Alarming 'Ring' concept vibrates finger to wake you up
There's no shortage of bizarre creations that prevent you from oversleeping, but a Meng Fendi concept could actually help you (and your partner) wake up on the right side of the bed for a change. The simply-titled "Ring" sports an alarm clock dock with two times and a pair of wearable hoops, which enables you to wake up at a different time than your third-shift-workin' SO. Moreover, the elastic vibrating rings are donned at night, and simply provide a constant buzz to get your attention rather than wrecking your rest with a piercing array of beeps. Click on for a few more shots.

I wonder what happens when they malfunction or are placed in places they shouldn't be.
In related news, BDSM is on the rise.
eqsf @ Jul 12th 2007 7:14AM
they should make a neck version... that'd be hot and it'd work pretty well too, couldn't fall off, etc.
LordFarkward @ Jul 12th 2007 12:05AM
my gf will DEFINITELY love it to death... but not for the same reason why that girl likes it...
LordFarkward @ Jul 12th 2007 12:11AM
and yes, it IS an awesome feeling to think that the first post didn't make it, then you make a second one with added bits, THEN they both appear at the same time
very awesome. i am not one bit embarrassed.
cheers engadget.
mmiikey @ Jul 12th 2007 2:10AM
you're creepy.
agoodfella @ Jul 12th 2007 12:15AM
How come no shots of the female version?
ark_v2 @ Jul 12th 2007 12:16AM
Neat. Nice idea, as well as a great and sleek design.
eqsf @ Jul 12th 2007 7:11AM
i'm actually more curious about what kind of display that is there, displaying the time. is that e-ink?
Chris C @ Jul 12th 2007 9:45AM
eqsf: This is an industrial design competition. The "product" you see doesn't work. It's a mock-up. Therefore, it's likely just "printed" on.
Mickey Jones @ Jul 12th 2007 12:23AM
I tried this on my nipples and forgot to go to work.
Ransom @ Jul 12th 2007 12:25AM
i feel sorry for all the horny guys that are small enough that this would fit them.
LordFarkward @ Jul 12th 2007 12:28AM
you DO know there're other ways to please a woman, right?
spartan @ Jul 12th 2007 12:33AM
Reminds me of sam Fishers OPSAT in the Splinter Cell books.
DrewG @ Jul 12th 2007 12:35AM
I wonder what reaction people would have to something vibrating them to wake them up? Suddon aggressive interruptions from deep sleep can apparently cause psychological problems and imsomnia.
On the other hand, the design aesthetics are unique and attractive (iPod-esque anyone?) but it works!
Great innovation for the deaf too!
loci @ Jul 12th 2007 3:29AM
"Suddon aggressive interruptions from deep sleep can apparently cause psychological problems and imsomnia"
what...like the billions of alarm clocks that are currently used?
DrewG @ Jul 12th 2007 3:34AM
That's obviously not what I meant. I was referring to things like someone playing a prank and screaming right in your ear when you are deep asleep or a painting falling off a wall and crashing to the ground in your room etc
Brian @ Jul 12th 2007 4:33AM
I know what it's like to be waken up by vibrations. My first year at college my alarm didn't wake me up, and my roommate started shaking my pillow. I woke up death freaked because I thought I was being electricuted. It wasn't a good feeling. Not that the ring would stay on my finger; this needs to be a watch like device that would actually stay on me.
riggs @ Jul 12th 2007 12:45PM
who the hell has paintings in their room? :P
Mr. Hi-Fi Banjo Strings @ Jul 12th 2007 12:39AM
Love the concept. The Engrish in the promo materials...not so much.
Matt @ Jul 12th 2007 10:02AM
Come on, that stuff is great!
"A sweet dreaming is broken. The woman is feckless in the hospital."
mwalkerd @ Jul 19th 2007 11:22AM
oh, i though that was Globelish. but Engrish, no so good.
mike @ Jul 12th 2007 12:44AM
It will be great in places where people live so close to each other and their alarm clocks would be loud enough to disturb their neighbors.
I can hear my neighbor alarm is at 6am, mine is at 8am. It is very annoying.
mike @ Jul 12th 2007 12:47AM
I can hear my neighbor's alarm every 6am... rephrased, then forgot to fix the sentence... Please don't use those "you're an idiot" comments on these mishaps, we're all just human.
DC @ Jul 12th 2007 12:57AM
I'm surprised no one has commented yet on the line "She is feckless in the hospital."
Michael @ Jul 12th 2007 1:09AM
Personally, I like "the piteous woman" even more.
And is it just me, or does this promo just wreak of Asian typicality when the man works for an office, and the woman is a nurse? Are all Asian women nurses for goodness sakes?!
carlo @ Jul 12th 2007 8:27AM
@Michael
I dunno, but all we seems to know for sure is that a many Asian sweet dreamings were probably broken.
Bob @ Jul 12th 2007 1:10AM
I know that I sure would love to have this thing. I have to put my cellphone alarm on and put it under the fitted sheet on the bed just below the pillow. This way I can actually wake up. I sleep right through alarm clocks and fire alarms. This is exactly what I need.
David @ Jul 12th 2007 1:22AM
But putting your cellphone under your pillow is bad for you, because the microwave is always transmitting every 1 minute. So, this means that your brain will have the effect of a constant call's microwave distraction.
I do that too, but only with the phone in airplane mode.
Then I forget to turn airplane off and go to work with it the next morning...
trancer @ Jul 12th 2007 1:11AM
I'd buy one. As long as its not over $50.
Clayton @ Jul 12th 2007 1:19AM
this could be a great idea. if i ever hear my alarm clock during the day or, this happened to me once, hear an alarm on television with the same ring as mine i will actually feel sick. a weird, sickly vibration runs through my torso and arms while my head slightly dazes. it's classical conditioning at its best. i despise waking up early so much that the very sound of the thing that regularly wakes me makes me feel sickened. at least with this, it will be a vibration on my finger, hopefully unique enough, that won't be experienced again during the day.
Fruition @ Jul 13th 2007 2:38AM
lol that happens to me too, but I don't use a traditional alarm, I use my CD player, and the CD spin-up is really loud. So whenever I turn my CD player on during the day, and the CD spins up, I get that exact same feeling you describe.
But I don't use my CD player so much anymore what with MP3 players and all.
Chuckles McGee @ Jul 12th 2007 1:39AM
Looks awesome! Too bad the pics seem very CGI-ish...could be a while before we see this available-if we ever do.
Secret Asian Man @ Jul 12th 2007 1:40AM
As a hard of hearing person, I use a very loud alarm clock that also has a vibrating disc that is placed under the pillow. It certainly works in waking me up, but it's not the most pleasant way to wake up.
A more subtler vibration on my finger might work better.
brianhoung @ Jul 12th 2007 1:58AM
ONE RING TO WAKE THEM ALL!
Mischa Lockton @ Jul 12th 2007 2:00AM
frickin puritans.
topbusinessopportunities @ Jul 12th 2007 2:07AM
who would need this? :-)
Chris C @ Jul 12th 2007 2:22AM
This is an "industrial design" competition. The thing doesn't actually have to WORK to enter into the competition. So, don't get your hopes up, people... This, in the shown incarnation, is likely a LONG way away. Something that actually FUNCTIONS is not going to look anything near this sleek.
t-bone @ Jul 12th 2007 12:17PM
I agree. How are they supposed to fit a vibrator in the ring without destroying the slim design?
groundZ @ Jul 12th 2007 2:32AM
Why must all concept electronics be white?
loci @ Jul 12th 2007 3:31AM
could possibly be used to induce lucid dreams!!
Loc Huynh @ Jul 12th 2007 4:11AM
i need something like this...my alarm never wakes me up.
or i wake up and turn it off and go back to sleep or i just ignore it and sleep.
i usually tell someone else if they wake up early to shake me and tell me to get up
this would replace having to tell someone else to do it.
devon @ Jul 12th 2007 4:23AM
Well if Spider-man uses it, then it must be good.
Mr. Hi-Fi Banjo Strings @ Jul 12th 2007 1:31PM
Oh! Jeez, it took me a while to figure out what you were talking about. I don't remember his fingers being so chubby though... : )
Ed @ Jul 12th 2007 4:34AM
I want one!
Often have to wear earplugs to get to sleep, so some mornings even a loud alarm can't wake me up. This could solve that problem.
Me want.
Brandon Bohlen @ Jul 12th 2007 5:54AM
Why does it have to use the tip of the finger (Three reasons not to)
1. Is it really going to stay on there.
2. Some people don't have the tips of their fingers and most guitar players have big enough calluses on the tips of their fingers that they aren't as sensitive anymore.
3. I think the rest of the finger is sensitive enough.
Garrett @ Jul 12th 2007 6:44AM
I would love this product like no other. I can hear fine, but I'm a deep sleeper. Hence, I need a loud annoying piercing alarm clock that I wont ignore. Many a day started REAL pissy thanks to that crappy little box of evil.
treetrunk @ Jul 12th 2007 7:39AM
Nice concept, apart from the end-of-the-finger thing which is just dumb. In practice of course they'd have to be a heck of a lot chunkier than is shown in the picture.
W@keUp @ Jul 12th 2007 8:23AM
This is the type of alarm I would need

Oh Engrish... how I have missed thee.

Oh...I thought the ring was worn in another part of the body...for his pleasure.
