Intel cuts prices on quad-core chips
Intel is giving a lot of cheap speed-freaks cause for celebration today, as the company has just announced some deep price cuts to its line of quad-core CPUs (and a few other price snips here and there). The chipmaker has knocked down the price of the 2.93GHz Core 2 Quad QZ6800 with a 1066MHz FSB to $999, the 2.66 GHz Q6700 to $530, and the 2.4GHz Q6600 to $300 (shaving off almost half of its price). With these new drops, the Q6600 has become the cheapest quad-core chip on the market, thus making chumps of the people who bought it a month ago, but those who've been waiting for the cuts will be glad they did. Additionally, Intel has reduced the cost of some of its Core 2 Duo processors, taking around $20 off of the cost of the 2.2GHz E4500 and the 2GHz E4400. Be sure to check out InformationWeek's complex breakdown of the cuts, and where to find the best deals.

I wonder what will be AMD's next step...
whell might switch to a q6600 now but still not alot of multi threded programs so whats the point?
Running multiple single threaded apps at once ... I have about 154 threads running on my computer right now.
Most programs I use are multi-threaded. I really wish you people would quit spreading this myth.
Hell, even Quake 3 is multi-threaded.
Hope this has a nock on effect with Mac prices!?
mac dont have discounts. they always have a premium price over their hardware. hmm i bought my Q6600 last year. damn dropped to 25% of what i paid for.
dammit i wish that mac's would go back to the power pc processors
um... why?
Oh I was really glad I waited. Lagoom.com had the price cuts up for a while ago and Newegg just matched it over the weekend. I set up my Q6600 Saturday. And have been loving it. Glad I only paid $300 for Quad Cores, it's pretty fast, really stable, and could do a whole lot with out even flinching.
Only problem is that Newegg sold out over the weekend, so they jacked the price up. By yesterday they were out and the price was $320, now they restocked and it's up to $375. Not worth it if you ask me. Still have to cross the FSB to cross-over to each dual core. I'm waiting for the native Quad-Core, thanks.
"but still not alot of multi threded programs so whats the point?"
If you are running more than one program at a time (my guess is that you have about 16 things that start up with windows) or have any program that would actually take advantage of running on multiple threads then that is the point.
I'm sure the people over at are working hard to get you multi-thread support.
Awesome! By the time I'll get one of these later this year hopefully, the price will have dropped further.
If you're running a program that can take advantage of multi processors, such as Maya or After Effects, I'd think it's well worth the minor cost difference between the q6600 and e6600. Two extra cores for $70.
I doubt there will be any effect on Mac prices, as they don't use this line of processors.
What line of processors do Apple use? I was under the impression Apple used the quad cores.
Mac Pros use Xeon line processors. These will have a price drop on 29th as far as I know.
When will Core 4 Quad be out? or Core 4 Oct be out?
After the Core 3 series.
The "2" in Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, and Core 2 Extreme stands for "second line of Core processors" ... not "omg duo duel core 2 cores processz0rz"
I was sane enough to stay away from the dual core deals. Now I think its time to upgrade to a quad core. Will we see them anytime soon on a laptop?? I wonder.
Only price thats was knocked was the Q6600.
The Q6700 (2.6 GHz) and QX6850 (3 GHz) are new models.
The scissors are back (in black).
i hope this will affect the next gen laptop chip coz im waiting for a quad core laptop at a price like this...
Bought it months ago? How about a little over a week ago?
/me goes off to shoot himself.
how did you not hear about this... Intel announced the price drop and exact date like 2 months ago.
I missed it. And I lost ~$100 over it.
I'm not going to lose sleep over it either. My bad.
Cool, I just bought a motherboard 2 months ago that's quad capable, but it currently have my old 3.0 ghz installed. My evil plan is upgrade plan is working!!
I admit it, I bought a Q6600 about 3 weeks ago - for $500. However, I did get a sweet XFX SLI motherboard with it (~$150).
ummm, did Newegg just do the opposite? I always buy there but I'll wait this one out. I've read on AnandTech that Intel will be cutting prices of Q6600 to $266, Newegg showed out of stock yesterday for $299, now it's $345? Did the demand drive the price back up, is somebody playing games again?
Newegg is now at $375 - MSRP is supposed to be under $250 but lowest street price is about $300 right now. It's odd for Newegg to rip people off like this...
wow you're right, what's up with that? First time I see Newegg doing this kinda crap, it went up $30 in just an hour. I'm definitely waiting, within a week it should drop to about $270 I hope, if not on egg then somewhere else.
I think Newegg's prices are set automatically based on the amount of inventory they have.
Tigerdirect has an OEM Q6600 for $290. I checked for this price at 12:30 p.m. on July 24th.
