Video hints at customized iPhone ringtones
Chris Hughes -- the gent who brought us the RoombaWii -- is up to new shenanigans and this time with an iPhone. Apparently using a bit of software that is "... close to being releasable ..." he was able to add the "CTU" ringtone -- yeah, we know, poor choice -- to his iPhone. Of course, this would be dead-easy to dupe -- and we can't verify 100 percent either way -- but his honest demeanor, striking resemblance to Matt Damon, and previous tricks help us to at least hope that there is a shred of truth in this. Check the vid after the break.

"...Boom!"
how can i add and customize my ringtone for my iphone? What do i do?
Engadget Mobile had this yesterday... Way to stay on top of your sister sites news and being late about it!!
Um, no it didn't. Link to the story?
Geeee, just buy a real phone instead. You know, one that actually let's you use whatever ringtone you like without hacking the phone....
Responses like yours amaze me. What do you get out of slaming someone else's purchase? Do is make you feel better? Are you a life coach? Are you mad you couldn't blow $600+ on a phone?
Yes, I know I made grammatical errors. I appoligize.
So did Argot.
I forgive you both.
hmm, cant afford one huh?
fwiw, the "CTU ringtone" is the default from the old AT&T Merlin systems. ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Merlin
MEH! Another “crumb on the table”. How about the whole loaf (or at least a slice)? How about some SIM Unlocking?! No? Well get back to baking and call us when its ready ;^P...
IPhiasco
If only they'd release the latest version of iPhoneInterface, I too could do this. :-/
My wife has that ring tone on her blackjack, so it's an excellent choice. Too bad you almost have to brick the iphone to get it onto there.
do you have to make the hacked USB connector to do this?
Jack Bauer would be proud.
I currently use the CTU ringer on my Treo 680.
The good thing about something this popular (over-hyped?) is that you know any artificial limitations the manufacturer has spent millions imposing on the device will be hacked wide open by some guy living in his parents basement and drinking only coffee.
Anyone have any idea or here anything about what the first software updates might encompass? I heard Java or Flash might be first. I also heard that there might be a GPS hardware update. That you will be able to visit the AT&T store and have your sim card replaced w/ one containing a GPS chip. While that seems rather outlandish, I am interested to hear what others might be finding out about updates.
I wonder if this will void the warranty. I mean, this is not quite playing by apple's rules, and it is sort of reverse engineering making the product do what apple does not want it to do....
i, for one, like the ctu ringtone
this is great. i've got the CTU.mp3 on hold for this hack!
So wait...600 dollars and the iPhone cant even play your own ringtones???! My cell phones have been doing that for like 5 years!
just a tip for u verizon users out there if u want to get ringtones for free,(actually its the cost of a picture message)
first u get the song u want in mp3 format, then u cut it down with an audio program to the length u want (i use adobe audition)
the length has to be under 30 seconds, and when u save it make it mono with about 48 bit rate, because the total file has to be below 120kb in order to work and has to be in mp3 format
finally send the file as an attachment in an email to 12223333333@vzwpix.com
(222 is ur area code and 3333333 is ur cell #)
u will recieve it in a text message, and u need to select options, save sound, or save ringtone in order to use it as a ringtone on different phones
didnt work for me. could you elaborate, please?
hey, i love the CTU ringtone
everybody loves this, no engadget, thou shall not diss CTU 24 ringtone
Wow.. he DOES look like Matt Damon
I hear Engadget doesn't like my ringtone.
Haha. After reading this, I grabbed the sound file and put it on my phone inside of 2 minutes flat. Ah the joy of an UNLOCKED phone.
