40Gbps internet connection installed in Swede's home
While we've seen all sorts of blazing feats over fiber here lately, it's not often that such wide open bandwidth gets piped directly to a home, but a 75-year old Swede recently changed all that when she had a 40Gbps connection installed in her domicile. 'Course, this fine dame is the mum of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg, and she's hoping to somehow "persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections." The trick behind the setup is a "new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000-kilometers apart with no intermediary transponders," and just in case you're wondering, she can download a full high-definition DVD in a painstaking two seconds.

Jesus christ, thats fast.
And to the person who worked out that after 2 seconds you'd only have half of an HD movie, is it that much of a pain to wait a WHOLE 4 seconds to watch a movie in 1080p?
So this basically means that you could download an entire album, or an artists entire catalogue in an instant. coool.
im stuck with 1.2mbps atm, damn BT. (im from UK).
blu ray vs hd-dvd = the last physical format war.
digital distribution is the future with connection speeds like this.
blockbuster are screwed.

Nah. Blockbuster will adapt. I thought they would take a HUGE hit when Netflix got real popular, but then they came out with being able to take movies back to the store for a free rental. That's pretty amazing and it's what I use. I'm sure when digital distrubution becomes a reality they'll be ready for it. I can see them preparing a database of all their movies right now, actually. Theres a lot of technology that needs to to catch up for this to happen though. Home servers will be huge, but for that to happen they need to come down in price and be a quite a bit more user-friendly (the drobo is a step in the right direction). Anyways, that's my take on that...

imagine how much porn you could download...

That kind of speed would give me back the first urge i had when i installed my 128 kbps connection a few years ago (had no internet at home until then)...download the internet!
Parry Cadwallader @ Jul 13th 2007 1:22PM
Personally, I'm a little bummed that it would only take 3.4 minutes to download a terabyte. That's like...just under 5 hours for the entire internet, much too long. Oh well, maybe it'll get faster in the future.

...so when the MaFIA shows up at your house, how big's the 'bill'?
nVidiot @ Jul 13th 2007 2:42PM
Uhhh... your network card can only theoretically handle 1 gigabit.
So unless she has a very powerful router and 40+ machines that connection is being largely wasted.
Or am I missing something?
Stoobs @ Jul 13th 2007 3:20PM
Several companies now offer 10GBit NIC's, I suppose if you slung 4 of those in and did some clever routing you could hit 40GBit :)

Woo, check out that old skool Apple split keyboard.
nonamo @ Jul 13th 2007 2:55PM
DAMN! Here in rip-off britain im paying £18/$36 for 1mbps up, 256kbps up!!!!!! Its not fair
Mark @ Jul 13th 2007 3:35PM
Lets try bringing this to North America, specifically CANADA.
john russell @ Jul 13th 2007 4:04PM
Now that's the internets.
Luigi193 @ Jul 13th 2007 5:14PM
Wait, don't most places have a cap on downloads? I don't think any server will let you downloaded at 4 freaking GIGS A SECOND! Thats like 1000 times faster then my connection...granted I do live in a rural state, in the US. The US is already slow when it comes to highspeed internet...living in vermont can't helP!
Nova @ Jul 13th 2007 7:25PM
Damn, in quebec, the standart is about 7 mbits ("wow") and if you have money, u can get a 20 mbits with limited dl/ul......

This woman needs to run a Tor server.

Hello, you have called engadget. We're not here right now, but leave a goddam message and we'll pay you some attention.
Scooter @ Jul 16th 2007 8:36AM
Germany now sports 100mbit in certain cities, but elsewhere generally tops out at 25mbit, for now. 40000mbit is a pipe dream, excuse the pun.
fusk @ Jul 17th 2007 3:28PM
Damn, now i'm Danish, and my goverment wants to be the leading country in this kinda technology, but this is just crazy, like to see our isp's put up a fight vs 40Gbps.
Now my 20Mbit suddenly seems so slow.
Wondering about the cost, i pay 399Dkr = 73.9$ for a 20Mbit, so what would a 40Gbps be like?
ethana2 @ Sep 21st 2007 1:02PM
Economy of scale-- that'd be like buying what, a Q3 line? Maybe that's not what it's called.. but a line right into the internet's backbone, however they name it. Somewhere there's a connection that awesome, but it's not in a domestic setting.
