Joost to launch with million users by year's end
After several months of private beta-testing and some interesting rumors about hardware partners, it looks like Joost, the peer-to-peer IPTV service from the creators of Skype and Kazaa, will be ready to launch later this year. Co-founder Niklas Zennström told reporters at a press event in Romania that the online video service has signed up several content providers and "around 30 Tier One" advertisers, and that the million-user private beta is on track for general release "by the end of the year," although he didn't say exactly when. We've been hearing some interesting things about the Joost service model, it'll be interesting to see whether or not it takes hold with consumers the way the company thinks it will.[Via TV Squad]

If it's anything thing like their beta release I don't see Joost succeeding!
Yea. Ain't nothing but a bag o potato chipps!
They are not planing on making people pay for it , are they ? I mean i have the beta and i never think to use the thing , So if it cost anything other then free , you can count me out
FYI the Joost website FAQ dropped all mention of a Universal Mac client sometime in May 07, leaving the entire PowerPC demographic in the cold. No official response from the heated conversations in the Joost message boards (http://www.joost.com/forums/f/mac/)... the Intel Mac version is pretty sweet though!
While I actually enjoyed at least 2 channels on Joost, I am disappointed with the other 99% of their programming. Of course this still put it head and shoulders above any Comcast cable system.
I do wish they'd get some more episodes of Fifth Gear up, and I signed up originally because they have Ren & Stimpy.
Would I pay for their service? No. Will I bear commercials to be able to watch their programming for free? Yes. That's more than I can say for Comcast and their scam of getting money from advertisers and still charging their customers more and more each month.
Agreed.
I too only watch a couple of channels, but if they can get a few more bugs worked out I think they've got something good there.
Because this post I'm replying to isn't spam!
The video quality is fair at best on my laptop, and atrocious when blown up in my HDTV. Wake me up when they (or Apple for that matter) can do HD streaming.
The creators of Kazaa? Does this mean they've figured out how to put spyware on TVs?
And I'll bet they won't have a Linux version then either.
Don't leave us out!
I personally would purchase a hardware/set-top box version of this.
But as software... it tends to be a bit buggy.
The best thing about the beta was that every time I started it up, the Eric Prydz video for 'Call Me' came on with the smoking aerobics instructor. So far, that was about the only thing worth watching (agreed that I did watch it 50-60x)
I downloaded and tried it a couple months, hated the interface, then removed it from my PC, never to give it another thought. Does that make me one of the highly touted "million" users?
No linux support yet only like 32,000 views on their forums easily the most active topic, with no response from them. Oh yeah the best part some of their system is based on open source yet they won't provide any player for the open source community.
Well try this then http://www.freetube.us.tc , it's better content-wise, lots of live channels.
