Hello Kitty emergency gadget saves lives, looks real cute
If you live in a place like Japan, there are two things that probably pop into your head from time to time. One is earthquakes, because the little island has been home to some of the biggest over the years, and the other is Hello Kitty -- and she needs no introduction. Sanrio, in its infinite wisdom, has sought to join these two disparate elements by creating the Hello Kitty emergency gadget. In the event of some type of catastrophic event, Hello Kitty will be there with her hand crank USB cell phone charger, LED flashlight, AM/FM radio. hazard siren, and compass -- all in one super-cute pink package. Of course, once rescue workers find you, you still might die... of humiliation.

Interesting device, but far from purrfect.
What you really need is something that combines the appeal of a DS, with GPS locator and Nextel-type walkie-talkie features for emergencies (like abductions).

What do you need a crank cell phone charger for? If your phone is completely dead and you can't plug it into a regular outlet because the electrical company is for some reason not able to provide electricity... one would also think the cell towers that provide your signals will also be without electricity...LOL!
I guess you just start walking (and cranking) until you find an area with electricity (towers working)...in which then you could've just walked and plugged in your phone!
Plus it's really pretty freakin' ugly!

Chances are good that the cell phone towers still have power thanks to their Hello Kitty UPS systems.

Japan is in the process of fixing that issue.

Though, not available for a while. . .

Honestly, if a rescue worker DID find you with one of those (in Japan anyway) he or she would probably just start screaming "kawaiiiiiii!" (cuteeeeeee!) and want to adopt you for your cunning fashion sense.

"If you live in a place like Japan, there are two things that probably pop into your head from time to time."
Not two things, but three things: Attacks by giant monsters. You do know all those Godzilla flicks are documentaries, right?
Chip Me Now @ Jul 18th 2007 12:00PM
Hell NHAnimator, why don't you just go all the way and implant a chip if you are worred about abductions?

"What do you need a hand crank cell phone charger for?"
I can't believe I even have to point this out. If your car goes dead and you have to walk somewhere or wait for help and your phone is dead....ta-daa! Crank the cell phone charger up! The towers will still work for you.
Even if you are in an area without service while hiking, etc, you can walk to an in service area and not worry about not having a phone to use! We have a similar device to this and love it- we have used it on more than one occasion.

HK. She juices, cooks rice, makes toast, and now she saves your life.

Make it black with skulls and stuff all over it and I'm on it. No pink or Hello Kitty for this brutal metaller... \m/
