40Gbps internet connection installed in Swede's home
While we've seen all sorts of blazing feats over fiber here lately, it's not often that such wide open bandwidth gets piped directly to a home, but a 75-year old Swede recently changed all that when she had a 40Gbps connection installed in her domicile. 'Course, this fine dame is the mum of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg, and she's hoping to somehow "persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections." The trick behind the setup is a "new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000-kilometers apart with no intermediary transponders," and just in case you're wondering, she can download a full high-definition DVD in a painstaking two seconds.

Can hard drives even write this fast?? Also can internet servers even send data this fast? It's pretty useless when other technologies haven't caught up yet.
11degrees @ Jul 13th 2007 9:07AM
Ouch.. faster than all I can imagine...

i don't see the purpose of 40Gbps, when everything should be focused on wireless technology. Fast or not, wireless technology is the convenient choice. Btw I assume its being used on a multi cluster raid setup of some sort.
Logik @ Jul 13th 2007 9:31AM
"i don't see the purpose of 40Gbps"
Tell that to a person in charge of a Tier 1 ISP network. Come back and tell us what his/her reaction.
Totalfixation @ Jul 13th 2007 9:40AM
It's my opinion, cost wise, we should focus on implementing wireless technology to begin with. Laying down millions of miles of fiber optic is time and space consuming.
Karan @ Jul 13th 2007 10:16AM
Yeah, wireless at that speed over 2000 km? Lemme know when you've done that mate, I've got this lovely flying pig for sale.
Dix @ Jul 13th 2007 1:43PM
How is laying fiber optic cables "space consuming"? They are usually buried in the ground. And there is no feasible way yet to get wireless anywhere near that fast. What most companies are doing now is best IMO: fiber optics to wireless routers in the home. I just got FiOs internet with wireless router in my house, and its just fine.
riggs @ Jul 13th 2007 9:11AM
everyone other than the US has a faster speed :(, i swear when it comes to technology advances we F*$%# suck.
nebulus @ Jul 13th 2007 9:19AM
yeah, but you guys got the iPhone first!
(sweet first iPhone comment on this story ;) )
phatbhuda @ Jul 13th 2007 9:29AM
The USA is a very large country. It takes a lot of cash to upgrade any sort of network nationwide. We're also a very privatized and capitalist nation, so customers are going to have to want to pay for these upgrades. I'd say most American households don't see a need for faster networks.
That being said, my stupid cablemodem connection needs to be faster!
W@keUp @ Jul 13th 2007 9:22AM
We but that servers us europians well. Usa can test the iphone and when all the bugs and bumps has been ironed out, we will be ready for it here in Sweden.

The Internet is the new cable TV. 40Gbps and still nothing decent to watch.

Do I want this?.... yes
Kishen @ Jul 13th 2007 9:48AM
@Totalfixation, you wouldn't need to write to the hard disk if you receive data that fast. You can just "stream". It could be the equivalent of opening files from a server on your LAN, except on a much larger sale.
Speeds like this have awesome potential for distributed storage. You could keep all of your files and your itunes library etc etc in a datacenter and access them from anywhere as if you were opening them locally.
Go Sweden FTW.
Fozz! @ Jul 13th 2007 9:49AM
"...she can download a full high-definition DVD in a painstaking two seconds."
Well, not quite. Even at 40gb/s (5GB/s) you'd only have downloaded about half an HD movie after 2 seconds. It'd take you that long to download a long SD movie (circa. 10GB).
I should get out more :s
mattweiler @ Jul 13th 2007 10:07AM
Actually, most HD-DVD movies are only about 10 - 12 GB.

Such a high download rate would be totally detrimental to my well-being since my greed far exceeds my computer's terabyte hard drive capacity. Until 25 GB or 50 GB optical 8X drives are standard, I'd be unable to handle the constant backups of downloaded movies.

PAXIO rocks. I've got it at there 25mbps plan and it is absolutely amazing. Doesn't seem to be any restrictions on peer-to-peer, and their support is second to none. Always someone knowledgeable to speak to when you call.
