Wii Handle prototype turns up in video form

Not much to go on here, unfortunately, but it looks like we could possibly be in store for yet another questionably useful Wiimote accessory, with this so-called Wii Handle recently turning up on Google Video. Apparently a "patent pending" device, this one boasts a button and trigger at the base that seem to control the buttons on the Wiimote itself, with a wrist strap also thoughtfully included to prevent any unfortunate accidents. While there's no indication as to when or if it'll actually be available, you can check it out in action in the video after the break.

this is just an accident waiting to happen. by putting the remote on a longer rotating arm, you're swinging it faster, and now the failure point becomes the retention mechanism, not your own hand. i don't know about you, but i trust myself a lot more than a tiny piece of plastic at the end of a long pipe.

Before going to market, it'll be tested at twice the highest swing speed that anyone can produce. If the Wiimote doesn't break loose at that velocity, it can then be considered safe. Of course, the strap, which must be used, will also be tested under the same conditions. You have a valid concern and this is not directed to you, but I can't totally protect knuckleheads!

Longer lever arm == more spectacular television destruction!
TVGenius @ Jul 17th 2007 5:31PM
My thought exactly. Now we'll see them breaking CRTs too.

That's a new feature for baseball games. Every swing is like hitting a home run into the stadium lights.

his pause-and-stare at 0:47 frightens me. I wouldn't trust that kid with the Wii Handle.
Moez @ Jul 17th 2007 7:12PM
I wouldnt trust that kid with anything at all!

This extension would be great for the upcoming Wii-Wack-A-Mole game, featuring real moles.

Correct me if I am wrong, but by putting the controller that far away from the wrist, would that even work properlly? The controller would not move through the air the same way with this device as it would if you were holding it with your hands, and probably not in a way that would improve accuracy...
Phour ZwanZig @ Jul 17th 2007 10:18PM
huh... Umm I take it you dont own a wii..
It would work just fine, if not better..

Wiisaber possibilities?
Jess @ Jul 17th 2007 10:10PM
I held my breath when he swung. This is not a good idea. wiihaveaproblem.com is just dying to see the accidents waiting to happen.
AlanS17 @ Jul 18th 2007 8:45AM
That thing is wii-tarded (yeah I went here). Can you say "class-action"?
Colin @ Jul 18th 2007 8:58AM
This device will actually make your performance worse on games like Wii Baseball. By moving the Wiimote away from the axis of rotation, you increase the moment of inertia of the stuff you're swinging, which makes it more difficult to accelerate. Less acceleration means weaker swings in the game.
RVC @ Jul 18th 2007 8:20PM
Wrong! Because of the way it's held, the Wiimote's center of rotation is unusually close to the accelerometers which are the point where velocity is calculated. Try hitting a golf ball by holding the clubhead in your hand without a shaft or a baseball with a very short bat! The effect of the increased interia because your hand is 6" away from where it is when directly holding the 5 oz. Wiimote is negligible so, if anything, the acceleration will be greater resulting in better performance unless you've got very weak wrists!

What dumb crap are they going to come up with next. The Wii is looking more like a quick cash grabbing fad each and every day.
