Apple's MacBookPro 85W MagSafe adapter finally shrunk
It only took 'em a year and a half to do it, but the ginormous monstrosity that is Apple MacBookPro 85W MagSafe power adapters have finally seem to have been reduced to a more manageable size. (Scale comparison above.) The same $80 that before got you the rather large 1st gen A1172 brick will now bring you home a 2nd gen MA938LL/A model that's sized closer in size to a MacBook 60W adapter, but still manages to crank out enough juice for your silver-clad Intel-based Mac laptop. The bad news: Apple store says 3-4 weeks for shipping.

Maybe you should be a little less abusive to your computer?
This is great news. Thanks Engadget for bringing this to our attention.
I'll just use the newer small adaptor for travel and leave the big old brick permanently plugged into my desk at the office.
Also, I'm very surprised by the low ($80) price. A few years ago when I bought an extra adaptor for my Titanium Powerbook G4, Apple charged me about $130
All fine and dandy except that that where the cable exits the brick to the computer is extremely fragile. My old iBook block finally burned out. I decided to plop down 50 bucks for one from MacSales rather than get a crummy Apple one.
So if I orderd a new C2D MBP 15" with LED backlighting and it juts became "prepared for shipment" today, will it come with this or the old one?
'...have finally seem to have been reduced...'
'...sized closer in size...'
It's ONE paragraph of text. Try to get your grammar right folks!
You need a comma after "right":
"Try to get your grammar right, folks!"
If you want to change the brick from the ned LED-MBP go ahead, I'd rather buy myself a second - no hassle between job and home. Anyway to busy to take my MBP on a holiday .oO.
for those complaining....option 2: return your Mac with the old "brick", go to Dell, buy a Dell laptop and get a REAL "brick", have you those adapters?
sheesh, winers these days.
I've actually left my MacBook Pro power brick underneath a comforter in my bed once, and if it gets too hot (I now know what that feels like), it will shut down and stop providing power to the laptop until it cools down, which I think is a "feature". :)
I've packed my MacBook Pro all over the world, fly with it, live with it, eat with it, sleep with it, make love to it...
It's pretty tough. I try not to beat the crap out of it but it does get abused. Still works great and I love the damn thing.
Wish I had the little adapter, but in the grand scope of things the bigger one is still pretty elegant.
Rule number one for laptops: Spend the extra $$ and get Applecare. Worth every cent.
I ordered a MBP online last week...and it hasn't shipped yet due to high demand (7-10 biz days). Am I going to get the old adapter or the new one?
I had ordered my MBP online on July 12 and got it about a week ago. It shipped with the old power adapter (the rectangular one). However, after seeing this post, I called them up and asked them for the new one. They agreed to ship it to me.
Thanks!
One thing worth noting is that the old adapter provided either 4.6A (MBP) or 3.6A (MacBook) - great if you want to have the flexibility to plug either in. The new one does not have auto switching and will only power the MBP.
