get the iphone killer.......
Adrian @ Jul 6th 2007 11:27AM
More memory? It can take two 8GB cards now, for a total of 16GB. Is that not enough for you?
wmw @ Jul 6th 2007 10:48AM
Just got a 770 (being delivered tomorrow) as you can pick them up for about a third the price of the 800. Can't wait for it!
NNTPgrip @ Jul 6th 2007 10:28AM
While I like the hell out of my 770, I would get the 800, but I want to see what that asus Eee PC is all about.

^^ what on earth happened to my post?
I think this is a great update for the N800. The only thing I'm really left wanting now is video support in Skype.
barrywoods @ Jul 6th 2007 12:47PM
It seems to break more than it fixes. Youtube is choppy, no more video to pcs, skype doesn't do video calls. Opera looses it's scroll bars. Some websites loose their buttons, text fields. Looks like we're going to have to wait for the third party app folks to fix some of their programs, some stop working. Some people say the touch screen is better, I think it's slightly worse. I'm thinking of flashing back to the last firmware.
James @ Jul 6th 2007 1:01PM
I wooted a 770 a few weeks back; they're a great deal for ~$140, but I'm not sure the 800 is worth the ~$200 extra they seem to cost right now.
I am aware of "Hacker Edition". I don't know if these new features will be integrated or not; also, it looks like it could be a bit of a hassle to install, and some people have reported it as being unstable on their devices.
My biggest question is HOW ON EARTH did they get Flash 9 support? I was under the impression that Adobe prepared a separate "Flash for Devices" package that they licensed out to e.g. the Wii and the PSP (among many others), which was the only way to get Flash on an embedded platform. Last I heard, they were dragging their feet quite badly, and hadn't released a version past Flash 7 for something like 2 or 3 years. Everybody was up at arms about getting "modern" flash on the Wii, and that was the answer that came back. So, does this mean that Sony and Nintendo can update their "embedded" Flash players to support Flash 9 as well? That would be much bigger news, IMHO. I'm going to have to look into this...
mobiledivide @ Jul 6th 2007 1:41PM
The update is awesome but really these features should have been on the N800 from the outset. I think the problems users have been reporting are the result of backups which seem to be incompatible with the new firmware. The N800 is great gear for those who want mobile browsing and with 16GB of memory thats substantial multimedia.
Superevil @ Jul 7th 2007 9:30PM
I agree with NNTPgrip, I was all about getting this until I heard about the EEE PC which Id like to check out first

Hi,
I love my N800, only problem is I cannot find a program that will convert a dvd to a file so I can watch it on the unit. I've tried many programs without success....Any suggestions??
Thanks so much!
