PSP lite approved by the FCC as the "PSP-2001"
The fine folks in the federal government have had their chance to poke at the new slim PSP, and it looks like the new model, which Sony is calling the "PSP-2001," has passed its FCC inspection. No big surprises in the filing, although it looks like the PSP Jr. will only be able to output game video via component, while UMD and Memory Stick movies get composite output as well. Other than that, the PSP 1.1 seems ready to go -- those of you too anxious to wait until September can hit the read link for the full FCC file.

"Hey I've got this PSP, it's portable! But don't move around with it because it's connected into the tv."
hemmy @ Jul 13th 2007 5:54PM
"...because I never, ever, EVER, play my portable at home - that's an astronomical impossibility. When I'm jonesing for a little GoW:Chains of Olympus at 11:30pm, I take my ass out to the moonlit streets."
Muu @ Jul 13th 2007 4:59PM
Reminds me of a Super Gameboy.

I wonder if someone will take it upon themselves to make the next set of downgraders...

but why the hell didn't SONY redesign it so it could accept a keyboard?
Even Xbox 360 is getting the Chatpad - PSP actually has a webbrowser to make good use of a text input device.
Any devie that has a web browser should have a keyboard.
Karl @ Jul 13th 2007 7:49PM
Because the PSP is portable. Nobody wants to carry around a keyboard as well as the PSP. It has TV-Out so that on the occasions you want to show a movie (which is encoded in DVD resolution on UMD), or, as an afterthought, games, on your TV - you can. The PSP gets a lot of customers by being a media device.
The web browser is just for occasionally checking emails and the weather and that. Not writing blog posts or writing emails. Besides, once you get used to it, the PSP text entry system is pretty decent.
Homestar1217 @ Jul 15th 2007 12:49AM
doesn't it save bookmarks though? i mean, unless your typing in a google search or a password, you really shouldn't have to type a lot anyway. unless it doesn't save bookmarks. which i wouldn't know cause i'm a loyal nintendo fan and don't have a PSP. but i'm not advertising the opera DS browser either because it is worthless.
Big @ Jul 13th 2007 9:58PM
that's absolutely ridiculous. IF A KEYBOARD WAS OFFERED, it would SELL. But what bothers me is the PSP was originaly ADVERTISED before its release with a keyboard

Obviously it was poorly designed but with the redesign SONY coulda given the PSP a touch screen to allow for touch texting.
Hell even my Palm IIIxe had that.
Jackson @ Jul 13th 2007 9:37PM
I was kinda wondering if they fixed the thing with the square button and screen thing.
Artr @ Jul 13th 2007 10:08PM
Just checking... it's 2007 now? not 2001?
Sephiroth @ Sep 6th 2007 11:56AM
ya, the PSP Reg. Started at 1001, 1002, 1003 so on, so the new one is going to be 2001, 2002, 2003 with each new updated MODEL that comes out, they will update the number =]
Brian Hull @ Jul 13th 2007 10:39PM
holy shit it looks ......exactly the same except the back is now shiny. whoopty f*ckin doo.
Hexxeh @ Jul 14th 2007 6:48AM
So they're saying you can output video and audio to a TV? That's EASILY done with some homebrew. Hell, you could leave the PSP at home and play it with your laptop over the internet with a little bit of coding.
SilkyZ @ Jul 14th 2007 9:15AM
It's like the DS lite or the PSone and PStwo (they are the slim versions).
I'm waiting for the PSP2 and the PSthree
pinsleric @ Jul 14th 2007 7:33PM
So is this the PSpee or PSp? lol, jk
Kinggi @ Jul 14th 2007 3:26PM
Dont know why so much hate here. For people who have yet to buy a psp, this is great. I havent bought a psp, so now i can get the best one, with some enticing features to help out on the decision. Its lighter, smaller, and the tv out thing is a big deal for me since i would like to play my portables at home but am not a big fan of staring at the small screen for extended time. This way i can just play on the tv. Psp is getting some exclusives i want like silent hill, so this seems like a good deal.
Kzac Hawk @ Sep 18th 2007 4:13PM
I don't know that thinner and lighter are better. Usually this means you have given up some heft and protection from damage. This might make the PSP more delicate and prone to damage. I would sit this one out until it proves is reliability. Any way the older versions will be available for a song in a couple of months.

Hi I put a deposit down for the psp lite, but after reading so many comments Im wondering if I should buy the original psp as I like the flip open umd rather than the umd on the new psp lite
